Introduction
A NOTE ON THIS RENDERING
THE WITNESS
This is the First Book of Kings as the Greek keeps it, and the Greek keeps it differently. In the Hebrew Bible the book is Melachim Alef; in the Septuagint it is the Third of the Kingdoms — for the Greek counts Shemu'el and Melachim together as four Books of the Kingdoms, and this is the third of them. But the difference runs deeper than the name. The Greek of Kings rests in many places on a Hebrew text older than the one the Masoretes would later fix, and it tells its story with its own order, its own additions, and its own silences. The House renders that Greek witness as it stands — Brenton's public- domain Septuagint — and does not quietly conform it to the familiar Hebrew. Where the two traditions part, the note says so, and the page follows the Greek. The witness-line reads Rendered from the Septuagint.
THE MISCELLANIES OF THE SECOND CHAPTER
After the death-charge of David and the settling of Shelomoh upon his throne, the Greek does a thing the Hebrew never does: it gathers two supplements of collected sayings and deeds — scholars call them the Miscellanies — and sets them into the second chapter, at verses 35a–35o and 46a–46l. They rehearse Shelomoh's wisdom and building, his marriage to Par'oh's daughter, his officers and his provisions, ahead of their proper telling and out of order. The House prints them in their Greek place and keeps their lettered numbering exactly, every letter and every gap.
THE OTHER YAROV'AM
The Greek carries a second and wholly different account of Yarov'am's rise — a long supplement at 12:24a–24z — telling of his mother, his flight into Mitzrayim, his return, the sickness of his child, and the torn garment of the navi, in an order and with details the Hebrew does not share. Because this material already stands here, the Greek has no need of the Hebrew's fourteenth chapter; and so, in this book, chapter fourteen opens not with Yarov'am at all but at verse twenty- one, with Rechav'am in Yehudah. The House keeps both the supplement and the silence, and does not import the missing Hebrew verses to mend the seam.
THE VINEYARD AND THE WARS
In the Hebrew, Ach'av fights his wars against the son of Hadad in the twentieth chapter and murders Navot for his vineyard in the twenty-first. The Greek reverses them: here the twentieth chapter is Navot's vineyard, and the twenty- first is the wars of the son of Hadad. The House follows the Greek order, and the reader who knows the Hebrew should not be surprised to meet the vineyard first.
THE MISSING AND THE MOVED
Throughout the book the Greek keeps its own reckoning of the verses. Passages the Hebrew holds in one place the Greek sets in another or leaves out altogether: the account of Shelomoh's forced levy and his building works is largely gone from the ninth chapter, whose verses fifteen to twenty-five are simply not there; the third chapter opens at its second verse; the fifth, sixth, eighth, tenth and sixteenth chapters each carry supplements and gaps of their own. Every gap and every lettered addition is printed as the witness gives it. No verse is renumbered to smooth the counting, by the rule that governs every broken numbering on this shelf.
THE NAME, AND THE LORD WHO IS NOT DIVINE
YAHUAH stands wherever the Greek says Kyrios, and is never glossed. The human lord — my lord the king, the servant before his master — is left in lower case, exactly as the Greek keeps it distinct from the Name. Elohim stands for Theos. Kyrios Pantokrator, the Lord Almighty, becomes YAHUAH Shaddai (19:10, 14); the Lord of hosts, YAHUAH Tzeva'ot. And where the oath rings out through this book of oaths — As YAHUAH lives — it is the Name that carries it.
THE LAND THE GREEK CALLS SYRIA
Where the Hebrew says Aram, the Greek says Syria and Syrians — the name the Greek-speaking world knew. The House restores the older name: the kingdom of Dammesek and the son of Hadad are kings of Aram, and this note records that the Greek had dressed them otherwise. It is the same restoration by which the Greek's Egypt is set back to Mitzrayim.
THE NAMES RESTORED
This is a book of names — kings and prophets, priests and places by the hundred — and the House restores them to their House forms as it does across the whole shelf: Shelomoh and David, Rechav'am and Yarov'am, Eliyahu the Tishbi and Elisha, Ach'av and Izevel, Yehoshafat and Asa and Omri; Yerushalayim and Shomron, Mitzrayim and Levanon, the Yarden, Karmel, and Chorev. Each is set in Hebrew and glossed once at its first appearance.
THE GREEK'S OWN NAMES
But the Greek also carries names the Hebrew does not, and names the Greek itself has worn out of shape — above all in the Miscellanies and the Yarov'am supplement, where the copyists have left us forms like Ano and Genubath, Achithalam and Enlami, together with a scatter of Shelomoh's district-officers whose names survive only in their Greek dress. The House does not invent a Hebrew that never stood behind these; it leaves them as the witness gives them, and restores a name only where a true Hebrew form is known. To do otherwise would be to bend the text toward a conclusion, which the rule forbids.
THE HOUSE, AND THE VESSELS OF WORSHIP
Around the building and dedication of the house in chapters five through eight, the House restores the holy things in their own tongue: the aron, the ark of the brit; the mizbeach, the altar; the kohanim who serve and the neviim who speak. But the house itself is kept a house, not forced into a title the Greek does not raise; and the sacrifices and offerings are left in plain English, that the narrative may carry its own weight without a gloss on every line.
THE TONGUE
The vocabulary as applied in this book, each term glossed at its first appearance and bare thereafter: YAHUAH — never glossed — with Elohim, Shaddai, and Tzeva'ot; brit (covenant) and aron (the ark); Torah (law), mitzvot (commandments), chukim (statutes), mishpatim (ordinances); kohen and kohanim, navi and neviim; mizbeach (altar), Mishkan (tabernacle), Ruach (spirit); Aram for the Greek's Syria; and the long roll of restored names — kings, prophets, and places — each in its House form. The Greek's own peculiar names, and the two Miscellanies, are kept as the witness gives them.
RULE X.4
The text is rendered as it stands. The translation is never adjusted to fit a conclusion. Interpretation belongs to the introductions and the notes — never to the verse.
1 Melakhim (1 Kings)—Chapter 1
1.0×
1And King David was old and advanced in days, and they covered him with clothes, and he was not warmed.2And his servants said, Let them seek for the king a young virgin, and she shall wait on the king, and cherish him, and lie with him, and my lord the king shall be warmed.3So they sought for a fair damsel out of all the coasts of Yisra'el (Israel); and they found Avishag (Abishag) the Shunammite, and they brought her to the king.4And the damsel was extremely beautiful, and she cherished the king, and ministered to him, but the king knew her not.5And Adoniyahu (Adonijah) the son of Chaggit (Haggith) exalted himself, saying, I will be king; and he prepared for himself chariots and horses, and fifty men to run before him.6And his father never at any time checked him, saying, Why hast thou done thus? and he was also very handsome in appearance, and his mother bore him after Avshalom (Absalom).7And he conferred with Yo'av (Joab) the son of Tzeruyah (Zeruiah), and with Evyatar (Abiathar) the kohen (priest), and they followed after Adoniyahu.8But Tzadok (Zadok) the kohen, and Benayahu (Benaiah) the son of Yehoyada (Jehoiada), and Natan (Nathan) the navi (prophet), and Shim'i (Shimei), and Rei, and the mighty men of David, did not follow Adoniyahu.9And Adoniyahu sacrificed sheep and calves and lambs by the stone of Zoelethi, which was near Rogel: and he called all his brethren, and all the adult men of Yehudah (Judah), servants of the king.10But Natan the navi, and Benayahu, and the mighty men, and Shelomoh (Solomon) his brother, he did not call.11And Natan spoke to Bat-Sheva (Bathsheba) the mother of Shelomoh, saying, Hast thou not heard that Adoniyahu the son of Chaggit reigns, and our lord David knows it not?12And now come, let me, I pray, give thee counsel, and thou shalt rescue thy life, and the life of thy son Shelomoh.13Haste, and go in to King David, and thou shalt speak to him, saying, Hast not thou, my lord, O king, sworn to thy handmaid, saying, Thy son Shelomoh shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne? why then does Adoniyahu reign?14And behold, while thou art still speaking there with the king, I also will come in after thee, and will confirm thy words.15So Bat-Sheva went in to the king into the chamber: and the king was very old, and Avishag the Shunammite was ministering to the king.16And Bat-Sheva bowed, and did obeisance to the king; and the king said, What is thy request?17And she said, My lord, thou didst swear by YAHUAH thy Elohim (God) to thy handmaid, saying, Thy son Shelomoh shall reign after me, and shall sit upon my throne.18And now, behold, Adoniyahu reigns, and thou, my lord, O king, knowest it not.19And he has sacrificed calves and lambs and sheep in abundance, and has called all the king’s sons, and Evyatar the kohen and Yo'av the commander-in-chief of the host; but Shelomoh thy servant he has not called.20And thou, my lord, O king—the eyes of all Yisra'el are upon thee, to tell them who shall sit upon the throne of my lord the king after him.21And it shall come to pass, when my lord the king shall sleep with his fathers, that I and Shelomoh my son shall be offenders.22And behold, while she was yet talking with the king, Natan the navi came. And it was reported to the king,23Behold, Natan the navi is here: and he came in to the king’s presence, and did obeisance to the king with his face to the ground.24And Natan said, My lord, O king, didst thou say, Adoniyahu shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne?25For he has gone down today, and has sacrificed calves and lambs and sheep in abundance, and has called all the king’s sons, and the chiefs of the army, and Evyatar the kohen; and, behold, they are eating and drinking before him, and they said, Long live King Adoniyahu.26But he has not invited me thy servant, and Tzadok the kohen, and Benayahu the son of Yehoyada, and Shelomoh thy servant.27Has this matter happened by the authority of my lord the king, and hast thou not made known to thy servant who shall sit upon the throne of my lord the king after him?28And King David answered and said, Call me Bat-Sheva: and she came in before the king, and stood before him.29And the king swore, and said, As YAHUAH lives who redeemed my soul out of all affliction,30as I swore to thee by YAHUAH Elohim of Yisra'el, saying, Shelomoh thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne in my stead, so will I do this day.31And Bat-Sheva bowed with her face to the ground, and did obeisance to the king, and said, Let my lord King David live forever.32And King David said, Call me Tzadok the kohen, and Natan the navi, and Benayahu the son of Yehoyada: and they came in before the king.33And the king said to them, Take the servants of your lord with you, and mount my son Shelomoh upon my own mule, and bring him down to Gichon (Gihon).34And there let Tzadok the kohen and Natan the navi anoint him to be king over Yisra'el, and do ye sound the trumpet, and ye shall say, Let King Shelomoh live.35And he shall sit upon my throne, and reign in my stead: and I have given charge that he should be for a prince over Yisra'el and Yehudah.36And Benayahu the son of Yehoyada answered the king and said, So let it be: may YAHUAH Elohim of my lord the king confirm it.37As YAHUAH was with my lord the king, so let him be with Shelomoh, and let him exalt his throne beyond the throne of my lord King David.38And Tzadok the kohen went down, and Natan the navi, and Benayahu son of Yehoyada, and the Cherethite, and the Pelethite, and they mounted Shelomoh upon the mule of King David, and led him away to Gichon.39And Tzadok the kohen took the horn of oil out of the Mishkan (tabernacle), and anointed Shelomoh, and blew the trumpet; and all the people said, Let King Shelomoh live.40And all the people went up after him, and they danced in choirs, and rejoiced with great joy, and the earth quaked with their voice.41And Adoniyahu and all his guests heard, and they had just left off eating: and Yo'av heard the sound of the trumpet, and said, What means the voice of the city in tumult?42While he was yet speaking, behold, Yonatan (Jonathan) the son of Evyatar the kohen came in: and Adoniyahu said, Come in, for thou art a mighty man, and thou comest to bring glad tidings.43And Yonatan answered and said, Verily our lord King David has made Shelomoh king:44and the king has sent with him Tzadok the kohen, and Natan the navi, and Benayahu the son of Yehoyada, and the Cherethite, and the Pelethite, and they have mounted him on the king’s mule;45and Tzadok the kohen and Natan the navi have anointed him in Gichon, and have gone up thence rejoicing, and the city resounded: this is the sound which ye have heard.46And Shelomoh is seated upon the throne of the kingdom.47And the servants of the king have gone in to bless our lord King David, saying, Elohim make the name of Shelomoh better than thy name, and make his throne greater than thy throne; and the king worshiped upon his bed.48Moreover thus said the king, Blessed be YAHUAH Elohim of Yisra'el, who has this day appointed one of my seed sitting on my throne, and my eyes see it.49And all the guests of Adoniyahu were dismayed, and every man went his way.50And Adoniyahu feared because of Shelomoh, and arose, and departed, and laid hold on the horns of the mizbeach (altar).51And it was reported to Shelomoh, saying, Behold, Adoniyahu fears King Shelomoh, and holds the horns of the mizbeach, saying, Let Shelomoh swear to me this day, that he will not slay his servant with the sword.52And Shelomoh said, If he should be a valiant man, there shall not a hair of his fall to the ground; but if evil be found in him, he shall die.53And King Shelomoh sent, and they brought him away from the mizbeach; and he went in and did obeisance to King Shelomoh: and Shelomoh said to him, Go to thy house.
1 Melakhim (1 Kings)—Chapter 2
1.0×
1And the days of David drew near that he should die: and he addressed his son Shelomoh, saying, I go the way of all the earth:2but be thou strong, and show thyself a man;3and keep the charge of YAHUAH thy Elohim, to walk in his ways, to keep the mitzvot (commandments) and the mishpatim (ordinances) and the judgments which are written in the Torah (law) of Moshe (Moses); that thou mayest understand what thou shalt do in all things that I command thee:4that YAHUAH may confirm his word which he spoke, saying, If thy children shall take heed to their way to walk before me in truth with all their heart, I promise thee, saying, there shall not fail thee a man on the throne of Yisra'el.5Moreover thou knowest all that Yo'av the son of Tzeruyah did to me, what he did to the two captains of the forces of Yisra'el, to Avner (Abner) the son of Ner, and to Amasa the son of Yeter (Jether), that he slew them, and shed the blood of war in peace, and put innocent blood on his girdle that was about his loins, and on his sandal that was on his foot.6Therefore thou shalt deal with him according to thy wisdom, and thou shalt not bring down his gray hairs in peace to the grave.7But thou shalt deal kindly with the sons of Barzillai the Gil'adi (Gileadite), and they shall be among those that eat at thy table; for thus they drew nigh to me when I fled from the face of thy brother Avshalom.8And, behold, there is with thee Shim'i the son of Gera, a Benjaminite of Bachurim (Bahurim): and he cursed me with a grievous curse in the day when I went into the camp; and he came down to Yarden (Jordan) to meet me, and I swore to him by YAHUAH, saying, I will not put thee to death with the sword.9But thou shalt by no means hold him guiltless, for thou art a wise man, and wilt know what thou shalt do to him, and shalt bring down his gray hairs with blood to the grave.10And David slept with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David.11And the days which David reigned over Yisra'el were forty years; he reigned seven years in Chevron (Hebron), and thirty-three years in Yerushalayim (Jerusalem).12And Shelomoh sat on the throne of his father David, and his kingdom was established greatly.13And Adoniyahu the son of Chaggit came in to Bat-Sheva the mother of Shelomoh, and did obeisance to her: and she said, Dost thou enter peaceably? and he said, Peaceably:14I have business with thee. And she said to him, Say on.15And he said to her, Thou knowest that the kingdom was mine, and all Yisra'el turned their face toward me for a king; but the kingdom was turned from me and became my brother’s: for it was appointed to him from YAHUAH.16And now I make one request of thee, do not turn away thy face. And Bat-Sheva said to him, Speak on.17And he said to her, Speak, I pray thee, to King Shelomoh, for he will not turn away his face from thee, and let him give me Avishag the Shunammite for a wife.18And Bat-Sheva said, Well; I will speak for thee to the king.19And Bat-Sheva went in to King Shelomoh to speak to him concerning Adoniyahu; and the king rose up to meet her, and kissed her, and sat on the throne, and a throne was set for the mother of the king, and she sat on his right hand.20And she said to him, I ask of thee one little request; turn not away my face from thee. And the king said to her, Ask, my mother, and I will not reject thee.21And she said, Let, I pray thee, Avishag the Shunammite be given to Adoniyahu thy brother to wife.22And King Shelomoh answered and said to his mother, And why hast thou asked Avishag for Adoniyahu? ask for him the kingdom also; for he is my elder brother, and he has for his companion Evyatar the kohen, and Yo'av the son of Tzeruyah the commander-in-chief.23And King Shelomoh swore by YAHUAH, saying, Elohim do so to me, and more also, if it be not that Adoniyahu has spoken this word against his own life.24And now as YAHUAH lives who has established me, and set me on the throne of my father David, and he has made me a house, as YAHUAH spoke, this day shall Adoniyahu be put to death.25So King Shelomoh sent by the hand of Benayahu the son of Yehoyada, and he slew him, and Adoniyahu died in that day.26And the king said to Evyatar the kohen, Depart thou quickly to Anatot (Anathoth) to thy farm, for thou art worthy of death this day; but I will not slay thee, because thou hast borne the aron (the ark) of the brit (covenant) of YAHUAH before my father, and because thou wast afflicted in all things wherein my father was afflicted.27And Shelomoh removed Evyatar from being a kohen of YAHUAH, that the word of YAHUAH might be fulfilled, which he spoke concerning the house of Eli in Shilo (Shiloh).28And the report came to Yo'av son of Tzeruyah; for Yo'av had turned after Adoniyahu, and he went not after Shelomoh: and Yo'av fled to the Mishkan of YAHUAH, and caught hold of the horns of the mizbeach.29And it was told Shelomoh, saying, Yo'av has fled to the Mishkan of YAHUAH, and lo! he has hold of the horns of the mizbeach. And King Shelomoh sent to Yo'av, saying, What ails thee, that thou hast fled to the mizbeach? and Yo'av said, Because I was afraid of thee, and fled for refuge to YAHUAH. And Shelomoh sent Benayahu son of Yehoyada, saying, Go and slay him, and bury him.30And Benayahu son of Yehoyada came to Yo'av to the Mishkan of YAHUAH, and said to him, Thus says the king, Come forth. And Yo'av said, I will not come forth, for I will die here. And Benayahu son of Yehoyada returned and spoke to the king, saying, Thus has Yo'av spoken, and thus has he answered me.31And the king said to him, Go, and do to him as he has spoken, and kill him: and thou shalt bury him, and thou shalt remove this day the blood which he shed without cause, from me and from the house of my father.32And YAHUAH has returned upon his own head the blood of his unrighteousness, inasmuch as he attacked two men more righteous and better than himself, and slew them with the sword, and my father David knew not of their blood, even Avner the son of Ner the commander-in-chief of Yisra'el, and Amasa the son of Yeter the commander-in-chief of Yehudah.33And their blood is returned upon his head, and upon the head of his seed forever: but to David, and his seed, and his house, and his throne, may there be peace forever from YAHUAH.34So Benayahu son of Yehoyada went up, and attacked him, and slew him, and buried him in his house in the wilderness.35And the king appointed Benayahu son of Yehoyada in his place over the host; and the kingdom was established in Yerushalayim; and as for Tzadok the kohen, the king appointed him to be high kohen in the room of Evyatar. And Shelomoh son of David reigned over Yisra'el and Yehudah in Yerushalayim: and YAHUAH gave understanding to Shelomoh, and very much wisdom, and largeness of heart, as the sand by the seashore. And the wisdom of Shelomoh abounded exceedingly beyond the wisdom of all the ancients, and beyond all the wise men of Mitzrayim (Egypt); and he took the daughter of Par'oh (Pharaoh), and brought her into the city of David, until he had finished building his own house, and the house of YAHUAH first, and the wall of Yerushalayim round about. In seven years he made and finished them. And Shelomoh had seventy thousand bearers of burdens, and eighty thousand hewers of stone in the mountain: and Shelomoh made the sea, and the bases, and the great lavers, and the pillars, and the fountain of the court, and the brazen sea—and he built the citadel as a defense above it, he made a breach in the wall of the city of David; thus the daughter of Par'oh went up out of the city of David to her house which he built for her. Then he built the citadel; and Shelomoh offered up three whole burnt offerings in the year, and peace offerings on the mizbeach which he built to YAHUAH, and he burned incense before YAHUAH, and finished the house. And these are the chief persons who presided over the works of Shelomoh; three thousand and six hundred masters of the people that wrought the works. And he built Chatzor (Hazor), and Megiddo, and Gezer, and upper Beit-Choron (Beth-horon), and Ba'alat (Baalath): only after he had built the house of YAHUAH, and the wall of Yerushalayim round about, afterward he built these cities. And when David was yet living, he charged Shelomoh, saying, Behold, there is with thee Shim'i the son of Gera, of the seed of Binyamin (Benjamin) out of Chevron: he cursed me with a grievous curse in the day when I went into the camp; and he came down to meet me at Yarden, and I swore to him by YAHUAH, saying, He shall not be slain with the sword. But now do not thou hold him guiltless, for thou art a man of understanding, and thou wilt know what thou shalt do to him, and thou shalt bring down his gray hairs with blood to the grave.36And the king called Shim'i, and said to him, Build thee a house in Yerushalayim, and dwell there, and thou shalt not go out thence any whither.37And it shall come to pass in the day that thou shalt go forth and cross over the brook Kidron, know assuredly that thou shalt certainly die: thy blood shall be upon thy head. And the king caused him to swear in that day.38And Shim'i said to the king, Good is the word that thou hast spoken, my lord O king: thus will thy servant do. And Shim'i dwelt in Yerushalayim three years.39And it came to pass after the three years, that two servants of Shim'i ran away to Achish son of Ma'achah (Maacah) king of Gat (Gath): and it was told Shim'i, saying, Behold, thy servants are in Gat.40And Shim'i rose up, and saddled his ass, and went to Gat to Achish to seek out his servants: and Shim'i went, and brought his servants out of Gat.41And it was told Shelomoh, saying, Shim'i is gone out of Yerushalayim to Gat, and has brought back his servants.42And the king sent and called Shim'i, and said to him, Did I not adjure thee by YAHUAH, and testify to thee, saying, In whatsoever day thou shalt go out of Yerushalayim, and go to the right or left, know certainly that thou shalt assuredly die?43And why hast thou not kept the oath of YAHUAH, and the mitzvah which I commanded thee?44And the king said to Shim'i, Thou knowest all thy mischief which thy heart knows, which thou didst to David my father: and YAHUAH has recompensed thy mischief on thine own head.45And King Shelomoh is blessed, and the throne of David shall be established before YAHUAH forever.46And Shelomoh commanded Benayahu the son of Yehoyada, and he went forth and slew him. And King Shelomoh was very prudent and wise: and Yehudah and Yisra'el were very many, as the sand which is by the sea for multitude, eating, and drinking, and rejoicing: and Shelomoh was chief in all the kingdoms, and they brought gifts, and served Shelomoh all the days of his life. And Shelomoh began to open the domains of Levanon (Lebanon), and he built Thermae in the wilderness. And this was the daily provision of Shelomoh, thirty measures of fine flour, and sixty measures of ground meal, ten choice calves, and twenty oxen from the pastures, and a hundred sheep, besides stags, and does, and choice fed birds. For he ruled in all the country on this side the river, from Raphi unto Azzah (Gaza), over all the kings on this side the river: and he was at peace on all sides round about; and Yehudah and Yisra'el dwelt safely, every one under his vine and under his fig tree, eating and drinking, and feasting, from Dan even to Be'er-Sheva (Beersheba), all the days of Shelomoh. And these were the princes of Shelomoh; Azaryahu (Azariah) son of Tzadok the kohen, and Orniu son of Natan chief of the officers, and he went to his house; and Subas the scribe, and Ba'sha (Basa) son of Achithalam recorder, and Abi son of Yo'av commander-in-chief, and Achire son of Edrai was over the levies, and Benayahu son of Yehoyada over the household and over the brickwork, and Cachur the son of Natan was counselor. And Shelomoh had forty thousand brood mares for his chariots, and twelve thousand horses. And he reigned over all the kings from the river and to the land of the Pelishtim (Philistines), and to the borders of Mitzrayim: so Shelomoh the son of David reigned over Yisra'el and Yehudah in Yerushalayim.

2Nevertheless the people burned incense on the high places, because a house had not yet been built to YAHUAH.3And Shelomoh loved YAHUAH, so as to walk in the mishpatim of David his father; only he sacrificed and burned incense on the high places.4And he arose and went to Giv'on (Gibeon) to sacrifice there, for that was the highest place, and great: Shelomoh offered a whole burnt offering of a thousand victims on the mizbeach in Giv'on.5And YAHUAH appeared to Shelomoh in a dream by night, and YAHUAH said to Shelomoh, Ask some petition for thyself.6And Shelomoh said, Thou hast dealt very mercifully with thy servant David my father according as he walked before thee in truth, and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with thee, and thou hast kept for him this great mercy, to set his son upon his throne, as it is this day.7And now, O YAHUAH my Elohim, thou hast appointed thy servant in the room of David my father; and I am a little child, and know not my going out and my coming in.8But thy servant is in the midst of thy people, whom thou hast chosen, a great people, which cannot be numbered.9Thou shalt give therefore to thy servant a heart to hear and to judge thy people justly, and to discern between good and evil: for who will be able to judge this thy great people?10And it was pleasing before YAHUAH, that Shelomoh asked this thing.11And YAHUAH said to him, Because thou hast asked this thing of me, and hast not asked for thyself long life, and hast not asked wealth, nor hast asked the lives of thine enemies, but hast asked for thyself understanding to hear judgment;12behold, I have done according to thy word: behold, I have given thee an understanding and wise heart: there has not been anyone like thee before thee, and after thee there shall not arise one like thee.13And I have given thee what thou hast not asked, wealth and glory, so that there has not been anyone like thee among kings.14And if thou wilt walk in my way, to keep my mitzvot and my mishpatim, as David thy father walked, then will I multiply thy days.15And Shelomoh awoke, and, behold, it was a dream: and he arose and came to Yerushalayim, and stood before the mizbeach that was in front of the aron of the brit of YAHUAH in Tziyon (Zion): and he offered whole burnt offerings, and sacrificed peace offerings, and made a great banquet for himself and all his servants.16Then there appeared two harlots before the king, and they stood before him.17And the one woman said, Hear me, my lord; I and this woman dwelt in one house, and we were delivered in the house.18And it came to pass on the third day after I was delivered, this woman also was delivered: and we were together; and there was no one with us besides our two selves in the house.19And this woman’s child died in the night; because she overlaid it.20And she arose in the middle of the night, and took my son from my arms, and laid him in her bosom, and laid her dead son in my bosom.21And I arose in the morning to suckle my son, and he was dead: and, behold, I considered him in the morning, and, behold, it was not my son whom I bore.22And the other woman said, No, but the living is my son, and the dead is thy son. So they spoke before the king.23And the king said to them, Thou sayest, This is my son, even the living one, and this woman’s son is the dead one: and thou sayest, No, but the living is my son, and the dead is thy son.24And the king said, Fetch a sword. And they brought a sword before the king.25And the king said, Divide the live child, the suckling, in two; and give half of it to one, and half of it to the other.26And the woman whose the living child was, answered and spoke to the king (for her bowels yearned over her son), and she said, I pray thee, my lord, give her the child, and in nowise slay it. But the other said, Let it be neither mine nor hers; divide it.27Then the king answered and said, Give the child to her that said, Give it to her, and by no means slay it: she is its mother.28And all Yisra'el heard this judgment which the king judged, and they feared before the king; because they saw that the wisdom of Elohim was in him, to execute judgment.

1And King Shelomoh reigned over Yisra'el.2And these are the princes which he had; Azaryahu son of Tzadok.3Elihoreph, and Achiyah (Ahijah) son of Shisha, scribes; and Yehoshafat (Jehoshaphat) son of Achilud (Ahilud), recorder.4And Benayahu son of Yehoyada over the host; and Tzadok and Evyatar were kohanim.5And Ornia the son of Natan was over the officers; and Zabud son of Natan was the king’s friend.6And Achishar (Ahishar) was steward, and Eliac the chief steward; and Eliab the son of Saph was over the family: and Adoniram the son of Abda over the tribute.7And Shelomoh had twelve officers over all Yisra'el, to provide for the king and his household; each one’s turn came to supply for a month in the year.8And these were their names: Ben the son of Hur in the mount of Efrayim (Ephraim), one.9The son of Deker, in Makaz, and in Shaalbim, and Beit-Shemesh (Beth-shemesh), and Elon as far as Beit-Chanan (Beth-hanan), one.10The son of Hesed in Arubboth; his was Socoh, and all the land of Hepher.11All Nafat-Dor (Naphath-dor) belonged to the son of Abinadab, Taphath daughter of Shelomoh was his wife, one.12Baana son of Achilud had Taanach, and Megiddo, and his was the whole house of Shean which was by Tzartan (Zarethan) below Yizre'el (Jezreel), and from Beit-She'an (Beth-shean) as far as Avel-Mecholah (Abel-meholah), as far as Maeber Lucam, one.13The son of Geber in Ramot-Gil'ad (Ramoth-gilead), to him fell the lot of Argob in Bashan, sixty great cities with walls, and brazen bars, one.14Ahinadab son of Iddo, had Machanayim (Mahanaim).15Ahimaaz was in Naftali (Naphtali), and he took Basemath daughter of Shelomoh to wife, one.16Baana son of Chushai (Hushai), in Asher and in Bealoth, one,17Shim'i son of Elah (Ela), in Binyamin.18Geber son of Uri in the land of Gil'ad (Gilead), the land of Sichon (Sihon) king of Cheshbon (Heshbon), and of Og king of Bashan, and one officer in the land of Yehudah.19Yehoshafat son of Paruah was in Yissachar (Issachar).

1And thus the officers provided King Shelomoh: and they execute every one in his month all the orders for the table of the king, they omit nothing. And they carried the barley and the straw for the horses and the chariots to the place where the king might be, each according to his charge.2And these were the requisite supplies for Shelomoh: in one day thirty measures of fine flour, and sixty measures of fine pounded meal,3and ten choice calves, and twenty pastured oxen, and a hundred sheep, besides stags, and choice fatted does.4For he had dominion on this side the river, and he was at peace on all sides round about.9And YAHUAH gave understanding to Shelomoh, and very much wisdom, and enlargement of heart, as the sand on the seashore.10And Shelomoh abounded greatly beyond the wisdom of all the ancients, and beyond all the wise men of Mitzrayim.11And he was wiser than all other men: and he was wiser than Etan (Ethan) the Ezrahite, and than Heman, and than Kalkol (Calcol) and Darda the sons of Machol (Mahol).12And Shelomoh spoke three thousand proverbs, and his songs were five thousand.13And he spoke of trees, from the cedar in Levanon even to the hyssop which comes out through the wall: he spoke also of cattle, and of birds, and of reptiles, and of fish.14And all the nations came to hear the wisdom of Shelomoh, and ambassadors from all the kings of the earth, as many as heard of his wisdom. And Shelomoh took to himself the daughter of Par'oh to wife, and brought her into the city of David until he had finished the house of YAHUAH, and his own house, and the wall of Yerushalayim. Then went up Par'oh the king of Mitzrayim, and took Gezer, and burned it and the Kena'ani (Canaanite) dwelling in Mergab; and Par'oh gave them as a dowry to his daughter the wife of Shelomoh: and Shelomoh rebuilt Gezer.15And Chiram (Hiram) king of Tzor (Tyre) sent his servants to anoint Shelomoh in the room of David his father, because Chiram always loved David.16And Shelomoh sent to Chiram, saying,17Thou knewest my father David, that he could not build a house to the name of YAHUAH my Elohim because of the wars that compassed him about, until YAHUAH put them under the soles of his feet.18And now YAHUAH my Elohim has given me rest round about; there is no one plotting against me, and there is no evil trespass against me.19And, behold, I intend to build a house to the name of YAHUAH my Elohim, as YAHUAH Elohim spoke to my father David, saying, Thy son whom I will set on thy throne in thy place, he shall build a house to my name.20And now command, and let men cut wood for me out of Levanon: and, behold, my servants shall be with thy servants, and I will give thee the wages of thy service, according to all that thou shalt say, because thou knowest that we have no one skilled in cutting timber like the Tzidonim (Sidonians).21And it came to pass, as soon as Chiram heard the words of Shelomoh, that he rejoiced greatly, and said, Blessed be Elohim today, who has given to David a wise son over this numerous people.22And he sent to Shelomoh, saying, I have listened concerning all that thou hast sent to me for: I will do all thy will: as for timber of cedar and fir,23my servants shall bring them down from Levanon to the sea: I will form them into rafts, and bring them to the place which thou shalt send to me about; and I will land them there, and thou shalt take them up: and thou shalt do my will, in giving bread to my household.24So Chiram gave to Shelomoh cedars, and fir trees, and all his desire.25And Shelomoh gave to Chiram twenty thousand measures of wheat as food for his house, and twenty thousand baths of beaten oil thus Shelomoh gave to Chiram yearly.26And YAHUAH gave wisdom to Shelomoh as he promised him; and there was peace between Chiram and Shelomoh, and they made a brit between them.27And the king raised a levy out of all Yisra'el, and the levy was thirty thousand men.28And he sent them to Levanon, ten thousand taking turn every month: they were a month in Levanon and two months at home: and Adoniram was over the levy.29And Shelomoh had seventy thousand bearers of burdens, and eighty thousand hewers of stone in the mountain;30besides the rulers that were appointed over the works of Shelomoh, there were three thousand six hundred masters who wrought in the works.32And they prepared the stones and the timber during three years.

1And it came to pass in the four hundred and fortieth year after the departure of the children of Yisra'el out of Mitzrayim, in the fourth year and second month of the reign of King Shelomoh over Yisra'el, that the king commanded that they should take great and costly stones for the foundation of the house, and hewn stones. And the men of Shelomoh, and the men of Chiram hewed the stones, and laid them for a foundation. In the fourth year he laid the foundation of the house of YAHUAH, in the month Ziv, even in the second month. In the eleventh year, in the month Bul, this is the eighth month, the house was completed according to all its plan, and according to all its arrangement.2And the house which the king built to YAHUAH was forty cubits in length, and twenty cubits in breadth, and its height five and twenty cubits.3And the porch in front of the temple—twenty cubits was its length according to the breadth of the house in front of the house: and he built the house, and finished it.4And he made to the house secret windows inclining inward.5And against the wall of the house he set chambers round about the temple and the aron.6The under side was five cubits broad, and the middle part six, and the third was seven cubits broad; for he formed an interval to the house round about without the house, that they might not touch the walls of the house.7And the house was built in the construction of it with rough hewn stones: and there was not heard in the house in the building of it hammer or axe, or any iron tool.8And the porch of the under side was below the right wing of the house, and there was a winding ascent into the middle chamber, and from the middle to the third story.9So he built the house and finished it; and he made the ceiling of the house with cedars.10And he made the partitions through all the house, each five cubits high, and enclosed each partition with cedar boards.15And he framed the walls of the house within with cedar boards, from the floor of the house and on to the inner walls and to the beams: he lined the parts enclosed with boards within, and compassed the inward parts of the house with planks of fir.16And he built the twenty cubits from the top of the wall, one side from the floor to the beams, and he made it from the oracle to the most holy place.17And the temple was forty cubits in extent,19in front of the oracle in the midst of the house within, in order to put there the aron of the brit of YAHUAH.20The length was twenty cubits, and the breadth was twenty cubits, and the height of it was twenty cubits. And he covered it with perfect gold, and he made an mizbeach21in front of the oracle, and covered it with gold.22And he covered the whole house with gold, till he had finished gilding the whole house.23And he made in the oracle two cherubs of ten cubits measured size.24And the wing of one cherub was five cubits, and his other wing was five cubits; ten cubits from the tip of one wing to the tip of the other wing.25Thus it was with the other cherub, both were alike finished with one measure.26And the height of the one cherub was ten cubits, and so was it with the second cherub.27And both the cherubs were in the midst of the innermost part of the house; and they spread out their wings, and one wing touched the wall, and the wing of the other cherub touched the other wall; and their wings in the midst of the house touched each other.28And he covered the cherubs with gold.29He graved all the walls of the house round about with the graving of cherubs, and he sculptured palm trees within and without the house.30And he covered the floor of the house within and without with gold.31And for the doorway of the oracle he made doors of juniper wood, there were porches in a fourfold way.34In both the doors were planks of fir; the one door had two leaves and their hinges, and the other door had two leaves and turned on hinges,35being carved with cherubs, and there were palm trees and open flower leaves, and it was overlaid with gold gilded upon the engraving.36And he built the inner court, three rows of hewn stones, and a row of wrought cedar round about, and he made the curtain of the court of the porch of the house that was in front of the temple.

1And King Shelomoh sent, and took Chiram out of Tzor,2the son of a widow woman; and he was of the tribe of Naftali, and his father was a Tyrian; a worker in brass, and accomplished in art and skill and knowledge to work every work in brass: and he was brought in to King Shelomoh, and he wrought all the works.3And he cast the two pillars for the porch of the house: eighteen cubits was the height of each pillar, and a circumference of fourteen cubits encompassed it, even the thickness of the pillar: the flutings were four fingers wide, and thus was the other pillar formed.4And he made two molten chapiters to put on the heads of the pillars: five cubits was the height of one chapiter, and five cubits was the height of the other chapiter.5And he made two ornaments of network to cover the chapiters of the pillars; even a net for one chapiter, and a net for the other chapiter.6And hanging work, two rows of brazen pomegranates, formed with network, hanging work, row upon row: and thus he framed the ornaments for the second chapiter.7And he set up the pillars of the porch of the temple: and he set up the one pillar, and called its name Yachin (Jachin): and he set up the second pillar, and called its name Bo'az (Boaz).8And on the heads of the pillars he made lily-work against the porch, of four cubits,9and a chamber over both the pillars, and above the sides an addition equal to the chamber in width.10And he made the sea, ten cubits from one rim to the other, the same was completely circular round about: its height was five cubits, and its circumference thirty-three cubits.11And stays underneath its rim round about compassed it ten cubits round;12and its rim was as the work of the rim of a cup, a lily flower, and the thickness of it was a span.13And there were twelve oxen under the sea; three looking to the north, and three looking to the west, and three looking to the south, and three looking to the east: and all their hinder parts were inward, and the sea was above upon them.14And he made ten brazen bases: five cubits was the length of one base, and four cubits the breadth of it, and its height was six cubits.15And this work of the bases was formed with a border to them, and there was a border between the ledges.16And upon their borders between the projections were lions, and oxen, and cherubs: and on the projections, even so above, and also below were the places of lions and oxen, hanging work.17And there were four brazen wheels to one base; and there were brazen bases, and their four sides answering to them, side pieces under the bases.18And there were axles in the wheels under the base. And the height of one wheel was a cubit and a half.19And the work of the wheels was as the work of chariot wheels: their axles, and their felloes, and the rest of their work, were all molten.20The four side pieces were at the four corners of each base; its shoulders were formed of the base.21And on the top of the base half a cubit was the size of it, there was a circle on the top of the base, and there was the top of its spaces and its borders: and it was open at the top of its spaces.22And its borders were cherubs, and lions, and palm trees, upright, each was joined in front and within and round about.23According to the same form he made all the ten bases, even one order and one measure to all.24And he made ten brazen lavers, each laver containing forty baths, and measuring four cubits, each laver placed on a several base throughout the ten bases.25And he put five bases on the right side of the house, and five on the left side of the house: and the sea was placed on the right side of the house eastward in the direction of the south.26And Chiram made the caldrons, and the pans, and the bowls; and Chiram finished making all the works that he wrought for King Shelomoh in the house of YAHUAH:27two pillars and the wreathen works of the pillars on the heads of the two pillars; and the two networks to cover both the wreathen works of the flutings that were upon the pillars.28The four hundred pomegranates for both the networks, two rows of pomegranates for one network, to cover both the wreathen works of the bases belonging to both pillars.29And the ten bases, and the ten lavers upon the bases.30And one sea, and the twelve oxen under the sea.31And the caldrons, and pans, and bowls, and all the furniture, which Chiram made for King Shelomoh for the house of YAHUAH: and there were eight and forty pillars of the house of the king and of the house of YAHUAH: all the works of the king which Chiram made were entirely of brass.32There was no reckoning of the brass of which he made all these works, from the very great abundance, there was no end of the weight of the brass.33In the country round about Yarden did he cast them, in the clay land between Sukkot (Succoth) and Tzartan.34And King Shelomoh took the furniture which Chiram made for the house of YAHUAH, the golden mizbeach, and the golden table of showbread.35And he put the five candlesticks on the left, and five on the right in front of the oracle, being of pure gold, and the lampstands, and the lamps, and the snuffers of gold.36And there were made the porches, and the nails, and the bowls, and the spoons, and the golden censers, of pure gold: and the panels of the doors of the innermost part of the house, even the holy of holies, and the golden doors of the temple.37So the work of the house of YAHUAH which Shelomoh wrought was finished; and Shelomoh brought in the holy things of David his father, and all the holy things of Shelomoh; he put the silver, and the gold, and the furniture, into the treasures of the house of YAHUAH.38And Shelomoh built a house for himself in thirteen years.39And he built the house with the wood of Levanon; its length was a hundred cubits, and its breadth was fifty cubits, and its height was of thirty cubits, and it was made with three rows of cedar pillars, and the pillars had side pieces of cedar.40And he formed the house with chambers above on the sides of the pillars, and the number of the pillars was each row forty and five,41and there were three chambers, and space against space in three rows.42And all the doors and spaces formed like chambers were square, and from door to door was a correspondence in three rows.43And he made the porch of the pillars, they were fifty cubits long and fifty broad, the porch joining them in front; and the other pillars and the thick beam were in front of the house by the porches.44And there was the Porch of seats where he would judge, the porch of judgment.45And their house where he would dwell, had one court communicating with these according to this work; and he built the house for the daughter of Par'oh whom Shelomoh had taken, according to this porch.46All these were of costly stones, sculptured at intervals within even from the foundation even to the top, and outward to the great court,47founded with large costly stones, stones of ten cubits and eight cubits long.48And above with costly stones, according to the measure of hewn stones, and with cedars.49There were three rows of hewn stones round about the great hall, and a row of sculptured cedar:50and Shelomoh finished all his house.

1And it came to pass when Shelomoh had finished building the house of YAHUAH and his own house after twenty years, then King Shelomoh assembled all the elders of Yisra'el in Tziyon, to bring the aron of the brit of YAHUAH out of the city of David, this is Tziyon,2in the month of Ethanim.3And the kohanim took up the aron,4and the Mishkan of testimony, and the holy furniture that was in the Mishkan of testimony.5And the king and all Yisra'el were occupied before the aron, sacrificing sheep and oxen, without number.6And the kohanim bring in the aron into its place, into the oracle of the house, even into the holy of holies, under the wings of the cherubs.7For the cherubs spread out their wings over the place of the aron, and the cherubs covered the aron and its holy things above.8And the holy staffs projected, and the ends of the holy staffs appeared out of the holy places in front of the oracle, and were not seen without.9There was nothing in the aron except the two tables of stone, the tables of the brit which Moshe put there in Chorev (Horeb), which tables YAHUAH made as a brit with the children of Yisra'el in their going forth from the land of Mitzrayim.10And it came to pass when the kohanim departed out of the holy place, that the cloud filled the house.11And the kohanim could not stand to minister because of the cloud, because the glory of YAHUAH filled the house.14And the king turned his face, and the king blessed all Yisra'el (and the whole assembly of Yisra'el stood):15and he said, Blessed be YAHUAH Elohim of Yisra'el today, who spoke by his mouth concerning David my father, and has fulfilled it with his hands, saying,16From the day that I brought out my people Yisra'el out of Mitzrayim, I have not chosen a city in any one tribe of Yisra'el to build a house, so that my name should be there: but I chose Yerushalayim that my name should be there, and I chose David to be over my people Yisra'el.17And it was in the heart of my father to build a house to the name of YAHUAH Elohim of Yisra'el.18And YAHUAH said to David my father, Forasmuch as it came into thy heart to build a house to my name, thou didst well that it came upon thy heart.19Nevertheless thou shalt not build the house, but thy son that has proceeded out of thy bowels, he shall build the house to my name.20And YAHUAH has confirmed the word that he spoke, and I am risen up in the place of my father David, and I have sat down on the throne of Yisra'el, as YAHUAH spoke, and I have built the house to the name of YAHUAH Elohim of Yisra'el.21And I have set there a place for the aron, in which is the brit of YAHUAH, which YAHUAH made with our fathers, when he brought them out of the land of Mitzrayim.22And Shelomoh stood up in front of the mizbeach before all the congregation of Yisra'el; and he spread out his hands toward heaven:23and he said, YAHUAH Elohim of Yisra'el, there is no Elohim like thee in heaven above and on the earth beneath, keeping brit and mercy with thy servant who walks before thee with all his heart;24which thou hast kept toward thy servant David my father: for thou hast spoken by thy mouth and thou hast fulfilled it with thy hands, as at this day.25And now, O YAHUAH Elohim of Yisra'el, keep for thy servant David my father, the promises which thou hast spoken to him, saying, There shall not be taken from thee a man sitting before me on the throne of Yisra'el, provided only thy children shall take heed to their ways, to walk before me as thou hast walked before me.26And now, O YAHUAH Elohim of Yisra'el, let, I pray thee, thy word to David my father be confirmed.27But will Elohim indeed dwell with men upon the earth? if the heaven and heaven of heavens will not suffice thee, how much less even this house which I have built to thy name?28Yet, O YAHUAH Elohim of Yisra'el, thou shalt look upon my petition, to hear the prayer which thy servant prays to thee in thy presence this day,29that thine eyes may be open toward this house day and night, even toward the place of which thou saidst, My name shall be there, to hear the prayer which thy servant prays at this place day and night.30And thou shalt hearken to the prayer of thy servant, and of thy people Yisra'el, which they shall pray toward this place; and thou shalt hear in thy dwelling place in heaven, and thou shalt do and be gracious.31Whatsoever trespasses anyone shall commit against his neighbor—and if he shall take upon him an oath so that he should swear, and he shall come and make confession before thine mizbeach in this house,32then shalt thou hear from heaven, and do, and thou shalt judge thy people Yisra'el, that the wicked should be condemned, to recompense his way upon his head; and to justify the righteous, to give to him according to his righteousness.33When thy people Yisra'el falls before enemies, because they shall sin against thee, and they shall return and confess to thy name, and they shall pray and supplicate in this house,34then shalt thou hear from heaven, and be gracious to the sins of thy people Yisra'el, and thou shalt restore them to the land which thou gavest to their fathers.35When the heaven is restrained, and there is no rain, because they shall sin against thee, and they shall pray toward this place, and shall make confession to thy name, and shall turn from their sins when thou shalt have humbled them,36then thou shalt hear from heaven, and be merciful to the sins of thy servant and of thy people Yisra'el; for thou shalt show them the good way to walk in it, and thou shalt give rain upon the earth which thou hast given to thy people for an inheritance.37If there should be famine, if there should be death, because there should be blasting, locust, or if there be mildew, and if their enemy oppress them in anyone of their cities, with regard to every calamity, every trouble,38every prayer, every supplication whatever shall be made by any man, as they shall know each the plague of his heart, and shall spread abroad his hands to this house,39then shalt thou hearken from heaven, out of thine established dwelling place, and shalt be merciful, and shalt do, and recompense to every man according to his ways, as thou shalt know his heart, for thou alone knowest the heart of all the children of men:40that they may fear thee all the days that they live upon the land, which thou hast given to our fathers.41And for the stranger who is not of thy people,42when they shall come and pray toward this place,43then shalt thou hear them from heaven, out of thine established dwelling place, and thou shalt do according to all that the stranger shall call upon thee for, that all the nations may know thy name, and fear thee, as do thy people Yisra'el, and may know that thy name has been called on this house which I have built.44If it be that thy people shall go forth to war against their enemies in the way by which thou shalt turn them, and pray in the name of YAHUAH toward the city which thou hast chosen, and the house which I have built to thy name,45then shalt thou hear from heaven their supplication and their prayer, and shalt execute judgment for them.46If it be that they shall sin against thee (for there is not a man who will not sin), and thou shalt bring them and deliver them up before their enemies, and they that take them captive shall carry them to a land far or near,47and they shall turn their hearts in the land whither they have been carried captives, and turn in the land of their sojourning, and supplicate thee, saying, We have sinned, we have done unjustly, we have transgressed,48and they shall turn to thee with all their heart, and with all their soul, in the land of their enemies whither thou hast carried them captives, and shall pray to thee toward their land which thou hast given to their fathers, and the city which thou hast chosen, and the house which I have built to thy name:49then shalt thou hear from heaven thine established dwelling place,50and thou shalt be merciful to their unrighteousness wherein they have trespassed against thee, and according to all their transgressions wherewith they have transgressed against thee, and thou shalt cause them to be pitied before them that carried them captives, and they shall have compassion on them:51for they are thy people and thine inheritance, whom thou broughtest out of the land of Mitzrayim, out of the midst of the furnace of iron.52And let thine eyes and thine ears be opened to the supplication of thy servant, and to the supplication of thy people Yisra'el, to hearken to them in all things for which they shall call upon thee.53Because thou hast set them apart for an inheritance to thyself out of all the nations of the earth, as thou spokest by the hand of thy servant Moshe, when thou broughtest our fathers out of the land of Mitzrayim, O YAHUAH Elohim. Then spoke Shelomoh concerning the house, when he had finished building it— He manifested the sun in the heaven: YAHUAH said he would dwell in darkness: Build thou my house, a beautiful house For thyself to dwell in anew. Behold, is not this written in the book of the song?54And it came to pass when Shelomoh had finished praying to YAHUAH all this prayer and supplication, that he rose up from before the mizbeach of YAHUAH, after having knelt upon his knees, and his hands were spread out toward heaven.55And he stood, and blessed all the congregation of Yisra'el with a loud voice, saying,56Blessed be YAHUAH this day, who has given rest to his people Yisra'el, according to all that he said: there has not failed one word among all his good words which he spoke by the hand of his servant Moshe.57May YAHUAH our Elohim be with us, as he was with our fathers; let him not desert us nor turn from us,58that he may turn our hearts toward him to walk in all his ways, and to keep all his mitzvot, and his mishpatim which he commanded our fathers.59And let these words, which I have prayed before YAHUAH our Elohim, be near to YAHUAH our Elohim day and night, to maintain the cause of thy servant, and the cause of thy people Yisra'el forever.60That all the nations of the earth may know that YAHUAH Elohim, he is Elohim, and there is none beside.61And let our hearts be perfect toward YAHUAH our Elohim, to walk also holily in his mishpatim, and to keep his mitzvot, as at this day.62And the king and all the children of Yisra'el offered sacrifice before YAHUAH.63And King Shelomoh offered for the sacrifices of peace offering which he sacrificed to YAHUAH, two and twenty thousand oxen, a hundred and twenty thousand sheep: and the king and all the children of Yisra'el dedicated the house of YAHUAH.64In that day the king consecrated the middle of the court in the front of the house of YAHUAH; for there he offered the whole burnt offering, and the sacrifices, and the fat of the peace offerings, because the brazen mizbeach which was before YAHUAH was too little to bear the whole burnt offering and the sacrifices of peace offerings.65And Shelomoh kept the feast in that day, and all Yisra'el with him, even a great assembly from the entering in of Chamat (Hamath) to the river of Mitzrayim, before YAHUAH our Elohim in the house which he built, eating and drinking, and rejoicing before YAHUAH our Elohim seven days.66And on the eighth day he sent away the people: and they blessed the king, and each departed to his Mishkan rejoicing, and their heart was glad because of the good things which YAHUAH had done to his servant David, and to Yisra'el his people.

1And it came to pass when Shelomoh had finished building the house of YAHUAH, and the king’s house, and all the work of Shelomoh, whatever he wished to perform,2that YAHUAH appeared to Shelomoh a second time, as he appeared in Giv'on.3And YAHUAH said to him, I have heard the voice of thy prayer, and thy supplication which thou madest before me: I have done for thee according to all thy prayer: I have hallowed this house which thou hast built to put my name there forever, and mine eyes and my heart shall be there always.4And if thou wilt walk before me as David thy father walked, in holiness of heart and uprightness, and so as to do according to all that I commanded him, and shalt keep my mishpatim and my mitzvot:5then will I establish the throne of thy kingdom in Yisra'el forever, as I spoke to David thy father, saying, There shall not fail thee a man to rule in Yisra'el.6But if ye or your children do in anywise revolt from me, and do not keep my mitzvot and my mishpatim, which Moshe set before you, and ye go and serve other gods, and worship them:7then will I cut off Yisra'el from the land which I have given them, and this house which I have consecrated to my name I will cast out of my sight; and Yisra'el shall be a desolation and a byword to all nations.8And this house, which is high, shall be so that everyone that passes by it shall be amazed, and shall hiss; and they shall say, Wherefore has YAHUAH done thus to this land, and to this house?9And men shall say, Because they forsook YAHUAH their Elohim, who brought out their fathers from Mitzrayim, out of the house of bondage, and they attached themselves to strange gods, and worshiped them, and served them: therefore YAHUAH has brought this evil upon them. Then Shelomoh brought up the daughter of Par'oh out of the city of David into his house which he built for himself in those days.10During twenty years in which Shelomoh was building the two houses, the house of YAHUAH, and the house of the king,11Chiram king of Tzor helped Shelomoh with cedar wood, and fir wood, and with gold, and all that he wished for: then the king gave Chiram twenty cities in the land of Galil (Galilee).12So Chiram departed from Tzor, and went into Galil to see the cities which Shelomoh gave to him; and they pleased him not. And he said,13What are these cities which thou hast given me, brother? And he called them Boundary until this day.14And Chiram brought to Shelomoh a hundred and twenty talents of gold,26even that for which King Shelomoh built a ship in Etzyon-Gever (Ezion-geber) near Eilot (Eloth) on the shore of the extremity of the sea in the land of Edom.27And Chiram sent in the ship together with the servants of Shelomoh servants of his own, mariners to row, men acquainted with the sea.28And they came to Ofir (Ophir), and took thence a hundred and twenty talents of gold, and brought them to King Shelomoh.

1And the queen of Sheva (Sheba) heard of the name of Shelomoh, and the name of YAHUAH, and she came to try him with riddles.2And she came to Yerushalayim with a very great train; and there came camels bearing spices, and very much gold, and precious stones: and she came in to Shelomoh, and told him all that was in her heart.3And Shelomoh answered all her questions: and there was not a question overlooked by the king which he did not answer her.4And the queen of Sheva saw all the wisdom of Shelomoh, and the house which he built,5and the provision of Shelomoh and the sitting of his attendants, and the standing of his servants, and his raiment, and his cupbearers, and his whole burnt offering which he offered in the house of YAHUAH, and she was utterly amazed.6And she said to King Shelomoh, It was a true report which I heard in my land of thy words and thy wisdom.7But I believed not them that told me, until I came and my eyes saw: and, behold, the words as they reported to me are not the half: thou hast exceeded in goodness all the report which I heard in my land.8Blessed are thy wives, blessed are these thy servants who stand before thee continually, who hear all thy wisdom.9Blessed be YAHUAH thy Elohim, who has taken pleasure in thee, to set thee upon the throne of Yisra'el, because YAHUAH loved Yisra'el to establish him forever; and he has made thee king over them, to execute judgment with justice, and in their causes.10And she gave to Shelomoh a hundred and twenty talents of gold, and very many spices, and precious stones: there had not come any other spices so abundant as those which the queen of Sheva gave to King Shelomoh.11And the ship of Chiram which brought the gold from Ofir, brought very much hewn timber and precious stones.12And the king made the hewn timber into buttresses of the house of YAHUAH and the king’s house, and lyres and harps for singers: such hewn timber had not come upon the earth, nor have been seen anywhere until this day.13And King Shelomoh gave to the queen of Sheva all that she desired, whatsoever she asked, besides all that he had given her by the hand of King Shelomoh: and she returned, and came into her own land, she and her servants.14And the weight of gold that came to Shelomoh in one year was six hundred and sixty-six talents of gold.15Besides the tributes of them that were subjects, both merchants and all the kings of the country beyond the river, and of the princes of the land.16And Shelomoh made three hundred spears of beaten gold: three hundred shekels of gold were upon one spear.17And three hundred shields of beaten gold: and three pounds of gold were in one shield: and the king put them in the house of the forest of Levanon.18And the king made a great ivory throne, and gilded it with pure gold.19The throne had six steps, and calves in bold relief to the throne behind it, and side pieces on either hand of the place of the seat, and two lions standing by the side pieces,20and twelve lions standing there on the six steps on either side: it was not so done in any other kingdom.21And all the vessels made by Shelomoh were of gold, and the lavers were golden, and all the vessels of the house of the forest of Levanon were of pure gold; there was no silver, for it was not accounted of in the days of Shelomoh.22For Shelomoh had a ship of Tarshish in the sea with the ships of Chiram: one ship came to the king every three years out of Tarshish, laden with gold and silver, and wrought stones, and hewn stones. This was the arrangement of the provision which King Shelomoh fetched to build the house of YAHUAH, and the house of the king, and the wall of Yerushalayim, and the citadel; to fortify the city of David, and Chatzor, and Megiddo, and Gezer, and Beit-Choron the upper, and Jethermath, and all the cities of the chariots, and all the cities of the horsemen, and the fortification of Shelomoh which he purposed to build in Yerushalayim and in all the land, so that none of the people should rule over him that was left of the Chitti (Hittite) and the Emori (Amorite), and the Perizzi (Perizzite), and the Kena'ani, and the Chivi (Hivite), and the Yevusi (Jebusite), and the Girgashi (Girgashite), who were not of the children of Yisra'el, their descendants who had been left with him in the land, whom the children of Yisra'el could not utterly destroy; and Shelomoh made them tributaries until this day. But of the children of Yisra'el Shelomoh made nothing; for they were the warriors, and his servants and rulers, and captains of the third order, and the captains of his chariots, and his horsemen.23And Shelomoh increased beyond all the kings of the earth in wealth and wisdom.24And all the kings of the earth sought the presence of Shelomoh, to hear his wisdom which YAHUAH had put into his heart.25And they brought every one their gifts, vessels of gold, and raiment, and stacte, and spices, and horses, and mules, a rate year by year.26And Shelomoh had four thousand mares for his chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen: and he put them in the cities of his chariots, and with the king in Yerushalayim: and he ruled over all the kings from the river to the land of the Pelishtim, and to the borders of Mitzrayim.27And the king made gold and silver in Yerushalayim as stones, and he made cedars as the sycamores in the plain for multitude.28And the goings forth of Shelomoh’s horsemen was also out of Mitzrayim, and the king’s merchants were of Kue; and they received them out of Kue at a price.29And that which proceeded out of Mitzrayim went up thus, even a chariot for a hundred shekels of silver, and a horse for fifty shekels of silver: and thus for all the kings of the Chittim (Hittites), and the kings of Aram (Syria), they came out by sea.

1And King Shelomoh was a lover of women. And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines. And he took strange women, as well as the daughter of Par'oh, Moabitish, Ammonitish women, Aramim and Adomim (Edomites), Chittim, and Emori;2of the nations concerning whom YAHUAH forbade the children of Yisra'el, saying, Ye shall not go in to them, and they shall not come in to you, lest they turn away your hearts after their idols: Shelomoh clove to these in love.4And it came to pass in the time of the old age of Shelomoh, that his heart was not perfect with YAHUAH his Elohim, as was the heart of David his father. And the strange women turned away his heart after their gods.5Then Shelomoh built a high place to Kemosh (Chemosh) the idol of Mo'av (Moab), and to their king the idol of the children of Ammon,6and to Ashtoret (Ashtoreth) the abomination of the Tzidonim.7And thus he acted toward all his strange wives, who burned incense and sacrificed to their idols.8And Shelomoh did that which was evil in the sight of YAHUAH: he went not after YAHUAH, as David his father.9And YAHUAH was angry with Shelomoh, because he turned away his heart from YAHUAH Elohim of Yisra'el, who had appeared twice to him,10and charged him concerning this matter, by no means to go after other gods, but to take heed to do what YAHUAH Elohim commanded him; neither was his heart perfect with YAHUAH, according to the heart of David his father.11And YAHUAH said to Shelomoh, Because it has been thus with thee, and thou hast not kept my mitzvot and my mishpatim which I commanded thee, I will surely rend thy kingdom out of thy hand, and give it to thy servant.12Only in thy days I will not do it for David thy father’s sake: but I will take it out of the hand of thy son.13Only I will not take away the whole kingdom: I will give one tribe to thy son for David my servant’s sake, and for the sake of Yerushalayim, the city which I have chosen.14And YAHUAH raised up an enemy to Shelomoh, Hadad the Adomi (Edomite), and Rezon son of Eliada who dwelt in Raama, and Hadad'ezer (Hadadezer) king of Tzovah (Zobah) his master (and men gathered to him, and he was head of the conspiracy, and he seized on Dammesek (Damascus)), and they were adversaries to Yisra'el all the days of Shelomoh: and Hadad the Adomi was of the seed royal in Edom.15And it happened, that while David was utterly destroying Edom, while Yo'av captain of the host was going to bury the dead, when they slew every male in Edom16(for Yo'av and all Yisra'el abode there six months in Edom, until he utterly destroyed every male in Edom);17that Hadad ran away, he and all the Adomim of the servants of his father with him; and they went into Mitzrayim; and Hadad was then a little child.18And there rise up men out of the city of Midyan (Midian), and they come to Paran, and take men with them, and come to Par'oh king of Mitzrayim: and Hadad went in to Par'oh, and he gave him a house, and appointed him provision.19And Hadad found great favor in the sight of Par'oh, and he gave him his wife’s sister in marriage, the elder sister of Tachpenes (Tahpenes).20And the sister of Tachpenes bore to him, even to Hadad, Genubath her son; and Tachpenes brought him up in the midst of the sons of Par'oh, and Genubath was in the midst of the sons of Par'oh.21And Hadad heard in Mitzrayim that David slept with his fathers, and that Yo'av the captain of the host was dead; and Hadad said to Par'oh, Let me go, and I will return to my country.22And Par'oh said to Hadad, What lackest thou with me? that lo! thou seekest to depart to thy country? and Hadad said to him, By all means let me go. So Hadad returned to his country;25this is the mischief which Hadad did, and he was a bitter enemy of Yisra'el, and he reigned in the land of Edom.26And Yarov'am (Jeroboam) the son of Nevat (Nebat), the Ephraimite of Tzredah (Zeredah), the son of a widow, was servant of Shelomoh.27And this was the occasion of his lifting up his hands against King Shelomoh: now King Shelomoh built the citadel, he completed the fortification of the city of David his father.28And the man Yarov'am was very strong; and Shelomoh saw the young man that he was active, and he set him over the levies of the house of Yosef (Joseph).29And it came to pass at that time, that Yarov'am went forth from Yerushalayim, and Achiyah the Shiloni (Shilonite) the navi found him in the way, and caused him to turn aside out of the way: and Achiyah was clad with a new garment, and they two were alone in the field.30And Achiyah laid hold of his new garment that was upon him, and tore it into twelve pieces:31and he said to Yarov'am, Take to thyself ten pieces, for thus saith YAHUAH Elohim of Yisra'el, Behold, I rend the kingdom out of the hand of Shelomoh, and will give thee ten tribes.32Yet he shall have two tribes, for my servant David’s sake, and for the sake of Yerushalayim, the city which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Yisra'el.33Because he forsook me, and sacrificed to Ashtoret the abomination of the Tzidonim, and to Kemosh, and to the idols of Mo'av, and to their king the abomination of the children of Ammon, and he walked not in my ways, to do that which was right before me, as David his father did.34Howbeit I will not take the whole kingdom out of his hand (for I will certainly resist him all the days of his life), for David my servant’s sake, whom I have chosen.35But I will take the kingdom out of the hand of his son, and give thee ten tribes.36But to his son I will give the two remaining tribes, that my servant David may have an establishment continually before me in Yerushalayim, the city which I have chosen for myself to put my name there.37And I will take thee, and thou shalt reign as thy soul desires, and thou shalt be king over Yisra'el.38And it shall come to pass, if thou wilt keep all the mitzvot that I shall give thee, and wilt walk in my ways, and do that which is right before me, to keep my mishpatim and my mitzvot, as David my servant did, that I will be with thee, and will build thee a sure house, as I built to David.40And Shelomoh sought to slay Yarov'am: but he arose and fled into Mitzrayim, to Shishak king of Mitzrayim, and he was in Mitzrayim until Shelomoh died.41And the rest of the history of Shelomoh, and all that he did, and all his wisdom, behold are not these things written in the book of the life of Shelomoh?42And the days during which Shelomoh reigned in Yerushalayim over all Yisra'el were forty years.43And Shelomoh slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city of David his father. And it came to pass when Yarov'am son of Nevat heard of it, even while he was yet in Mitzrayim as he fled from the face of Shelomoh and dwelt in Mitzrayim, he straightaway comes into his own city, into the land of Tzredah in the mount of Efrayim. And King Shelomoh slept with his fathers, and Rechav'am (Rehoboam) his son reigned in his stead.

1And King Rechav'am goes to Shechem; for all Yisra'el were coming to Shechem to make him king.3And the people spoke to King Rechav'am, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy;4but do thou now lighten somewhat of the hard service of thy father, and of his heavy yoke which he put upon us, and we will serve thee.5And he said to them, Depart for three days, and return to me. And they departed.6And the king referred the matter to the elders, who stood before Shelomoh his father while he was yet living, saying, How do ye advise that I should answer this people?7And they spoke to him, saying, If thou wilt this day be a servant to this people, and wilt serve them, and wilt speak to them good words, then will they be thy servants continually.8But he forsook the counsel of the old men which they gave him, and consulted with the young men who were brought up with him, who stood in his presence.9And he said to them, What counsel do ye give? And what shall I answer to this people who speak to me, saying, Lighten somewhat of the yoke which thy father has put upon us?10And the young men who had been brought up with him, who stood before his face, spoke to him, saying, Thus shalt thou say to this people who have spoken to thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, and do thou now lighten it from off us: thus shalt thou say to them, My little finger shall be thicker than my father’s loins.11And whereas my father did lade you with a heavy yoke, I also will add to your yoke: my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.12And all Yisra'el came to King Rechav'am on the third day, as the king spoke to them, saying, Return to me on the third day.13And the king answered the people harshly; and Rechav'am forsook the counsel of the old men which they counseled him.14And he spoke to them according to the counsel of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, and I will add to your yoke: my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.15And the king hearkened not to the people, because the change was from YAHUAH, that he might establish his word which he spoke by Achiyah the Shiloni concerning Yarov'am the son of Nevat.16And all Yisra'el saw that the king did not hearken to them: and the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? neither have we any inheritance in the son of Yishai (Jesse). Depart, O Yisra'el, to thy tents: now feed thine own house, David. So Yisra'el departed to his tents.18And the king sent Adoram who was over the tribute; and they stoned him with stones, and he died: and King Rechav'am made haste to rise to flee to Yerushalayim.19So Yisra'el rebelled against the house of David until this day.20And it came to pass when all Yisra'el heard that Yarov'am had returned out of Mitzrayim, that they sent and called him to the assembly, and they made him king over Yisra'el: and none followed the house of David except the tribe of Yehudah and Binyamin only.21And Rechav'am went into Yerushalayim, and he assembled the congregation of Yehudah, and the tribe of Binyamin, a hundred and twenty thousand young men, warriors, to fight against the house of Yisra'el, to recover the kingdom to Rechav'am the son of Shelomoh.22And the word of YAHUAH came to Shemayah (Shemaiah) the man of Elohim, saying,23Speak to Rechav'am the son of Shelomoh, king of Yehudah, and to all the house of Yehudah and Binyamin, and to the remnant of the people, saying,24Thus saith YAHUAH, Ye shall not go up, neither shall ye fight with your brethren the sons of Yisra'el: return each man to his own home; for this thing is from me; and they hearkened to the word of YAHUAH, and they ceased from going up, according to the word of YAHUAH. So King Shelomoh sleeps with his fathers, and is buried with his fathers in the city of David; and Rechav'am his son reigned in his stead in Yerushalayim, being sixteen years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twelve years in Yerushalayim: and his mother’s name was Na'amah (Naamah), daughter of Chanun (Hanun) son of Nachash (Nahash) king of the children of Ammon. And he did that which was evil in the sight of YAHUAH, and walked not in the way of David his father. And there was a man of Mount Efrayim, a servant to Shelomoh, and his name was Yarov'am; and the name of his mother was Tzeru'ah (Zeruah), a harlot; and Shelomoh made him head of the levies of the house of Yosef: and he built for Shelomoh Tzredah in Mount Efrayim; and he had three hundred chariots of horses: he built the citadel with the levies of the house of Efrayim; he fortified the city of David, and aspired to the kingdom. And Shelomoh sought to kill him; and he was afraid, and escaped to Shishak king of Mitzrayim, and was with him until Shelomoh died. And Yarov'am heard in Mitzrayim that Shelomoh was dead; and he spoke in the ears of Shishak king of Mitzrayim, saying, Let me go, and I will depart into my land; and Shishak said to him, Ask any request, and I will grant it thee. And Shishak gave to Yarov'am Ano the eldest sister of Tachpenes his wife, to be his wife: she was great among the daughters of the king, and she bore to Yarov'am Aviyah (Abijah) his son: and Yarov'am said to Shishak, Let me indeed go, and I will depart. And Yarov'am departed out of Mitzrayim, and came into the land of Tzredah that was in Mount Efrayim, and thither the whole tribe of Efrayim assembles, and Yarov'am built a fortress there. And his young child was sick with a very severe sickness; and Yarov'am went to inquire concerning the child: and he said to Ano his wife, Arise, go, inquire of Elohim concerning the child, whether he shall recover from his sickness. Now there was a man in Shilo, and his name was Achiyah: and he was sixty years old, and the word of YAHUAH was with him. And Yarov'am said to his wife, Arise, and take in thy hand loaves for the man of Elohim, and cakes for his children, and grapes, and a pot of honey. And the woman arose, and took in her hand bread, and two cakes, and grapes, and a pot of honey, for Achiyah: and the man was old, and his eyes were dim, so that he could not see. And she arose up from Tzredah and went; and it came to pass when she had come into the city to Achiyah the Shiloni, that Achiyah said to his servant, Go out now to meet Ano the wife of Yarov'am, and thou shalt say to her, Come in, and stand not still: for thus saith YAHUAH, I send grievous tidings to thee. And Ano went in to the man of Elohim; and Achiyah said to her, Why hast thou brought me bread and grapes, and cakes, and a pot of honey? Thus saith YAHUAH, Behold, thou shalt depart from me, and it shall come to pass when thou hast entered into the city, even into Tzredah, that thy maidens shall come out to meet thee, and shall say to thee, The child is dead: for thus saith YAHUAH, Behold, I will destroy every male of Yarov'am, and there shall be the dead of Yarov'am in the city, them the dogs shall eat, and him that has died in the field shall the birds of the air eat, and he shall lament for the child, saying, Woe is me, YAHUAH! for there has been found in him some good thing touching YAHUAH. And the woman departed, when she heard this: and it came to pass as she entered into Tzredah, that the child died; and there came forth a wailing to meet her. And Yarov'am went to Shechem in Mount Efrayim, and assembled there the tribes of Yisra'el; and Rechav'am the son of Shelomoh went up thither. And the word of YAHUAH came to Shemayah son of Enlami, saying, Take to thyself a new garment which has not gone into the water, and rend it into twelve pieces; and thou shalt give some to Yarov'am, and shalt say to him, Thus saith YAHUAH, Take to thyself ten pieces to cover thee: and Yarov'am took them: and Shemayah said, Thus saith YAHUAH concerning the ten tribes of Yisra'el. And the people said to Rechav'am the son of Shelomoh, Thy father made his yoke heavy upon us, and made the meat of his table heavy; and now thou shalt lighten them upon us, and we will serve thee. And Rechav'am said to the people, Wait three days, and I will return you an answer: and Rechav'am said, Bring in to me the elders, and I will take counsel with them what I shall answer to the people on the third day. So Rechav'am spoke in their ears, as the people sent to him to say: and the elders of the people said, Thus the people have spoken to thee. And Rechav'am rejected their counsel, and it pleased him not: and he sent and brought in those who had been brought up with him; and he said to them, Thus and thus has the people sent to me to say: and they that had been brought up with him said, Thus shalt thou speak to the people, saying, My little finger shall be thicker than my father’s loins; my father scourged you with whips, but I will rule you with scorpions. And the saying pleased Rechav'am, and he answered the people as the young men, they that were brought up with him, counseled him: and all the people spoke as one man, every one to his neighbor, and they cried out all together, saying, We have no part in David, nor inheritance in the son of Yishai: to thy tents, O Yisra'el, every one; for this man is not for a prince or a ruler over us. And all the people was dispersed from Shechem, and they departed every one to his tent: and Rechav'am strengthened himself and departed, and mounted his chariot, and entered into Yerushalayim: and there follow him the whole tribe of Yehudah, and the whole tribe of Binyamin. And it came to pass at the beginning of the year, that Rechav'am gathered all the men of Yehudah and Binyamin, and went up to fight with Yarov'am at Shechem. And the word of YAHUAH came to Shemayah the man of Elohim, saying, Speak to Rechav'am king of Yehudah, and to all the house of Yehudah and Binyamin, and to the remnant of the people, saying, Thus saith YAHUAH, Ye shall not go up, neither shall ye fight with your brethren the sons of Yisra'el: return every man to his house, for this thing is from me. And they hearkened to the word of YAHUAH, and forbore to go up, according to the word of YAHUAH.25And Yarov'am built Shechem in Mount Efrayim and dwelt in it, and went forth thence and built Penu'el (Penuel).26And Yarov'am said in his heart, Behold, now the kingdom will return to the house of David.27If this people shall go up to offer sacrifice in the house of YAHUAH at Yerushalayim, then the heart of the people will return to YAHUAH, and to their master, to Rechav'am king of Yehudah, and they will slay me.28And the king took counsel, and went, and made two golden heifers, and said to the people, Let it suffice you to have gone hitherto to Yerushalayim: behold thy gods, O Yisra'el, who brought thee up out of the land of Mitzrayim.29And he put one in Beit-El (Bethel), and he put the other in Dan.30And this thing became a sin; and the people went before one as far as Dan, and left the house of YAHUAH.31And he made houses on the high places, and made kohanim of any part of the people, who were not of the sons of Levi.32And Yarov'am appointed a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, according to the feast in the land of Yehudah;33and went up to the mizbeach which he made in Beit-El to sacrifice to the heifers which he made, and he placed in Beit-El the kohanim of the high places which he had made. And he went up to the mizbeach which he had made, on the fifteenth day in the eighth month, at the feast which he devised out of his own heart; and he made a feast to the children of Yisra'el, and went up to the mizbeach to sacrifice.

1And, behold, there came a man of Elohim out of Yehudah by the word of YAHUAH to Beit-El, and Yarov'am stood at the mizbeach to sacrifice.2And he cried against the mizbeach by the word of YAHUAH, and said, O mizbeach, mizbeach, thus saith YAHUAH, Behold, a son is to be born to the house of David, Yoshiyahu (Josiah) by name; and he shall offer upon thee the kohanim of the high places, even of them that sacrifice upon thee, and he shall burn men’s bones upon thee.3And in that day one shall give a sign, saying, This is the word which YAHUAH has spoken, saying, Behold, the mizbeach is rent, and the fatness upon it shall be poured out.4And it came to pass when King Yarov'am heard the words of the man of Elohim who called on the mizbeach that was in Beit-El, that the king stretched forth his hand from the mizbeach, saying, Take hold of him. And, behold, his hand, which he stretched forth against him, withered, and he could not draw it back to himself.5And the mizbeach was rent, and the fatness was poured out from the mizbeach, according to the sign which the man of Elohim gave by the word of YAHUAH.6And King Yarov'am said to the man of Elohim, Entreat YAHUAH thy Elohim, and let my hand be restored to me. And the man of Elohim entreated YAHUAH, and he restored the king’s hand to him, and it became as before.7And the king said to the man of Elohim, Enter with me into the house, and dine, and I will give thee a gift.8And the man of Elohim said to the king, If thou shouldest give me the half of thy house, I would not go in with thee, neither will I eat bread, neither will I drink water in this place; for thus YAHUAH charged me by his word, saying,9Eat no bread, and drink no water, and return not by the way by which thou camest.10So he departed by another way, and returned not by the way by which he came to Beit-El.11And there dwelt an old navi in Beit-El; and his sons came and told him all the works that the man of Elohim did on that day in Beit-El, and the words which he spoke to the king: and they turned the face of their father.12And their father spoke to them, saying, Which way went he? and his sons show him the way by which the man of Elohim who came out of Yehudah went up.13And he said to his sons, Saddle me the ass: and they saddled him the ass, and he mounted it,14and went after the man of Elohim, and found him sitting under an oak: and he said to him, Art thou the man of Elohim that came out of Yehudah? And he said to him, I am.15And he said to him, Come with me, and eat bread.16And he said, I shall not by any means be able to return with thee, neither will I eat bread, neither will I drink water in this place.17For thus YAHUAH commanded me by word, saying, Eat not bread there, and drink not water, and return not thither by the way by which thou camest.18And he said to him, I also am a navi as thou art; and an angel spoke to me by the word of YAHUAH, saying, Bring him back to thee into thy house, and let him eat bread and drink water: but he lied to him.19And he brought him back, and he ate bread and drank water in his house.20And it came to pass while they were sitting at the table, that the word of YAHUAH came to the navi that brought him back;21and he spoke to the man of Elohim that came out of Yehudah, saying, Thus saith YAHUAH, Because thou hast resisted the word of YAHUAH, and hast not kept the mitzvah which YAHUAH thy Elohim commanded thee,22but hast returned, and eaten bread and drunk water in the place of which he spoke to thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat bread, and shalt not drink water; therefore thy body shall in nowise enter into the sepulcher of thy fathers.23And it came to pass after he had eaten bread and drunk water, that he saddled the ass for him, and he turned and departed.24And a lion found him in the way, and slew him; and his body was cast out in the way, and the ass was standing by it, and the lion also was standing by the body.25And, behold, men were passing by, and saw the carcass cast in the way, and the lion was standing near the carcass: and they went in and spoke of it in the city where the old navi dwelt.26And the navi that turned him back out of the way heard, and said, This is the man of Elohim who rebelled against the word of YAHUAH.28And he went and found the body cast in the way, and the ass and the lion were standing by the body: and the lion had not devoured the body of the man of Elohim, and had not torn the ass.29And the navi took up the body of the man of Elohim, and laid it on his ass; and the navi brought him back to his city, to bury him in his own tomb,30and they bewailed him, saying, Alas, brother.31And it came to pass after he had lamented him, that he spoke to his sons, saying, Whenever I die, bury me in this tomb wherein the man of Elohim is buried; lay me by his bones, that my bones may be preserved with his bones.32For the word will surely come to pass which he spoke by the word of YAHUAH against the mizbeach in Beit-El, and against the high houses in Shomron (Samaria).33And after this Yarov'am turned not from his sin, but he turned and made of part of the people kohanim of the high places: whoever would, he consecrated him, and he became a kohen for the high places.34And this thing became sin to the house of Yarov'am, even to its destruction and its removal from the face of the earth.

21And Rechav'am son of Shelomoh ruled over Yehudah. Rechav'am was forty and one years old when he began to reign, and he reigned seventeen years in the city Yerushalayim, which YAHUAH chose to put his name there out of all the tribes of Yisra'el: and his mother’s name was Na'amah the Ammonitess.22And Rechav'am did evil in the sight of YAHUAH; and he provoked him in all the things which their fathers did in their sins which they sinned.23And they built for themselves high places, and pillars, and planted groves on every high hill, and under every shady tree.24And there was a conspiracy in the land, and they did according to all the abominations of the nations which YAHUAH removed from before the children of Yisra'el.25And it came to pass in the fifth year of the reign of Rechav'am, Shishak king of Mitzrayim came up against Yerushalayim;26and took all the treasures of the house of YAHUAH, and the treasures of the king’s house, and the golden spears which David took out of the hand of the sons of Hadad'ezer king of Tzovah, and brought them into Yerushalayim, even all that he took, and the golden shields which Shelomoh had made, and carried them away into Mitzrayim.27And King Rechav'am made brazen shields instead of them; and the chiefs of the body guard, who kept the gate of the house of the king, were placed in charge over them.28And it came to pass when the king went into the house of YAHUAH, that the body guard took them up, and fixed them in the chamber of the body guard.29And the rest of the history of Rechav'am, and all that he did, behold, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Yehudah?30And there was war between Rechav'am and Yarov'am continually.31And Rechav'am slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David: and Aviyam (Abijam) his son reigned in his stead.

1And in the eighteenth year of the reign of Yarov'am son of Nevat, Aviyam son of Rechav'am reigns over Yehudah.2And he reigned three years over Yerushalayim: and his mother’s name was Ma'achah, daughter of Avshalom.3And he walked in the sins of his father which he wrought in his presence, and his heart was not perfect with YAHUAH his Elohim, as was the heart of his father David.4Howbeit for David’s sake YAHUAH gave him a remnant, that he might establish his children after him, and might establish Yerushalayim.5Forasmuch as David did that which was right in the sight of YAHUAH: he turned not from anything that he commanded him all the days of his life.7And the rest of the history of Aviyam, and all that he did, behold, are not these written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Yehudah? And there was war between Aviyam and Yarov'am.8And Aviyam slept with his fathers in the twenty-fourth year of Yarov'am; and he is buried with his fathers in the city of David: and Asa his son reigns in his stead.9In the four and twentieth year of Yarov'am king of Yisra'el, Asa begins to reign over Yehudah.10And he reigned forty-one years in Yerushalayim: and his mother’s name was Ana, daughter of Avshalom.11And Asa did that which was right in the sight of YAHUAH, as David his father.12And he removed the sodomites out of the land, and abolished all the practices which his fathers had kept up.13And he removed Ana his mother from being queen, forasmuch as she gathered a meeting in her grove: and Asa cut down her retreats, and burned them with fire in the brook of Kidron.14But he removed not the high places; nevertheless the heart of Asa was perfect with YAHUAH all his days.15And he brought in the pillars of his father, he even brought in his gold and silver pillars into the house of YAHUAH, and his vessels.16And there was war between Asa and Ba'sha king of Yisra'el all their days.17And Ba'sha king of Yisra'el went up against Yehudah, and built Ramah, so that no one should go out or come in for Asa king of Yehudah.18And Asa took all the silver and the gold that was found in the treasures of the house of YAHUAH, and in the treasures of the king’s house, and gave them into the hands of his servants; and King Asa sent them out to the son of Hadad, the son of Tabrimmon son of Hezion king of Aram, who dwelt in Dammesek, saying,19Make a brit between me and thee, and between my father and thy father: lo! I have sent forth to thee gold and silver for gifts: come, break thy league with Ba'sha king of Yisra'el, that he may go up from me.20And the son of Hadad hearkened to King Asa, and sent the chiefs of his forces to the cities of Yisra'el; and they smote Iyon (Ijon), Dan, and Avel (Abel) of the house of Ma'achah, and all Chinneroth, as far as the whole land of Naftali.21And it came to pass when Ba'sha heard it, that he left off building Ramah, and returned to Tirtzah (Tirzah).22And King Asa charged all Yehudah without exception: and they take up the stones of Ramah and its timbers with which Ba'sha was building; and King Asa built with them upon the whole hill of Binyamin, and the watchtower.23And the rest of the history of Asa, and all his mighty deeds which he wrought, and the cities which he built, behold, are not these written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Yehudah? Nevertheless in the time of his old age he was diseased in his feet.24And Asa slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David his father: and Yehoshafat his son reigns in his stead.25And Nadav (Nadab) son of Yarov'am reigns over Yisra'el in the second year of Asa king of Yehudah, and he reigned two years in Yisra'el.26And he did that which was evil in the sight of YAHUAH, and walked in the way of his father, and in his sins wherein he caused Yisra'el to sin.27And Ba'sha son of Achiyah, who was over the house of Belaan son of Achiyah, conspired against him, and smote him in Gibbeton (Gibbethon) of the Pelishtim; for Nadav and all Yisra'el were besieging Gibbeton.28And Ba'sha slew him in the third year of Asa son of Asa king of Yehudah; and reigned in his stead.29And it came to pass when he reigned, that he smote the whole house of Yarov'am, and left none that breathed of Yarov'am, until he had destroyed him utterly, according to the word of YAHUAH which he spoke by his servant Achiyah the Shiloni,30for the sins of Yarov'am, who led Yisra'el into sin, even by his provocation wherewith he provoked YAHUAH Elohim of Yisra'el.31And the rest of the history of Nadav, and all that he did, behold, are not these written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Yisra'el?33And in the third year of Asa king of Yehudah, Ba'sha the son of Achiyah begins to reign over Yisra'el in Tirtzah, twenty and four years.34And he did that which was evil in the sight of YAHUAH, and walked in the way of Yarov'am the son of Nevat, and in his sins, as he caused Yisra'el to sin.

1And the word of YAHUAH came by the hand of Yehu (Jehu) son of Chanani (Hanani) to Ba'sha, saying,2Forasmuch as I lifted thee up from the earth, and made thee ruler over my people Yisra'el; and thou hast walked in the way of Yarov'am, and hast caused my people Yisra'el to sin, to provoke me with their vanities;3Behold, I raise up enemies after Ba'sha, and after his house; and I will make thy house as the house of Yarov'am son of Nevat.4Him that dies of Ba'sha in the city the dogs shall devour, and him that dies of his in the field the birds of the sky shall devour.5Now the rest of the history of Ba'sha, and all that he did, and his mighty acts, behold, are not these written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Yisra'el?6And Ba'sha slept with his fathers, and they bury him in Tirtzah; and Elah his son reigns in his stead.7And YAHUAH spoke by Yehu the son of Chanani against Ba'sha, and against his house, even all the evil which he wrought before YAHUAH to provoke him to anger by the works of his hands, in being like the house of Yarov'am; and because he smote him.8And Elah son of Ba'sha reigned over Yisra'el two years in Tirtzah.9And Zimri, captain of half his cavalry, conspired against him, while he was in Tirtzah, drinking himself drunk in the house of Artza (Arza) the steward at Tirtzah.10And Zimri went in and smote him and slew him, and reigned in his stead.11And it came to pass when he reigned, when he sat upon his throne,12that he smote all the house of Ba'sha, according to the word which YAHUAH spoke against the house of Ba'sha, and to Yehu the navi,13for all the sins of Ba'sha and Elah his son, as he led Yisra'el astray to sin, to provoke YAHUAH Elohim of Yisra'el with their vanities.14And the rest of the deeds of Elah which he did, behold, are not these written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Yisra'el?15And Zimri reigned in Tirtzah seven days: and the army of Yisra'el was encamped against Gibbeton of the Pelishtim.16And the people heard in the army, saying, Zimri has conspired and smitten the king: and the people of Yisra'el made Omri the captain of the host king in that day in the camp over Yisra'el.17And Omri went up, and all Yisra'el with him, out of Gibbeton; and they besieged Tirtzah.18And it came to pass when Zimri saw that his city was taken, that he goes into the inner chamber of the house of the king, and burned the king’s house over him, and died.19Because of his sins which he committed, doing that which was evil in the sight of YAHUAH, so as to walk in the way of Yarov'am the son of Nevat, and in his sins wherein he caused Yisra'el to sin.20And the rest of the history of Zimri, and his conspiracies wherein he conspired, behold, are not these written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Yisra'el?21Then the people of Yisra'el divides; half the people goes after Tivni (Tibni) the son of Ginath to make him king; and half the people goes after Omri.22The people that followed Omri overpowered the people that followed Tivni son of Ginath: and Tivni died and Yehoram (Joram) his brother at that time, and Omri reigned after Tivni.23In the thirty-first year of King Asa, Omri begins to reign over Yisra'el twelve years: he reigns six years in Tirtzah.24And Omri bought the Mount Shomron of Shemer the lord of the mountain for two talents of silver; and he built upon the mountain, and they called the name of the mountain on which he built, after the name of Shemer the lord of the mount, Shomron.25And Omri did that which was evil in the sight of YAHUAH, and wrought wickedly beyond all that were before him.26And he walked in all the way of Yarov'am the son of Nevat, and in his sins wherewith he caused Yisra'el to sin, to provoke YAHUAH Elohim of Yisra'el by their vanities.27And the rest of the acts of Omri, and all that he did, and all his might, behold, are not these things written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Yisra'el?28And Omri slept with his fathers, and is buried in Shomron; and Ach'av (Ahab) his son reigns in his stead. And in the eleventh year of Omri Yehoshafat the son of Asa reigns, being thirty-five years old in the beginning of his reign, and he reigned twenty-five years in Yerushalayim: and his mother’s name was Azuvah (Azubah), daughter of Shilhi. And he walked in the way of Asa his father, and turned not from it, even from doing right in the eyes of YAHUAH: only they removed not any of the high places; they sacrificed and burned incense on the high places. Now the engagements which Yehoshafat made with the king of Yisra'el, and all his mighty deeds which he performed, and the enemies whom he fought against, behold, are not these written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Yehudah? and the remains of the prostitution which they practiced in the days of Asa his father, he removed out of the land: and there was no king in Aram, but a deputy. And King Yehoshafat made a ship at Tarshish to go to Ofir for gold; but it went not, for the ship was broken at Etzyon-Gever. Then the king of Yisra'el said to Yehoshafat, I will send forth thy servants and my servants in the ship: but Yehoshafat would not. And Yehoshafat slept with his fathers, and is buried with his fathers in the city of David: and Yehoram his son reigned in his stead.29In the second year of Yehoshafat king of Yehudah, Ach'av son of Omri reigned over Yisra'el in Shomron twenty-two years.30And Ach'av did that which was evil in the sight of YAHUAH, and did more wickedly than all that were before him.31And it was not enough for him to walk in the sins of Yarov'am the son of Nevat, but he took to wife Izevel (Jezebel) the daughter of Etba'al (Ethbaal) king of the Tzidonim; and he went and served Ba'al (Baal), and worshiped him.32And he set up an mizbeach to Ba'al in the house of his abominations, which he built in Shomron.33And Ach'av made a grove; and Ach'av did yet more abominably, to provoke YAHUAH Elohim of Yisra'el, and to sin against his own life so that he should be destroyed: he did evil above all the kings of Yisra'el that were before him.34And in his days Chi'el (Hiel) the Bethelite built Yericho (Jericho): he laid the foundation of it in Aviram (Abiram) his firstborn, and he set up the doors of it in Seguv (Segub) his younger son, according to the word of YAHUAH which he spoke by Yehoshua (Joshua) the son of Nun.

Eliyahu and the Drought

1And Eliyahu (Elijah) the navi, the Tishbi (Tishbite) of Tishbe of Gil'ad, said to Ach'av, As YAHUAH Elohim Tzeva'ot (of hosts), the Elohim of Yisra'el, lives, before whom I stand, there shall not be these years dew nor rain, except by the word of my mouth.2And the word of YAHUAH came to Eliyahu, saying,3Depart hence eastward, and hide thee by the brook of Kerit (Cherith), that is before Yarden.4And it shall be that thou shalt drink water of the brook, and I will charge the ravens to feed thee there.5And Eliyahu did according to the word of YAHUAH, and he sat by the brook of Kerit before Yarden.6And the ravens brought him loaves in the morning, and flesh in the evening, and he drank water of the brook.7And it came to pass after some time, that the brook was dried up, because there had been no rain upon the earth.8And the word of YAHUAH came to Eliyahu, saying,9Arise, and go to Tzarfat (Zarephath) of the Tzidoni (Sidonian) land: behold, I have there commanded a widow woman to maintain thee.10And he arose and went to Tzarfat, and came to the gate of the city: and, behold, a widow woman was there gathering sticks; and Eliyahu cried after her, and said to her, Fetch me, I pray thee, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.11And she went to fetch it; and Eliyahu cried after her, and said, Bring me, I pray thee, a morsel of the bread that is in thy hand.12And the woman said, As YAHUAH thy Elohim lives, I have not a cake, but only a handful of meal in the pitcher, and a little oil in a cruse, and, behold, I am going to gather two sticks, and I shall go in and dress it for myself and my children, and we shall eat it and die.13And Eliyahu said to her, Be of good courage, go in and do according to thy word: but make me thereof a little cake, and thou shalt bring it out to me first, and thou shalt make some for thyself and thy children last.14For thus saith YAHUAH, The pitcher of meal shall not fail, and the cruse of oil shall not diminish, until the day that YAHUAH gives rain upon the earth.15And the woman went and did so, and did eat, she, and he, and her children.16And the pitcher of meal failed not, and the cruse of oil was not diminished, according to the word of YAHUAH which he spoke by the hand of Eliyahu.17And it came to pass afterward, that the son of the woman the mistress of the house was sick; and his sickness was very severe, until there was no breath left in him.18And she said to Eliyahu, What have I to do with thee, O man of Elohim? hast thou come in to me to bring my sins to remembrance, and to slay my son?19And Eliyahu said to the woman, Give me thy son. And he took him out of her bosom, and took him up to the chamber in which he himself lodged, and laid him on the bed.20And Eliyahu cried aloud, and said, Alas, O YAHUAH, the witness of the widow with whom I sojourn, thou hast wrought evil for her in slaying her son.21And he breathed on the child thrice, and called on YAHUAH, and said, O YAHUAH my Elohim, let, I pray thee, the soul of this child return to him.22And it was so, and the child cried out,23and he brought him down from the upper chamber into the house, and gave him to his mother; and Eliyahu said, See, thy son lives.24And the woman said to Eliyahu, Behold, I know that thou art a man of Elohim, and the word of YAHUAH in thy mouth is true.

The Fire on Karmel
1.0×
1And it came to pass after many days, that the word of YAHUAH came to Eliyahu in the third year, saying, Go, and appear before Ach'av, and I will bring rain upon the face of the earth.2And Eliyahu went to appear before Ach'av: and the famine was severe in Shomron.3And Ach'av called Ovadyahu (Obadiah) the steward. Now Ovadyahu feared YAHUAH greatly.4And it came to pass when Izevel smote the neviim of YAHUAH, that Ovadyahu took a hundred neviim, and hid them by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water.5And Ach'av said to Ovadyahu, Come, and let us go through the land, and to the fountains of water, and to the brooks, if by any means we may find grass, and may save the horses and mules, and so they will not perish from the tents.6And they made a division of the way between them to pass through it: Ach'av went one way, and Ovadyahu went by another way alone.7And Ovadyahu was alone in the way; and Eliyahu came alone to meet him: and Ovadyahu hastened, and fell upon his face, and said, My lord Eliyahu, art thou indeed he?8And Eliyahu said to him, I am: go, say to thy master, Behold, Eliyahu is here.9And Ovadyahu said, What sin have I committed, that thou givest thy servant into the hand of Ach'av to slay me?10As YAHUAH thy Elohim lives, there is not a nation or kingdom, whither my lord has not sent to seek thee; and if they said, He is not here, then has he set fire to the kingdom and its territories, because he has not found thee.11And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Eliyahu is here.12And it shall come to pass when I shall have departed from thee, that the Ruach (spirit) of YAHUAH shall carry thee to a land which I know not, and I shall go in to tell the matter to Ach'av, and he will not find thee and will slay me: yet thy servant fears YAHUAH from his youth.13Has it not been told to thee my lord, what I did when Izevel slew the neviim of YAHUAH, that I hid a hundred men of the neviim of YAHUAH, by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water?14And now thou sayest to me, Go, say to thy master, Behold, Eliyahu is here: and he shall slay me.15And Eliyahu said, As YAHUAH Tzeva'ot before whom I stand lives, today I will appear before him.16And Ovadyahu went to meet Ach'av, and told him: and Ach'av hastened forth, and went to meet Eliyahu.17And it came to pass when Ach'av saw Eliyahu, that Ach'av said to Eliyahu, Art thou he that perverts Yisra'el?18And Eliyahu said, I do not pervert Yisra'el; but it is thou and thy father’s house, in that ye forsake YAHUAH your Elohim, and thou hast gone after Ba'alim (Baalim).19And now send, gather to me all Yisra'el to Mount Karmel (Carmel), and the neviim of shame four hundred and fifty, and the neviim of the groves four hundred, that eat at Izevel’s table.20And Ach'av sent to all Yisra'el, and gathered all the neviim to Mount Karmel.21And Eliyahu drew near to them all: and Eliyahu said to them, How long wilt ye halt on both feet? if YAHUAH be Elohim, follow him; but if Ba'al, follow him. And the people answered not a word.22And Eliyahu said to the people, I am left, the only one navi of YAHUAH; and the neviim of Ba'al are four hundred and fifty men, and the neviim of the groves four hundred.23Let them give us two oxen, and let them choose one for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on the wood, and put no fire on the wood: and I will dress the other bullock, and put on no fire.24And do ye call loudly on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of YAHUAH my Elohim, and it shall come to pass that the Elohim who shall answer by fire, he is Elohim. And all the people answered and said, The word which thou hast spoken is good.25And Eliyahu said to the neviim of shame, Choose to yourselves one calf, and dress it first, for ye are many; and call ye on the name of your god; but apply no fire.26And they took the calf and dressed it, and called on the name of Ba'al from morning till noon, and said, Hear us, O Ba'al, hear us. And there was no voice, neither was there hearing, and they ran up and down on the mizbeach which they had made.27And it was noon, and Eliyahu the Tishbi mocked them, and said, Call with a loud voice, for he is a god; for he is meditating, or else perhaps he is engaged in business, or perhaps he is asleep, and is to be awakened.28And they cried with a loud voice, and cut themselves according to their custom with knives and lancets until the blood gushed out upon them.29And they prophesied until the evening came; and it came to pass as it was the time of the offering of the sacrifice, that Eliyahu the Tishbi spoke to the neviim of the abominations, saying, Stand by for the present, and I will offer my sacrifice. And they stood aside and departed.30And Eliyahu said to the people, Come near to me. And all the people came near to him.31And Eliyahu took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of Yisra'el, as YAHUAH spoke to him, saying, Yisra'el shall be thy name.32And he built up the stones in the name of YAHUAH, and repaired the mizbeach that had been broken down; and he made a trench that would hold two measures of seed round about the mizbeach.33And he piled the cleft wood on the mizbeach which he had made, and divided the whole burnt offering, and laid it on the wood, and laid it in order on the mizbeach, and said, Fetch me four pitchers of water, and pour it on the whole burnt offering, and on the wood. And they did so.34And he said, Do it the second time. And they did it the second time. And he said, Do it the third time. And they did it the third time.35And the water ran round about the mizbeach, and they filled the trench with water.36And Eliyahu cried aloud to heaven, and said, YAHUAH Elohim of Avraham (Abraham), and Yitzchak (Isaac), and Yisra'el, answer me, O YAHUAH, answer me this day by fire, and let all this people know that thou art YAHUAH, the Elohim of Yisra'el, and I am thy servant, and for thy sake I have wrought these works.37Hear me, O YAHUAH, hear me, and let this people know that thou art YAHUAH Elohim, and thou hast turned back the heart of this people.38Then fire fell from YAHUAH out of heaven, and devoured the whole burnt offerings, and the wood and the water that was in the trench, and the fire licked up the stones and the earth.39And all the people fell upon their faces, and said, Truly YAHUAH is Elohim; he is Elohim.40And Eliyahu said to the people, Take the neviim of Ba'al; let not one of them escape. And they took them; and Eliyahu brings them down to the brook Kishon, and he slew them there.41And Eliyahu said to Ach'av, Go up, and eat and drink, for there is a sound of the coming of rain.42And Ach'av went up to eat and to drink; and Eliyahu went up to Karmel, and stooped to the ground, and put his face between his knees,43and said to his servant, Go up, and look toward the sea. And the servant looked, and said, There is nothing: and Eliyahu said, Do thou then go again seven times.44And the servant went again seven times: and it came to pass at the seventh time, that, behold, a little cloud like the sole of a man’s foot brought water; and he said, Go up, and say to Ach'av, Make ready thy chariot, and go down, lest the rain overtake thee.45And it came to pass in the meanwhile, that the heaven grew black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ach'av wept, and went to Yizre'el.46And the hand of YAHUAH was upon Eliyahu, and he girded up his loins, and ran before Ach'av to Yizre'el.

Chorev, and the Still Small Voice

1And Ach'av told Izevel his wife all that Eliyahu had done, and how he had slain the neviim with the sword.2And Izevel sent to Eliyahu, and said, If thou art Eliyahu and I am Izevel, Elohim do so to me, and more also, if I do not make thy life by this time tomorrow as the life of one of them.3And Eliyahu feared, and rose, and departed for his life: and he comes to Be'er-Sheva to the land of Yehudah, and he left his servant there.4And he himself went a day’s journey in the wilderness, and came and sat under a juniper tree; and asked concerning his life that he might die, and said, Let it be enough now, O YAHUAH, take, I pray thee, my life from me; for I am no better than my fathers.5And he lay down and slept there under a tree; and behold, someone touched him, and said to him, Arise and eat.6And Eliyahu looked, and, behold, at his head there was a cake of meal and a cruse of water; and he arose, and ate and drank, and returned and lay down.7And the angel of YAHUAH returned again, and touched him, and said to him, Arise, and eat, for the journey is far from thee.8And he arose, and ate and drank, and went in the strength of that meat forty days and forty nights to Mount Chorev.9And he entered there into a cave, and rested there; and, behold, the word of YAHUAH came to him, and he said, What doest thou here, Eliyahu?10And Eliyahu said, I have been very jealous for YAHUAH Shaddai (the Almighty), because the children of Yisra'el have forsaken thee: they have dug down thine mizbechot, and have slain thy neviim with the sword; and I only am left alone, and they seek my life to take it.11And he said, Thou shalt go forth tomorrow, and shalt stand before YAHUAH in the mount; behold, YAHUAH will pass by. And, behold, a great and strong wind rending the mountains, and crushing the rocks before YAHUAH; but YAHUAH was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake; but YAHUAH was not in the earthquake:12and after the earthquake a fire; but YAHUAH was not in the fire: and after the fire the voice of a gentle breeze.13And it came to pass when Eliyahu heard, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went forth and stood in the cave: and, behold, a voice came to him and said, What doest thou here, Eliyahu?14And Eliyahu said, I have been very jealous for YAHUAH Shaddai; for the children of Yisra'el have forsaken thy brit, and they have overthrown thine mizbechot, and have slain thy neviim with the sword! and I am left entirely alone, and they seek my life to take it.15And YAHUAH said to him, Go, return, and thou shalt come into the way of the wilderness of Dammesek: and thou shalt go and anoint Chaza'el (Hazael) to be king over Aram.16And Yehu the son of Nimshi shalt thou anoint to be king over Yisra'el; and Elisha the son of Shafat (Shaphat) shalt thou anoint to be navi in thy room.17And it shall come to pass, that him that escapes from the sword of Chaza'el, Yehu shall slay; and him that escapes from the sword of Yehu, Elisha shall slay.18And thou shalt leave in Yisra'el seven thousand men, all the knees which had not bowed themselves to Ba'al, and every mouth which had not worshiped him.19And he departed thence, and finds Elisha the son of Shafat, and he was plowing with oxen; there were twelve yoke before him, and he with the twelve, and he passed by to him, and cast his mantle upon him.20And Elisha left the cattle, and ran after Eliyahu and said, I will kiss my father, and follow after thee. And Eliyahu said, Return, for I have done a work for thee.21And he returned from following him, and took a yoke of oxen, and slew them, and boiled them with the instruments of the oxen, and gave to the people, and they ate: and he arose, and went after Eliyahu, and ministered to him.

1And Navot (Naboth) the Yizre'eli (Jezreelite) had a vineyard, near the threshing floor of Ach'av king of Shomron.2And Ach'av spoke to Navot, saying, Give me thy vineyard, and I will have it for a garden of herbs, for it is near my house: and I will give thee another vineyard better than it; or if it please thee, I will give thee money, the price of this thy vineyard, and I will have it for a garden of herbs.3And Navot said to Ach'av, My Elohim forbid me that I should give thee the inheritance of my fathers.4And the Ruach of Ach'av was troubled, and he lay down upon his bed, and covered his face, and ate no bread.5And Izevel his wife went in to him, and spoke to him, saying, Why is thy Ruach troubled, and why dost thou eat no bread?6And he said to her, Because I spoke to Navot the Yizre'eli, saying, Give me thy vineyard for money; or if thou wilt, I will give thee another vineyard for it: and he said, I will not give thee the inheritance of my fathers.7And Izevel his wife said to him, Dost thou now thus act the king over Yisra'el? arise, and eat bread, and be thine own master, and I will give thee the vineyard of Navot the Yizre'eli.8And she wrote a letter in the name of Ach'av, and sealed it with his seal, and sent the letter to the elders, and to the freemen who dwelt with Navot.9And it was written in the letters, saying, Keep a fast, and set Navot in a chief place among the people.10And set two men, sons of transgressors, before him, and let them testify against him, saying, He blessed Elohim and the king: and let them lead him forth, and stone him, and let him die.11And the men of his city, the elders, and the nobles who dwelt in his city, did as Izevel sent to them, and as it had been written in the letters which she sent to them.12And they proclaimed a fast, and set Navot in a chief place among the people.13And two men, sons of transgressors, came in, and sat opposite him, and bore witness against him, saying, Thou hast blessed Elohim and the king. And they led him forth out of the city, and stoned him with stones, and he died.14And they sent to Izevel, saying, Navot is stoned, and is dead.15And it came to pass, when Izevel heard it, that she said to Ach'av, Arise, take possession of the vineyard of Navot the Yizre'eli, who would not sell it to thee: for Navot is not alive, for he is dead.16And it came to pass, when Ach'av heard that Navot the Yizre'eli was dead, that he rent his garments, and put on sackcloth. And it came to pass afterward, that Ach'av arose and went down to the vineyard of Navot the Yizre'eli, to take possession of it.17And YAHUAH spoke to Eliyahu the Tishbi, saying,18Arise, and go down to meet Ach'av king of Yisra'el, who is in Shomron, for he is in the vineyard of Navot, for he has gone down thither to take possession of it.19And thou shalt speak to him, saying, Thus saith YAHUAH, Forasmuch as thou hast slain and taken possession, therefore thus saith YAHUAH, In every place where the swine and the dogs have licked the blood of Navot, there shall the dogs lick thy blood; and the harlots shall wash themselves in thy blood.20And Ach'av said to Eliyahu, Hast thou found me, mine enemy? and he said, I have found thee: because thou hast wickedly sold thyself to work evil in the sight of YAHUAH, to provoke him to anger;21behold, I bring evil upon thee: and I will kindle a fire after thee, and I will utterly destroy every male of Ach'av, and him that is shut up and him that is left in Yisra'el.22And I will make thy house as the house of Yarov'am the son of Nevat, and as the house of Ba'sha son of Achiyah, because of the provocations wherewith thou hast provoked me, and caused Yisra'el to sin.23And YAHUAH spoke of Izevel, saying, The dogs shall devour her within the fortification of Yizre'el.24Him that is dead of Ach'av in the city shall the dogs eat, and him that is dead of him in the field shall the birds of the sky eat.25But Ach'av did wickedly, in that he sold himself to do that which was evil in the sight of YAHUAH, as his wife Izevel led him astray.26And he did very abominably in following after the abominations, according to all that the Emori did, whom YAHUAH utterly destroyed from before the children of Yisra'el.27And because of the word, Ach'av was pierced with sorrow before YAHUAH, and he both went weeping, and rent his garment, and girded sackcloth upon his body, and fasted; he put on sackcloth also in the day that he smote Navot the Yizre'eli, and went his way.28And the word of YAHUAH came by the hand of his servant Eliyahu concerning Ach'av, and YAHUAH said,29Hast thou seen how Ach'av has been pricked to the heart before me? I will not bring on the evil in his days, but in his son’s days will I bring on the evil.

1And the son of Hadad gathered all his forces, and went up and besieged Shomron, he and thirty-two kings with him, and all his horse and chariots: and they went up and besieged Shomron, and fought against it.2And he sent into the city to Ach'av king of Yisra'el, and said to him, Thus says the son of Hadad,3Thy silver and thy gold are mine, and thy wives and thy children are mine.4And the king of Yisra'el answered and said, As thou hast said, my lord, O king, I am thine, and all mine also.5And the messengers came again, and said, Thus says the son of Hadad, I sent to thee, saying, Thou shalt give me thy silver and thy gold, and thy wives and thy children.6For at this time tomorrow I will send my servants to thee, and they shall search thy house, and the houses of thy servants, and it shall be that all the desirable objects of their eyes on which they shall lay their hands, they shall even take them.7And the king of Yisra'el called all the elders of the land, and said, Take notice now and consider, that this man seeks mischief: for he has sent to me concerning my wives, and concerning my sons, and concerning my daughters: I have not kept back from him my silver and my gold.8And the elders and all the people said to him, Hearken not, and consent not.9And he said to the messengers of the son of Hadad, Say to your master, All things that thou hast sent to thy servant about at first I will do; but this thing I shall not be able to do. And the men departed, and carried back the answer to him.10And the son of Hadad sent to him, saying, So do Elohim to me, and more also, if the dust of Shomron shall suffice for foxes to all the people, even my infantry.11And the king of Yisra'el answered and said, Let it be sufficient; let not the humpbacked boast as he that is upright.12And it came to pass when he returned him this answer, he and all the kings with him were drinking in tents: and he said to his servants, Form a trench. And they made a trench against the city.13And, behold, a navi came to Ach'av king of Yisra'el, and said, Thus saith YAHUAH, Hast thou seen this great multitude? behold, I give it this day into thy hands; and thou shalt know that I am YAHUAH.14And Ach'av said, Whereby? And he said, Thus saith YAHUAH, By the young men of the heads of the districts. And Ach'av said, Who shall begin the battle? and he said, Thou.15And Ach'av numbered the young men the heads of the districts, and they were two hundred and thirty: and afterward he numbered the people, even every man fit for war, seven thousand.16And he went forth at noon, and the son of Hadad was drinking and getting drunk in Sukkot, he and the kings, even thirty and two kings, his allies.17And the young men the heads of the districts went forth first; and they send and report to the king of Aram, saying, There are men come forth out of Shomron.18And he said to them, If they come forth peaceably, take them alive; and if they come forth to war, take them alive:19and let not the young men the heads of the districts go forth of the city. And the force that was behind them20smote each one the man next to him; and each one a second time smote the man next to him: and Aram fled, and Yisra'el pursued them; and the son of Hadad, even the king of Aram, escapes on the horse of a horseman.21And the king of Yisra'el went forth, and took all the horses and the chariots, and smote the enemy with a great slaughter in Aram.22And the navi came to the king of Yisra'el, and said, Strengthen thyself, and observe, and see what thou shalt do; for at the return of the year the son of Hadad king of Aram comes up against thee.23And the servants of the king of Aram, even they said, The Elohim of Yisra'el is a Elohim of mountains, and not a Elohim of valleys; therefore has he prevailed against us: but if we should fight against them in the plain, verily we shall prevail against them.24And do thou this thing: Send away the kings, each one to his place, and set princes in their stead.25And we will give thee another army according to the army that was destroyed, and cavalry according to the cavalry, and chariots according to the chariots, and we will fight against them in the plain, and we shall prevail against them. And he hearkened to their voice, and did so.26And it came to pass at the return of the year, that the son of Hadad reviewed Aram, and went up to Afek (Aphek) to war against Yisra'el.27And the children of Yisra'el were numbered, and came to meet them: and Yisra'el encamped before them as two little flocks of goats, but Aram filled the land.28And there came the man of Elohim, and said to the king of Yisra'el, Thus saith YAHUAH, Because Aram has said, YAHUAH Elohim of Yisra'el is a Elohim of the hills, and he is not a Elohim of the valleys, therefore will I give this great army into thy hand, and thou shalt know that I am YAHUAH.29And they encamp one over against the other before them seven days. And it came to pass on the seventh day that the battle drew on, and Yisra'el smote Aram, even a hundred thousand footmen in one day.30And the rest fled to Afek, into the city; and the wall fell upon twenty-seven thousand men that were left: and the son of Hadad fled, and entered into an inner chamber, into a closet.31And he said to his servants, I know that the kings of Yisra'el are merciful kings: let us now put sackcloth upon our loins, and ropes upon our heads, and let us go forth to the king of Yisra'el, if by any means he will save our souls alive.32So they girded sackcloth upon their loins, and put ropes upon their heads, and said to the king of Yisra'el, Thy servant the son of Hadad says, Let our souls live, I pray thee. And he said, Does he yet live? He is my brother.33And the men divined, and offered drink offerings; and they caught the word out of his mouth, and said, Thy brother the son of Hadad. And he said, Go ye in and fetch him. And the son of Hadad went out to him, and they cause him to go up to him into the chariot.34And he said to him, The cities which my father took from thy father I will restore to thee; and thou shalt make streets for thyself in Dammesek, as my father made streets in Shomron; and I will let thee go with a brit. And he made a brit with him, and let him go.35And a certain man of the sons of the neviim said to his neighbor by the word of YAHUAH, Smite me, I pray. And the man would not smite him.36And he said to him, Because thou hast not hearkened to the voice of YAHUAH, therefore, behold, as thou departest from me, a lion shall smite thee: and he departed from him, and a lion found him, and smote him.37And he finds another man, and says, Smite me, I pray thee. And the man smote him, and in smiting wounded him.38And the navi went and stood before the king of Yisra'el by the way, and bound his eyes with a bandage.39And it came to pass as the king passed by, that he cried aloud to the king, and said, Thy servant went out to war, and, behold, a man brought another man to me, and said to me, Keep this man; and if he should by any means escape, then thy life shall go for his life, or thou shalt pay a talent of silver.40And it came to pass, that thy servant looked round this way and that way, and the man was gone. And the king of Yisra'el said to him, Behold, thou hast also destroyed snares set for me.41And he hastened, and took away the bandage from his eyes; and the king of Yisra'el recognized him, that he was one of the neviim.42And he said to him, Thus saith YAHUAH, Because thou hast suffered to escape out of thy hand a man appointed to destruction, therefore thy life shall go for his life, and thy people for his people.43And the king of Yisra'el departed confounded and discouraged, and came to Shomron.

1And he rested three years, and there was no war between Aram and Yisra'el.2And it came to pass in the third year, that Yehoshafat king of Yehudah went down to the king of Yisra'el.3And the king of Yisra'el said to his servants, Know ye that Ramot-Gil'ad is ours, and we are slow to take it out of the hand of the king of Aram?4And the king of Yisra'el said to Yehoshafat, Wilt thou go up with us to Ramot-Gil'ad to battle?5And Yehoshafat said, As I am, so art thou also; as my people, so is thy people; as my horses, so are thy horses. And Yehoshafat king of Yehudah said to the king of Yisra'el, Inquire, I pray thee, of YAHUAH today.6And the king of Yisra'el gathered all the neviim together, about four hundred men; and the king said to them, Shall I go up to Ramot-Gil'ad to battle, or shall I forbear? and they said, Go up, and YAHUAH will surely give it into the hands of the king.7And Yehoshafat said to the king of Yisra'el, Is there not here a navi of YAHUAH, that we may inquire of YAHUAH by him?8And the king of Yisra'el said to Yehoshafat, There is one man here for us to inquire of YAHUAH by; but I hate him, for he does not speak good of me, but only evil; Mikhayahu (Micaiah) son of Yimlah (Imlah). And Yehoshafat king of Yehudah said, Let not the king say so.9And the king of Yisra'el called a eunuch and said, Bring hither quickly Mikhayahu son of Yimlah.10And the king of Yisra'el and Yehoshafat king of Yehudah sat, each on his throne, armed in the gates of Shomron; and all the neviim prophesied before them.11And Tzidkiyahu (Zedekiah) son of Kena'anah (Chenaanah) made for himself iron horns, and said, Thus saith YAHUAH, With these thou shalt push Aram, until it be consumed.12And all the neviim prophesied in like manner, saying, Go up to Ramot-Gil'ad, and the thing shall prosper, and YAHUAH shall deliver it and the king of Aram into thy hands.13And the messenger that went to call Mikhayahu spoke to him, saying, Behold now, all the neviim speak with one mouth good concerning the king, let now thy words be like the words of one of them, and speak good things.14And Mikhayahu said, As YAHUAH lives, whatsoever YAHUAH shall say to me, that will I speak.15And he came to the king: and the king said to him, Mikhayahu, shall I go up to Ramot-Gil'ad to battle, or shall I forbear? and he said, Go up, and YAHUAH shall deliver it into the hand of the king.16And the king said to him, How often shall I adjure thee, that thou speak to me truth in the name of YAHUAH?17And he said, Not so. I saw all Yisra'el scattered on the mountains as a flock without a shepherd: and YAHUAH said, Is not Elohim lord of these? let each one return to his home in peace.18And the king of Yisra'el said to Yehoshafat king of Yehudah, Did I not say to thee that this man does not prophesy good to me, for he speaks nothing but evil?19And Mikhayahu said, Not so, it is not I: hear the word of YAHUAH; it is not so. I saw the Elohim of Yisra'el sitting on his throne, and all the host of heaven stood about him on his right hand and on his left.20And YAHUAH said, Who will deceive Ach'av king of Yisra'el, that he may go up and fall in Ramot-Gil'ad? and one spoke one way, and another another way.21And there came forth a Ruach and stood before YAHUAH, and said, I will deceive him.22And YAHUAH said to him, Whereby? And he said, I will go forth, and will be a false Ruach in the mouth of all his neviim. And he said, Thou shalt deceive him, yea, and shalt prevail: go forth, and do so.23And now, behold, YAHUAH has put a false Ruach in the mouth of all these thy neviim, and YAHUAH has spoken evil against thee.24And Tzidkiyahu the son of Kena'anah came near and smote Mikhayahu on the cheek, and said, What sort of a Ruach of YAHUAH has spoken in thee?25And Mikhayahu said, Behold, thou shalt see in that day, when thou shalt go into an innermost chamber to hide thyself there.26And the king of Yisra'el said, Take Mikhayahu, and convey him away to Shemer the keeper of the city;27and tell Yoash (Joash) the king’s son to put this fellow in prison, and to feed him with bread of affliction and water of affliction until I return in peace.28And Mikhayahu said, If thou return at all in peace, YAHUAH has not spoken by me.29So the king of Yisra'el went up, and Yehoshafat king of Yehudah with him to Ramot-Gil'ad.30And the king of Yisra'el said to Yehoshafat king of Yehudah, I will disguise myself, and enter into the battle, and do thou put on my raiment. So the king of Yisra'el disguised himself, and went into the battle.31And the king of Aram had charged the thirty-two captains of his chariots, saying, Fight not against small or great, but against the king of Yisra'el only.32And it came to pass, when the captains of the chariots saw Yehoshafat king of Yehudah, that they said, This seems to be the king of Yisra'el. And they compassed him about to fight against him; and Yehoshafat cried out.33And it came to pass, when the captains of the chariots saw that this was not the king of Yisra'el, that they returned from him.34And one drew a bow with a good aim, and smote the king of Yisra'el between the lungs and the breastplate: and he said to his charioteer, Turn thy hands, and carry me away out of the battle, for I am wounded.35And the war was turned in that day, and the king was standing on the chariot against Aram from morning till evening; and he shed the blood out of his wound, into the bottom of the chariot, and died at even, and the blood ran out of the wound into the bottom of the chariot.36And the herald of the army stood at sunset, saying, Let every man go to his own city and his own land,37for the king is dead. And they came to Shomron, and buried the king in Shomron.38And they washed the chariot at the fountain of Shomron; and the swine and the dogs licked up the blood, and the harlots washed themselves in the blood, according to the word of YAHUAH which he spoke.39And the rest of the acts of Ach'av, and all that he did, and the ivory house which he built, and all the cities which he built, behold, are not these things written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Yisra'el?40And Ach'av slept with his fathers, and Achazyahu (Ahaziah) his son reigned in his stead.41And Yehoshafat the son of Asa reigned over Yehudah: in the fourth year of Ach'av king of Yisra'el began Yehoshafat to reign.42Thirty and five years old was he when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty and five years in Yerushalayim; and his mother’s name was Azuvah daughter of Shilhi.43And he walked in all the way of Asa his father: he turned not from it, even from doing that which was right in the eyes of YAHUAH.44Only he took not away any of the high places: the people still sacrificed and burned incense on the high places.45And Yehoshafat was at peace with the king of Yisra'el.46And the rest of the acts of Yehoshafat, and his mighty deeds, whatever he did, behold, are not these things written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Yehudah?51And Yehoshafat slept with his fathers, and was buried by his fathers in the city of David his father, and Yehoram his son reigned in his stead.52And Achazyahu son of Ach'av reigned over Yisra'el in Shomron: in the seventeenth year of Yehoshafat king of Yehudah, Achazyahu son of Ach'av reigned over Yisra'el in Shomron two years.53And he did that which was evil in the sight of YAHUAH, and walked in the way of Ach'av his father, and in the way of Izevel his mother, and in the sins of the house of Yarov'am the son of Nevat, who caused Yisra'el to sin.54And he served Ba'alim, and worshiped them, and provoked YAHUAH Elohim of Yisra'el, according to all that had been done before him.
