Introduction
Introduction to Sefer Bamidbar (The Book of Numbers)
Sefer Bamidbar (The Book of "In the Wilderness") serves as the vital strategic record of Yisrael's historical transition from an unstructured band of liberated refugees into a highly disciplined, mobile nation ready to claim its prophetic inheritance. Positioned structurally between the priestly ordinances of Vayikra (Leviticus) and the final declarations of Devarim (Deuteronomy), this text tracks the operational execution of covenant life within an unforgiving geographic expanse.
This book demonstrates how Yahuah sustains His people even in the wilderness, providing them with laws, boundaries, and a future inheritance. From the Mo'edim (Appointed Times) to the strict ordinances of justice and family stewardship, the book illustrates that Yisra'el's life is entirely defined by the Presence and the Word of the Living Elohim.
Textual Architecture: The Septuagint (LXX) Military Blueprint
As documented across the foundational volumes of the Ivri Heritage Series, this translation operates directly under the ancient textual authority of the Septuagint (LXX), completely circumventing the later medieval alterations embedded in the Masoretic Text (MT). In Sefer Bamidbar, anchoring the translation to the LXX reveals important insights into the administrative organization, age standards, and operational movements of the early assembly:
1. The Levite Mobilization Age Standard
A clear variation between the manuscript traditions appears within Chapter 4. While the Masoretic Text lists the operational age of service for the Kohathites, Gershonites, and Merarites as starting at thirty years old, the Septuagint framework records the operational military and sanctuary labor mobilization age as starting precisely at twenty-five years old (LXX 4:3, 23, 30). This variation provides a wider operational window for the Levite workforce to safely manage, carry, and guard the structural elements of the sanctuary.
2. Structural Lineage and Chronological Markers
The text maintains the original Septuagint ancestral tracking data, resolving genealogical gaps and aligning flawlessly with the historical records quoted directly by the Apostles in the New Covenant writings. Rather than forcing the text into Western chronological frameworks, the numbers and locations track the pristine ancient milestones exactly as they were preserved in the Second Temple era.
Key Linguistic Adaptations
To capture the original cultural setting of the text, this edition strips away Westernized filters by preserving raw, transliterated terms directly on the page: • The Camp Command Structure: Lineage leaders are identified as Nesi'im (Princes/Rulers), commanding a structured Tzava (Military Host/Forces) segmented by Shevet (Tribal Staff/Lineage branch). • The Spatial Core: The focal point of all movement is the Mishkan (Tabernacle) of witness, pitched symmetrically in the center of the Machaneh (Camp/Encampment). • Ritual Tracking Parameters: Actions are categorized under strict ancestral status indicators, processing through Tahor (Clean), Tamei (Unclean), and the legal weight of Avon (Iniquity/Guilt).
Structural Blueprint of the Narrative
The structural movements of Sefer Bamidbar divide into three major functional phrases:
I. Order, Census, and Mobilization (Chapters 1–10)
The book opens with a comprehensive counting (Rosh) of the fighting forces and a precise mapping of the camp coordinates around the Mishkan. It defines the legal parameters for Nazirite vows (Naziyr), documents the uniform dedication gifts of the tribal chiefs, and concludes with the activation of the silver trumpets, signaling the official start of the march (Masa) away from Mount Sinai.
II. The Cycle of Murmuring and Wilderness Judgments (Chapters 11–25)
The narrative shifts into a stark record of human failure, grumbling, and administrative rebellion. It chronicles the internal challenges to Moshe's authority, the catastrophic report of fear brought by the spies at Kadesh-Barnea, the total destruction of Korach's systemic coup, the passing of Aharon, and the prophetic failure of Balaam's oracles, culminating in the clean execution of judgment by Pinechas at Shittim.
III. Preparation for the Next Generation (Chapters 26–36)
A new military census is conducted to tally the generation born in the wilderness. The text outlines the permanent liturgical map for the Mo'edim (Appointed Times), details the complete destruction of Midyan, maps out the territorial boundaries of the future Canaanite inheritance, establishes the Levite suburbs, and defines the cities of refuge for unintentional slayers.

And the woman shall say, So be it, So be it.”23“And the Kohen shall write these curses in a book, and shall blot them out with the water of the conviction that brings the curse.”24“And he shall cause the woman to drink the water of the conviction that brings the curse; and the water of the conviction that brings the curse shall enter into her.”25“And the Kohen shall take from the hand of the woman the minchat of jealousy, and shall present the offering before Yahuah, and shall bring it to the Mizbeach (מִזְבֵּחַ).”26“And the Kohen shall take a handful of the offering as a memorial of it, and shall offer it up upon the Mizbeach; and afterwards he shall cause the woman to drink the water.”27“And it shall come to pass, if she be defiled, and have altogether escaped the notice of her husband, then the water of the conviction that brings the curse shall enter into her; and she shall swell in her belly, and her thigh shall rot, and the woman shall be for a curse in the midst of her people.”28“But if the woman have not been polluted, and be tahor (טָהוֹר clean), then shall she be guiltless and shall conceive seed.”29“This is the law (Torah) of jealousy, wherein a married woman should happen to transgress, and be defiled;”30“Or in the case of a man on whoever the spirit of jealousy should come, and he should be jealous of his wife, and he should place his wife before Yahuah, and the Kohen shall execute towards her all this law [Torah].”31“Then the man shall be clear from sin, and that woman shall bear her avon [guilt/iniquity/sin].”

1And Yahuah (יהוה) spoke to Moshe (מֹשֶׁה), saying,2“Speak to Aharon (אַהֲרֹן), and you shall say to him, whenever you shall set the lamps in order, the seven lamps shall give light opposite the face of the Menorah (מְנוֹרָה).”3And Aharon did so: on the side opposite the Menorah, he lighted its lamps, as Yahuah appointed Moshe.4And this is the work of the Menorah: it is beaten gold, from its base to its flowers, all beaten work: according to the pattern which Yahuah showed Moshe, so he made the Menorah.5And Yahuah spoke to Moshe, saying,6“Take the Levi’im (לְוִיִּם) out of the midst of the children of Yisra’el (יִשְׂרָאֵל), and you shall purify them.”7“And thus, shall you perform their purification: you shall sprinkle them with water of purification, and a razor shall come upon the whole of their body, and they shall wash their begadim [garments], and shall be tahor [טָהוֹר clean].”8“And they shall take one calf of the herd, and its minchah (מִנְחָה), fine flour mingled with oil: and you shall take a second calf of the herd for a chattat (חַטָּאת sin offering).”9“And you shall bring the Levi’im before the Mishkan (מִשְׁכָּן) of witness; and you shall assemble all the congregation of the children of Yisra’el.”10“And you shall bring the Levi’im before Yahuah; and the children of Yisra’el shall lay their hands upon the Levi’im.”11“And Aharon shall offer the Levi’im as a wave-offering before Yahuah from the children of Yisra’el, that they may be prepared to perform the works of Yahuah.”12“And the Levi’im shall lay their hands on the heads of the calves; and you shall offer one for a chattat [sin offering] , and the other for an olah (עֹלָה) to Yahuah, to make atonement for them.”13“And you shall set the Levi’im before Aharon, and before his sons; and you shall offer them as a wave-offering before Yahuah.”14“And you shall separate the Levi’im from the midst of the children of Yisra’el, and the Levi’im shall be mine.”15“And afterwards the Levi’im shall go in to perform the works of the Mishkan of witness; and you shall purify them, and present them before Yahuah.”16“For they are given to me for a present out of the midst of the children of Yisra’el: I have taken them to myself instead of all the firstborn of the children of Yisra’el that open every womb.”17“For every firstborn amongst the children of Yisra’el is mine, whether of man or beast: in the day in which I struck every firstborn in the land of Mitzrayim (מִצְרָיִם), I sanctified them to myself.”18“And I took the Levi’im in the place of every firstborn amongst the children of Yisra’el.”19“And I gave the Levi’im presented as a gift to Aharon and his sons out of the midst of the children of Yisra’el, to do the service of the children of Yisra’el in the Mishkan of witness, and to make atonement for the children of Yisra’el: thus, there shall be no plague amongst the sons of Yisra’el when the sons of Yisra’el draw near to the Kodesh (קֹדֶשׁ).”20And Moshe and Aharon, and all the congregation of the children of Yisra’el, did to the Levi’im as Yahuah commanded Moshe concerning the Levi’im, so the children of Yisra’el did to them.21So, the Levi’im purified themselves and washed their Begadim [בְּגָדִים garments]; and Aharon presented them as a wave-offering before Yahuah, and Aharon made atonement for them to purify them.22And afterwards the Levi’im went in to minister in their service in the Mishkan of witness before Aharon, and before his sons; as Yahuah appointed Moshe concerning the Levi’im, so they did to them.23And Yahuah spoke to Moshe, saying,24“This is the ordinance for the Levi’im; From twenty-five years old and upward, they shall go in to minister in the service of the Mishkan of witness.”25“And from fifty years old they shall cease from the ministry, and shall serve no longer.”26“But they shall minister with their brothers in the Mishkan of witness, to keep charges, but they shall not do service: so shall you do to the Levi’im in their charges.”

The Second Passover and the Cloud of Presence
1.0×
1And Yahuah (יהוה) spoke to Moshe (מֹשֶׁה) in the wilderness of Sinai, in the second year after they had gone forth from the land of Mitzrayim (מִצְרָיִם), in the first month, saying,2“Speak, and let the children of Yisra’el (יִשְׂרָאֵל) keep the Pesach (פֶּסַח) in its season.”3“On the fourteenth day of the first month at even, you shall keep it in its season; you shall keep it according to all its statutes Chukkah (חֻקָּה):, and according to all its ordinances.”4And Moshe commanded the children of Yisra’el to sacrifice the Pesach.5On the fourteenth day of the first month in the wilderness of Sinai, as Yahuah commanded Moshe, so the children of Yisra’el did.6And there were men who were tamei (טָמֵא - unclean) by reason of the dead body of a man, and they were not able to keep the Pesach on that day; and they came before Moshe and Aharon (אַהֲרֹן) on that day.7And those men said to him, “We are unclean by reason of the dead body of a man: shall we therefore be held back from offering the qorban (קָרְבָּן) of Yahuah in its season in the midst of the children of Yisra’el?”8And Moshe said to them, “Stand still, and I will hear what Yahuah will command concerning you.”9And Yahuah spoke to Moshe, saying,10“Speak to the children of Yisra’el, saying, any man who shall be unclean by reason of a dead body, or be on a journey far off, amongst you, or amongst your posterity; he shall yet keep the Pesach to Yahuah.”11“In the second month, on the fourteenth day at even, they shall offer it, with matzah (unleavened bread) and bitter herbs shall they eat it.”12“They shall not leave any of it until the morning, and they shall not break any bone of it; they shall sacrifice it according to all the ordinances of the Pesach.”13“But the man who is tahor (טָהוֹר - clean), and is not on a journey, and fails to keep the Pesach, that soul shall be cut off from his people, because he has not offered the qorban of Yahuah in its season: that man shall bear his iniquity.”14“And if a stranger Ger (גֵּר) shall sojourn amongst you, and will keep the Pesach to Yahuah; according to the law of the Pesach and according to its ordinance, so shall he do: you shall have one law, both for the stranger, and for the native of the land.”15And on the day that the Mishkan (מִשְׁכָּן) was set up, the cloud covered the Mishkan, the tent of the testimony; and at evening there was upon the Mishkan as it were the appearance of fire until the morning.16So, it was continually: the cloud covered it by day, and the appearance of fire by night.17And whenever the cloud was taken up from the Mishkan, then after that the children of Yisra’el journeyed; and in whatever place the cloud rested, there the children of Yisra’el encamped.18By the commandment of Yahuah the children of Yisra’el journeyed, and by the commandment of Yahuah they encamped: as long as the cloud abode upon the Mishkan they remained in their machaneh (מַחֲנֶה encampment).19And when the cloud tarried long upon the Mishkan many days, then the children of Yisra’el kept the charge of Yahuah, and journeyed not.20And so it was, when the cloud was a few days upon the Mishkan; according to the commandment of Yahuah they remained in their machaneh, and according to the commandment of Yahuah they journeyed.21And so, it was, when the cloud abode from even unto the morning, and that the cloud was taken up in the morning, then they journeyed; or if it continued by day and by night, when the cloud was taken up, they journeyed.22Whether it were two days, or a month, or a year, that the cloud tarried upon the Mishkan, remaining thereon, the children of Yisra’el remained in their machaneh and journeyed not: but when it was taken up, they journeyed.23By the commandment of Yahuah they rested in their machaneh [encampment], and by the commandment of Yahuah they journeyed: they kept the charge of Yahuah, by the commandment of Yahuah by the hand of Moshe.

The Silver Trumpets and the Journey Begins
1.0×
1And Yahuah (יהוה) spoke to Moshe (מֹשֶׁה), saying,2“Make for yourself two trumpets of silver; of beaten work you shall make them: and they shall be for you for the calling of the assembly, and for the journeying of the machanot (מַחֲנוֹת - camps).”3“And when they shall blow with them, all the congregation shall assemble themselves to you at the entrance of the Ohel Mo’ed (Tent of Meeting).”4“And if they blow but with one, then the princes, who are heads of the thousands of Yisra’el, shall gather themselves to you.”5“When you blow an alarm, then the machanot that lie on the east side shall take their journey.”6“When you blow an alarm the second time, then the machanot that lie on the south side shall take their journey: they shall blow an alarm for their journeys.”7“But when the assembly is to be gathered together, you shall blow, but you shall not sound an alarm.”8“And the sons of Aharon (אַהֲרֹן), the priests, shall blow with the trumpets; and they shall be to you for an ordinance forever throughout your generations.”9“And if you go to war in your land against the adversary that oppresses you, then you shall blow an alarm with the trumpets; and you shall be remembered before Yahuah your God, and you shall be saved from your enemies.”10“Also, in the day of your gladness, and in your appointed feasts, and in the beginnings of your new moons (months), you shall blow with the trumpets over your olot (burnt offerings) and over the shelamim (peace offerings); and they shall be to you for a memorial before your God: I am Yahuah your God.”11And it came to pass on the twentieth day of the second month, in the second year, that the cloud was taken up from off the Mishkan of the testimony.12And the children of Yisra’el took their journeys out of the wilderness of Sinai; and the cloud rested in the wilderness of Paran.13And they first took their journey according to the commandment of Yahuah by the hand of Moshe.14In the first place went the standard of the camp of the children of Yehudah (יְהוּדָה) according to their hosts: and over his host was Nachshon the son of Amminadav.15And over the host of the tribe of the children of Yissakhar (יִשָּׂשכָר) was Nethanel the son of Tzu’ar.16And over the host of the tribe of the children of Zevulun (זְבוּלֻן) was Eli’av the son of Chelon.17And the Mishkan was taken down; and the sons of Gershon and the sons of Merari set forward, bearing the Mishkan.18And the standard of the camp of Re’uven (רְאוּבֵן) set forward according to their hosts: and over his host was Elitzur the son of Shede’ur.19And over the host of the tribe of the children of Shim’on (שִׁמְעוֹן) was Shelumi’el the son of Tzurishaddai.20And over the host of the tribe of the children of Gad (גָּד) was Elyasaf the son of De’u’el.21And the Kehatites (קְהָתִים) set forward, bearing the holy things: and the Mishkan was set up against they came.22And the standard of the camp of the children of Efrayim (אֶפְרַיִם) set forward according to their armies: and over his host was Elishama the son of Ammihud.23And over the host of the tribe of the children of Menasheh (מְנַשֶׁה) was Gamliel the son of Pedah-tzur.24And over the host of the tribe of the children of Binyamin (בִּנְיָמִן) was Avidan the son of Gid’oni.25And the standard of the camp of the children of Dan (דָּן), which was the rear guard of all the machanot, set forward according to their hosts: and over his host was Achi’ezer the son of Ammishaddai.26And over the host of the tribe of the children of Asher (אָשֵׁר) was Pag’iel the son of Ochran.27And over the host of the tribe of the children of Naftali (נַפְתָּלִי) was Achira the son of Enan.28Thus were the journeyings of the children of Yisra’el according to their hosts, when they set forward.29And Moshe said to Chovav, the son of Re’u’el the Midyanite, Moshe’s father-in-law, “We are journeying to the place of which Yahuah said, ‘I will give it to you.’ Come with us, and we will do you good, for Yahuah has spoken good concerning Yisra’el.”30And he said to him, “I will not go; but I will depart to my own land, and to my kindred.”31And he said, “Please do not leave us, for you know how we are to camp in the wilderness, and you shall be to us as eyes.”32“And it shall be, if you go with us, it shall be that whatever good Yahuah shall do to us, the same we will do to you.”33So, they departed from the mount of Yahuah three days' journey; and the ark of the covenant of Yahuah went before them in the three days' journey, to search out a resting place for them.34And the cloud of Yahuah was upon them by day, when they went out of the machaneh.35And it came to pass, when the ark set forward, that Moshe said, “Rise up, Yahuah, and let your enemies be scattered; and let those who hate you flee before you.”36And when it rested, he said, “Return, Yahuah, to the ten thousands of the thousands of Yisra’el.”

The Burden of Leadership and the Peril of Unsanctified Desire
1.0×
1And the people murmured sinfully before Yahuah; and Yahuah heard them and was very angry; and fire was kindled amongst them from Yahuah, and devoured a part of the machaneh [encampment].2And the people cried to Moshe; and Moshe prayed to Yahuah, and the fire was quenched.3And the name of that place was called Tav’erah (Burning); for a fire was kindled amongst them from Yahuah.4And the mixed multitude amongst them lusted exceedingly; and they and the children of Yisra’el sat down and wept and said, "Who shall give us flesh to eat?5We remember the fish, which we ate in Mitzrayim freely; and the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the garlic, and the onions.6But now our soul is dried up; our eyes turn to nothing but to the manna."7And the manna was as coriander seed, and the appearance of it the appearance of hoarfrost.8And the people went through the field, and gathered, and ground it in the mill, or pounded it in a mortar, and baked it in a pan, and made cakes of it; and the sweetness of it was as the taste of a wafer made with oil.9And when the dew came upon the machaneh by night, the manna came down upon it.10And Moshe heard them weeping by their families, everyone in his door: and Yahuah was very angry; and the thing was evil in the sight of Moshe.11And Moshe said to Yahuah, "Why have You afflicted Your servant, and why have I not found grace in Your sight, that You should lay the weight of this people upon me?12Have I conceived all this people, or have I born them? that You say to me, 'Take them into your bosom, as a nurse would take her suckling, into the land which You swore to their fathers?'13Whence have I flesh to give to all this people? for they weep to me, saying, 'Give us flesh, that we may eat.'14I shall not be able to bear this people alone, for this thing is too heavy for me.15And if You do thus to me, kill me utterly, if I have found favor with You, that I may not see my affliction."16And Yahuah said to Moshe, "Gather Me seventy men from the elders of Yisra’el, whom you yourself know that they are the elders of the people, and their scribes; and you shall bring them to the Ohel Mo’ed [tent of the meeting], and they shall stand there with you.17And I will go down, and speak there with you; and I will take of the spirit that is upon you, and will put it upon them; and they shall bear together with you the burden of the people, and you shall not bear them alone.18And to the people you shall say, 'Purify yourselves for the morrow, and you shall eat flesh; for you wept before Yahuah, saying, Who shall give us flesh to eat? for it was well with us in Mitzrayim: and Yahuah shall allow you to eat flesh, and you shall eat flesh.19You shall not eat one day, nor two, nor five days, nor ten days, nor twenty days;20you shall eat for a full month, until the flesh come out at your nostrils; and it shall be nausea to you, because you disobeyed Yahuah, who is amongst you, and wept before Him, saying, What had we to do to come out of Mitzrayim?'"21And Moshe said, "The people amongst whom I am are six hundred thousand footmen; and You said, 'I will give them flesh to eat, and they shall eat a whole month.'22Shall sheep and oxen be slain for them, and shall it suffice them? or shall all the fish of the sea be gathered together for them, and shall it suffice them?"23And Yahuah said to Moshe, "Shall not the hand of Yahuah be fully sufficient? now shall you know whether My word shall come to pass to you or not."24And Moshe went out, and spoke the words of Yahuah to the people; and he gathered seventy men of the elders of the people, and he set them round about the Mishkan.25And Yahuah came down in a cloud, and spoke to him, and took of the spirit that was upon him, and put it upon the seventy men that were elders; and when the spirit rested upon them, they prophesied and ceased.26And there were two men left in the machaneh , the name of the one was Eldad, and the name of the other Medad; and the spirit rested upon them, and these were of the number of them that were enrolled, but they did not come to the Ohel Mo’ed; and they prophesied in the machaneh .27And a young man ran and told Moshe, and spoke, saying, "Eldad and Medad prophesy in the machaneh ."28And Yehoshua the son of Nun, who attended on Moshe, the chosen one, said, "My lord Moshe, forbid them."29And Moshe said to him, "Are you jealous on my account? and would that all Yahuah's people were prophets; whenever Yahuah shall put His spirit upon them."30And Moshe departed into the machaneh , himself and the elders of Yisra’el.31And there went forth a wind from Yahuah, and brought quails over from the sea; and it brought them down upon the machaneh a day's journey on this side, and a day's journey on that side, round about the machaneh, as it were two cubits from the earth.32And the people rose up all the day, and all the night, and all the next day, and gathered quails; he that gathered least, gathered ten homers; and they refreshed themselves round about the machaneh .33The flesh was yet between their teeth, before it failed, when Yahuah was angry with the people, and Yahuah struck the people with a very great plague.34And the name of that place was called Kivroth-Hattaavah (Graves of Lust); for there they buried the people that lusted.35The people departed from the Graves of Lust to Chatzerot; and the people halted at Chatzerot.

The Meekness of Moshe and the Rebellion of Miryam
1.0×
1And Miryam (מִרְיָם) and Aharon (אַהֲרֹן) spoke against Moshe (מֹשֶׁה) because of the Kushite woman whom he had married; for he had married a Kushite woman.2And they said, “Has Yahuah indeed spoken only by Moshe? Has He not spoken also by us?” And Yahuah heard it.3(Now the man Moshe was very meek, above all the men who were upon the face of the earth.)4And Yahuah spoke suddenly to Moshe, and to Aharon, and to Miryam, “Come out, you three, to the Ohel Mo’ed.” And the three of them came out.5And Yahuah came down in the pillar of the cloud, and stood in the door of the Ohel Mo’ed, and called Aharon and Miryam; and they both came forth.6And He said, “Hear now My words: If there be a prophet among you, I, Yahuah, will make Myself known to him in a vision, and will speak to him in a dream.”7“My servant Moshe is not so, who is faithful in all My house.”8“With him will I speak mouth to mouth, even apparently, and not in dark speeches; and the similitude of Yahuah shall he behold. Why then were you not afraid to speak against My servant Moshe?”9And the anger of Yahuah was kindled against them; and He departed.10And the cloud departed from off the Mishkan; and, behold, Miryam became leprous, white as snow: and Aharon looked upon Miryam, and, behold, she was leprous.11And Aharon said to Moshe, “Alas, my lord, I beseech you, lay not the sin upon us, wherein we have done foolishly, and wherein we have sinned.”12“Let her not be as one dead, of whom the flesh is half consumed when he comes out of his mother’s womb.”13And Moshe cried to Yahuah, saying, “Heal her now, O God, I beseech You.”14And Yahuah said to Moshe, “If her father had but spit in her face, should she not be ashamed seven days? Let her be shut out from the machaneh seven days, and after that she shall be received in again.”15And Miryam was shut out from the machaneh seven days: and the people journeyed not till Miryam was brought in again.16And afterward the people removed from Chatzerot, and encamped in the wilderness of Paran. The Spies and the Report of Fear
1.0×
1And Yahuah spoke to Moshe, saying,2“Send you men, that they may spy out the land of Kena’an (כְּנַעַן), which I give to the children of Yisra’el: of every tribe of their fathers shall you send a man, everyone a prince among them.”3And Moshe by the commandment of Yahuah sent them from the wilderness of Paran: all those men were heads of the children of Yisra’el.4And these were their names: of the tribe of Re’uven, Shammua the son of Zakkur.5Of the tribe of Shim’on, Shafat the son of Chori.6Of the tribe of Yehudah, Kalev (כָּלֵב) the son of Yefunneh.7Of the tribe of Yissakhar, Yigal the son of Yosef.8Of the tribe of Efrayim, Hoshea the son of Nun.9Of the tribe of Binyamin, Palti the son of Rafu.10Of the tribe of Zevulun, Gaddiel the son of Sodi.11Of the tribe of Yosef, of the tribe of Menasheh, Gaddi the son of Susi.12Of the tribe of Dan, Ammi’el the son of Gemalli.13Of the tribe of Asher, Setur the son of Mikha’el.14Of the tribe of Naftali, Nachbi the son of Vofsi.15Of the tribe of Gad, Ge’u’el the son of Makhi.16These are the names of the men whom Moshe sent to spy out the land. And Moshe called Hoshea the son of Nun, Yehoshua (יְהוֹשֻׁעַ).17And Moshe sent them to spy out the land of Kena’an, and said to them, “Go up this way southward, and go up into the mountain.”18“And see the land, what it is, and the people who dwell therein, whether they are strong or weak, few or many.”19“And what the land is that they dwell in, whether it is good or bad; and what cities they are that they dwell in, whether in camps, or in strongholds.”20“And what the land is, whether it is fat or lean, whether there is wood therein, or not. And be of good courage, and bring of the fruit of the land.” (Now the time was the time of the first ripe grapes.)21So they went up, and spied out the land from the wilderness of Tzin to Rechov, as men come to Chamath.22And they ascended by the south, and came to Chevron; where Achiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the children of ‘Anaq, were. (Now Chevron was built seven years before Tzo’an in Mitzrayim.)23And they came to the valley of Eshkol, and cut down from thence a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they bore it between two upon a staff; and they brought of the pomegranates, and of the figs.24The place was called the brook Eshkol, because of the cluster of grapes which the children of Yisra’el cut down from thence.25And they returned from spying out the land after forty days.26And they went and came to Moshe, and to Aharon, and to all the congregation of the children of Yisra’el, to the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word to them, and to all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land.27And they told him, and said, “We came to the land whither you sent us, and surely it flows with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it.”28“Nevertheless, the people are strong that dwell in the land, and the cities are walled, and very great: and moreover, we saw the children of ‘Anaq there.”29“‘Amalek dwells in the land of the south: and the Chittite, and the Yevusite, and the Emorite, dwell in the mountains: and the Kena’ani dwells by the sea, and by the coast of Yarden.”30And Kalev stilled the people before Moshe, and said, “Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it.”31But the men that went up with him said, “We are not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we.”32And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had spied out to the children of Yisra’el, saying, “The land, through which we have gone to spy it out, is a land that eats up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of a great stature.”33“And there we saw the giants, the sons of ‘Anaq, who come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.”

The Verdict of the Wilderness
1.0×
1And all the congregation lifted up their voice and cried; and the people wept all that night.2And all the children of Yisra’el murmured against Moshe and Aharon; and all the congregation said to them, “Would that we had died in the land of Mitzrayim! Or in this wilderness, would we had died!”3“And why does Yahuah bring us into this land to fall by the sword? Our wives and our children shall be for a prey; now then, is it not better to return into Mitzrayim?”4And they said one to another, “Let us appoint a ruler, and let us return into Mitzrayim.”5And Moshe and Aharon fell upon their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Yisra’el.6But Yehoshua the son of Nun, and Kalev the son of Yefunneh, of the number of them that spied out the land, tore their garments,7and spoke to all the congregation of the children of Yisra’el, saying, “The land which we surveyed is indeed extremely good.”8“If Yahuah delight in us, He will bring us into this land and give it to us; a land which flows with milk and honey.”9“Only rebel not against Yahuah; and fear you not the people of the land, for they are meat for us; their shadow of protection is departed from them, but Yahuah is amongst us: fear them not.”10And all the congregation bade stone them with stones; and the glory of Yahuah appeared in the cloud on the Ohel Mo’ed to all the children of Yisra’el.11And Yahuah said to Moshe, “How long does this people provoke Me? And how long do they refuse to believe Me for all the signs which I have wrought amongst them?”12“I will strike them with death, and destroy them; and I will make of you and of your father’s house a great nation, and much greater than this.”13And Moshe said to Yahuah, “So Mitzrayim shall hear, for You have brought up this people from them by Your might.”14“Moreover, all the dwellers upon this land have heard that You are Yahuah in the wilderness... Your cloud rests upon them, and You go before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, and by night in a pillar of fire.”15“And if You shall destroy this nation as one man, then all the nations that have heard Your fame shall speak, saying,”16“Because Yahuah could not bring this people into the land which He swore to them, He has overthrown them in the wilderness.”17“And now, O Yahuah, let Your strength be exalted, as You spoke, saying,”18“Yahuah is longsuffering and merciful, and true, removing transgressions and iniquities and sins; yet He will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the sins of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generation.”19“Forgive this people their sin according to Your great mercy, as You were favorable to them from Mitzrayim until now.”20And Yahuah said, “I am gracious to them according to your word.”21“But as I live, and as My Name is Living, so the glory of Yahuah shall fill all the earth.”22“For all the men who see My glory, and the signs which I wrought in Mitzrayim, and in the wilderness, and have tempted Me this tenth time, and have not listened to My voice,”23“Surely they shall not see the land which I swore to their fathers; but their children who are with Me here, as many as know not good or evil, every inexperienced youth—to them will I give the land; but none who have provoked Me shall see it.”24“But My servant Kalev, because there was another spirit in him, and he followed Me, I will bring him into the land into which he entered, and his seed shall inherit it.”25“Now the ‘Amaleki and the Kena’ani dwell in the valley: tomorrow turn and depart for the wilderness by the way of the Red Sea.”26And Yahuah spoke to Moshe and Aharon, saying,27“How long shall I endure this wicked congregation? I have heard their murmurings against Me, even the murmuring of the children of Yisra’el, which they have murmured concerning you.”28“Say to them, ‘As I live,’ says Yahuah, ‘surely as you spoke into My ears, so will I do to you.’”29“Your carcasses shall fall in this wilderness; and all those of you that were reviewed, and those of you that were numbered from twenty years old and upward, all that murmured against Me,”30“You shall not enter into the land for which I stretched out My hand to establish you upon it; except only Kalev the son of Yefunneh, and Yehoshua the son of Nun.”31“But your little ones, who you said should be a prey, them will I bring into the land; and they shall inherit the land which you rejected.”32“But your carcasses shall fall in this wilderness.”33“And your sons shall be fed in the wilderness forty years, and they shall bear your whoredoms, until your carcasses be consumed in the wilderness.”34“According to the number of the days during which you spied the land, forty days—a day for a year—you shall bear your sins forty years, and you shall know My fierce anger.”35“I, Yahuah, have spoken: Surely I will do thus to this evil congregation that has risen up together against Me: in this wilderness they shall be utterly consumed, and there they shall die.”36And the men whom Moshe sent to spy out the land, and who came and murmured against it to the assembly so as to bring out evil words concerning the land—37the men that spoke evil reports against the land, even died of the plague before Yahuah.38But Yehoshua the son of Nun and Kalev the son of Yefunneh still lived of those men that went to spy out the land.39And Moshe spoke these words to all the children of Yisra’el; and the people mourned exceedingly.40And they rose early in the morning and went up to the top of the mountain, saying, “Behold, we are here, and we will go up to the place of which Yahuah has spoken, because we have sinned.”41And Moshe said, “Why do you transgress the word of Yahuah? You shall not prosper.”42“Go not up, for Yahuah is not with you; so shall you fall before the face of your enemies.”43“For the ‘Amaleki and the Kena’ani are there before you, and you shall fall by the sword; because you have disobeyed Yahuah and turned aside, and Yahuah will not be amongst you.”44And having forced their passage, they went up to the top of the mountain; but the ark of the covenant of Yahuah and Moshe stirred not out of the machaneh .45And the ‘Amaleki and the Kena’ani that lived in that mountain came down, and routed them, and destroyed them to Chormah; and they returned to the machaneh .

Statutes of the Land and the Tzitzit
1.0×
1And Yahuah spoke to Moshe, saying,2“Speak to the children of Yisra’el, and say to them, ‘When you have come into the land of your habitations, which I give to you,’”3“‘And will make an offering by fire to Yahuah, a burnt offering, or a sacrifice in performing a vow, or as a freewill offering, or in your appointed feasts, to make a sweet savor to Yahuah, of the herd, or of the flock:’”4“‘Then he who offers his offering to Yahuah shall bring a grain offering of a tenth deal of fine flour mingled with the fourth part of a hin of oil.’”5“‘And the fourth part of a hin of wine for a drink offering you shall prepare with the burnt offering or sacrifice, for each lamb.’”6“‘Or for a ram, you shall prepare for a grain offering two tenth deals of fine flour mingled with the third part of a hin of oil.’”7“‘And for a drink offering you shall offer the third part of a hin of wine, for a sweet savor to Yahuah.’”8“‘And when you prepare a bullock for a burnt offering, or for a sacrifice in performing a vow, or peace offerings to Yahuah:’”9“‘Then shall he bring with the bullock a grain offering of three tenth deals of fine flour mingled with half a hin of oil.’”10“‘And you shall bring for a drink offering half a hin of wine, an offering made by fire, of a sweet savor to Yahuah.’”11“‘Thus shall it be done for each bullock, or for each ram, or for a lamb, or a kid.’”12“‘According to the number that you shall prepare, so shall you do to every one according to their number.’”13“‘All that are born of the country shall do these things after this manner, in offering an offering made by fire, of a sweet savor to Yahuah.’”14“‘And if a stranger sojourn with you, or whoever be among you in your generations, and will offer an offering made by fire, of a sweet savor to Yahuah; as you do, so he shall do.’”15“‘One ordinance shall be both for you of the congregation, and also for the stranger that sojourns with you, an ordinance forever in your generations: as you are, so shall the stranger be before Yahuah.’”16“‘One Torah and one manner shall be for you, and for the stranger that sojourns with you.’”17And Yahuah spoke to Moshe, saying,18“Speak to the children of Yisra’el, and say to them, ‘When you come into the land whither I bring you,’”19“‘Then it shall be, that, when you eat of the bread of the land, you shall offer up a heave offering to Yahuah.’”20“‘You shall offer up a cake of the first of your dough for a heave offering: as you do the heave offering of the threshing floor, so shall you heave it.’”21“‘Of the first of your dough you shall give to Yahuah a heave offering in your generations.’”22“And if you have erred, and not observed all these commandments, which Yahuah has spoken to Moshe,”23“Even all that Yahuah has commanded you by the hand of Moshe, from the day that Yahuah commanded Moshe, and henceforward among your generations;”24“Then it shall be, if aught be committed by ignorance without the knowledge of the congregation, that all the congregation shall offer one young bullock for a burnt offering, for a sweet savor to Yahuah, with his grain offering, and his drink offering, according to the manner, and one kid of the goats for a sin offering.”25“And the priest shall make an atonement for all the congregation of the children of Yisra’el, and it shall be forgiven them; for it is ignorance: and they shall bring their offering, a sacrifice made by fire to Yahuah, and their sin offering before Yahuah, for their ignorance:”26“And it shall be forgiven all the congregation of the children of Yisra’el, and the stranger that sojourns among them; seeing all the people were in ignorance.”27“And if any soul sin through ignorance, then he shall bring a she-goat of the first year for a sin offering.”28“And the priest shall make an atonement for the soul that sins ignorantly, when he sins by ignorance before Yahuah, to make an atonement for him; and it shall be forgiven him.”29“You shall have one Torah for him that sins through ignorance, both for him that is born among the children of Yisra’el, and for the stranger that sojourns among them.”30“But the soul that does aught presumptuously, whether he be born in the land, or a stranger, the same reproaches Yahuah; and that soul shall be cut off from among his people.”31“Because he has despised the word of Yahuah, and has broken His commandment, that soul shall utterly be cut off; his iniquity shall be upon him.”32And while the children of Yisra’el were in the wilderness, they found a man that gathered sticks upon the Sabbath day.33And they that found him gathering sticks brought him to Moshe and Aharon, and to all the congregation.34And they put him in ward, because it was not declared what should be done to him.35And Yahuah said to Moshe, “The man shall be surely put to death: all the congregation shall stone him with stones without the machaneh .”36And all the congregation brought him without the machaneh , and stoned him with stones, and he died; as Yahuah commanded Moshe.37And Yahuah spoke to Moshe, saying,38“Speak to the children of Yisra’el, and bid them that they make them fringes in the borders of their garments throughout their generations, and that they put upon the fringe of the borders a ribband of blue:”39“And it shall be to you for a fringe, that you may look upon it, and remember all the commandments of Yahuah, and do them; and that you seek not after your own heart and your own eyes, after which you use to go a whoring:”40“That you may remember, and do all My commandments, and be holy to your God.”41“I am Yahuah your God, which brought you out of the land of Mitzrayim, to be your God: I am Yahuah your God.”

The Rebellion of Korach
1.0×
1And Korach (קֹרַח) the son of Yitzhar, the son of Kehat, the son of Levi, and Datan (דָּתָן) and Aviram (אֲבִירָם), the sons of Eli’av, and On the son of Pelet, the sons of Re’uven, spoke;2and they rose up before Moshe, and two hundred and fifty men of the children of Yisra’el, princes of the congregation, chosen of the assembly, men of renown.3They gathered themselves against Moshe and Aharon, and said to them, “Let it be enough for you, for all the congregation are holy, and Yahuah is among them; and why do you lift yourselves up above the congregation of Yahuah?”4And when Moshe heard it, he fell on his face.5And he spoke to Korach and to all his company, saying, “In the morning, Yahuah will show who are His, and who is holy, and will cause him to come near to Him: even him whom He has chosen will He cause to come near to Him.”6“This do: Take you censers, Korach, and all his company;”7“And put fire therein, and put incense in them before Yahuah tomorrow; and it shall be that the man whom Yahuah chooses, he shall be holy. Let it be enough for you, you sons of Levi.”8And Moshe said to Korach, “Hear, I pray you, you sons of Levi.”9“Is it a small thing to you, that the God of Yisra’el has separated you from the congregation of Yisra’el, to bring you near to Himself to do the service of the Mishkan of Yahuah, and to stand before the congregation to minister to them?”10“And He has brought you near, and all your brethren the sons of Levi with you; and do you seek the priesthood also?”11“For which cause both you and all your company are gathered together against Yahuah: and what is Aharon, that you murmur against him?”12And Moshe sent to call Datan and Aviram, the sons of Eli’av; but they said, “We will not come up.”13“Is it a small thing that you have brought us up out of a land that flows with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness, except you make yourself altogether a prince over us?”14“Moreover, you have not brought us into a land that flows with milk and honey, or given us inheritance of fields and vineyards: will you put out the eyes of these men? We will not come up.”15And Moshe was very wroth, and said to Yahuah, “Respect not their offering: I have not taken one ass from them, neither have I hurt one of them.”16And Moshe said to Korach, “Be you and all your company before Yahuah, you, and they, and Aharon, tomorrow:”17“And take every man his censer, and put incense in them, and bring you before Yahuah every man his censer, two hundred and fifty censers; you also, and Aharon, each of you his censer.”18And they took every man his censer, and put fire in them, and laid incense thereon, and stood in the door of the Ohel Mo’ed with Moshe and Aharon.19And Korach gathered all the congregation against them to the door of the Ohel Mo’ed; and the glory of Yahuah appeared to all the congregation.20And Yahuah spoke to Moshe and to Aharon, saying,21“Separate yourselves from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment.”22And they fell on their faces, and said, “O God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, shall one man sin, and will You be wroth with all the congregation?”23And Yahuah spoke to Moshe, saying,24“Speak to the congregation, saying, ‘Get you up from about the tabernacle of Korach, Datan, and Aviram.’”25And Moshe rose up and went to Datan and Aviram; and the elders of Yisra’el followed him.26And he spoke to the congregation, saying, “Depart, I pray you, from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing of theirs, lest you be consumed in all their sins.”27So they got up from the tabernacle of Korach, Datan, and Aviram, on every side: and Datan and Aviram came out, and stood in the door of their tents, and their wives, and their sons, and their little children.28And Moshe said, “Hereby you shall know that Yahuah has sent me to do all these works; for I have not done them of my own mind.”29“If these men die the common death of all men, or if they be visited after the visitation of all men; then Yahuah has not sent me.”30“But if Yahuah make a new thing, and the earth open her mouth, and swallow them up, with all that appertains to them, and they go down quick into the pit; then you shall understand that these men have provoked Yahuah.”31And it came to pass, as he had made an end of speaking all these words, that the ground clave asunder that was under them:32And the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up, and their houses, and all the men that appertained to Korach, and all their goods.33They, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into the pit, and the earth closed upon them: and they perished from among the congregation.34And all Yisra’el that were round about them fled at the cry of them: for they said, “Lest the earth swallow us up also.”35And there came out a fire from Yahuah, and consumed the two hundred and fifty men that offered incense.36And Yahuah spoke to Moshe, saying,37“Speak to El’azar the son of Aharon the priest, that he take up the censers out of the burning, and scatter you the fire yonder; for they are hallowed.”38“The censers of these sinners against their own souls, let them make them broad plates for a covering of the altar: for they offered them before Yahuah, therefore they are hallowed: and they shall be a sign to the children of Yisra’el.”39And El’azar the priest took the brazen censers, wherewith they that were burnt had offered; and they were made broad plates for a covering of the altar:40To be a memorial to the children of Yisra’el, that no stranger, which is not of the seed of Aharon, come near to offer incense before Yahuah; that he be not as Korach, and as his company: as Yahuah said to him by the hand of Moshe.41But on the morrow all the congregation of the children of Yisra’el murmured against Moshe and against Aharon, saying, “You have killed the people of Yahuah.”42And it came to pass, when the congregation was gathered against Moshe and against Aharon, that they looked toward the Ohel Mo’ed: and, behold, the cloud covered it, and the glory of Yahuah appeared.43And Moshe and Aharon came before the Ohel Mo’ed [Tent of Meeting].44And Yahuah spoke to Moshe, saying,45“Get you up from among this congregation, that I may consume them as in a moment.” And they fell upon their faces.46And Moshe said to Aharon, “Take a censer, and put fire therein from off the altar, and put on incense, and go quickly to the congregation, and make an atonement for them: for there is wrath gone out from Yahuah; the plague is begun.”47And Aharon took as Moshe commanded, and ran into the midst of the congregation; and, behold, the plague was begun among the people: and he put on incense, and made an atonement for the people.48And he stood between the dead and the living; and the plague was stayed.49Now they that died in the plague were fourteen thousand and seven hundred, beside them that died about the matter of Korach.50And Aharon returned to Moshe to the door of the Ohel Mo’ed: and the plague was stayed.

The Blossoming Rod of Aharon
1.0×
1And Yahuah spoke to Moshe, saying,2"Speak to the children of Yisra’el, and take of them rods, according to the houses of their fathers—a rod from each of their princes, according to the houses of their fathers—twelve rods, and write the name of each man upon his rod.3And write the name of Aharon upon the rod of Levi; for there shall be one rod for the head of each house of their fathers.4And you shall place them in the Ohel Mo’ed before the Testimony, where I will make Myself known to you.5And it shall be, that the man whom I shall choose, his rod shall blossom; and I will remove from Me the murmurings of the children of Yisra’el, which they murmur against you."6And Moshe spoke to the children of Yisra’el, and all their princes gave him a rod each, for one prince a rod, according to the house of their fathers, twelve rods; and the rod of Aharon was in the midst of the rods.7And Moshe laid up the rods before Yahuah in the Ohel Mo’ed.8And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moshe and Aharon went into the Ohel Mo’ed; and, behold, the rod of Aharon for the house of Levi blossomed, and put forth a bud, and bloomed blossoms, and produced almonds.9And Moshe brought forth all the rods from before Yahuah to all the sons of Yisra’el; and they looked, and each one took his rod.10And Yahuah said to Moshe, "Lay up the rod of Aharon before the Testimonies to be kept as a sign for the children of the disobedient; and let their murmuring cease from Me, and they shall not die."11And Moshe and Aharon did as Yahuah commanded Moshe, so did they.12And the children of Yisra’el spoke to Moshe, saying, "Behold, we are cut off, we are destroyed, we are consumed.13Every one that touches the Mishkan of Yahuah dies: shall we die utterly?"

Charge and Inheritance of the Priesthood
1.0×
1And Yahuah said to Aharon, “You and your sons and your father’s house with you shall bear the iniquity of the sanctuary: and you and your sons with you shall bear the iniquity of your priesthood.”2“And your brethren also of the tribe of Levi, the tribe of your father, bring you with you, that they may be joined to you, and minister to you: but you and your sons with you shall minister before the Ohel Mo’ed.”3“And they shall keep your charge, and the charge of all the Mishkan: only they shall not come nigh the vessels of the sanctuary and the altar, that neither they, nor you also, die.”4“And they shall be joined to you, and keep the charge of the Ohel Mo’ed, for all the service of the Mishkan: and a stranger shall not come nigh to you.”5“And you shall keep the charge of the sanctuary, and the charge of the altar: that there be no wrath any more upon the children of Yisra’el.”6“And I, behold, I have taken your brethren the Levites from among the children of Yisra’el: to you they are given as a gift for Yahuah, to do the service of the Ohel Mo’ed.”7“Therefore, you and your sons with you shall keep your priest’s office for everything of the altar, and within the veil; and you shall serve: I have given your priest’s office to you as a service of gift: and the stranger that comes nigh shall be put to death.”8And Yahuah spoke to Aharon, “Behold, I also have given you the charge of Mine heave offerings of all the hallowed things of the children of Yisra’el; to you have I given them by reason of the anointing, and to your sons, by an ordinance for ever.”9“This shall be yours of the most holy things, reserved from the fire: every oblation of theirs, every meat offering of theirs, and every sin offering of theirs, and every trespass offering of theirs, which they shall render to Me, shall be most holy for you and for your sons.”10“In the most holy place shall you eat it; every male shall eat it: it shall be holy to you.”11“And this is the heave offering of their gift, with all the wave offerings of the children of Yisra’el: I have given them to you, and to your sons and to your daughters with you, by a statute for ever: every one that is clean in your house shall eat of it.”12“All the best of the oil, and all the best of the wine, and of the wheat, the firstfruits of them which they shall offer to Yahuah, them have I given you.”13“And whatsoever is first ripe in the land, which they shall bring to Yahuah, shall be yours; every one that is clean in your house shall eat of it.”14“Every thing devoted in Yisra’el shall be yours.”15“Every thing that opens the matrix in all flesh, which they bring to Yahuah, whether it be of men or beasts, shall be yours: nevertheless the firstborn of man shall you surely redeem, and the firstling of unclean beasts shall you redeem.”16“And those that are to be redeemed from a month old shall you redeem, according to your estimation, for the money of five shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary, which is twenty gerahs.”17“But the firstling of a cow, or the firstling of a sheep, or the firstling of a goat, you shall not redeem; they are holy: you shall sprinkle their blood upon the altar, and shall burn their fat for an offering made by fire, for a sweet savor to Yahuah.”18“And the flesh of them shall be yours, as the wave breast and as the right shoulder are yours.”19“All the heave offerings of the holy things, which the children of Yisra’el offer to Yahuah, have I given you, and your sons and your daughters with you, by a statute forever: it is a covenant of salt for ever before Yahuah to you and to your seed with you.”20And Yahuah spoke to Aharon, “You shall have no inheritance in their land, neither shall you have any part among them: I am your part and your inheritance among the children of Yisra’el.”21“And, behold, I have given the children of Levi all the tenth in Yisra’el for an inheritance, for their service which they serve, even the service of the Ohel Mo’ed.”22“Neither must the children of Yisra’el henceforth come nigh the Ohel Mo’ed, lest they bear sin, and die.”23“But the Levites shall do the service of the Ohel Mo’ed, and they shall bear their iniquity: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations, that among the children of Yisra’el they have no inheritance.”24“But the tithes of the children of Yisra’el, which they offer as an heave offering to Yahuah, I have given to the Levites to inherit: therefore I have said to them, ‘Among the children of Yisra’el they shall have no inheritance.’”25And Yahuah spoke to Moshe, saying,26“Thus speak to the Levites, and say to them, ‘When you take of the children of Yisra’el the tithes which I have given you from them for your inheritance, then you shall offer up an heave offering of it for Yahuah, even a tenth part of the tithe.’”27“And this your heave offering shall be reckoned to you, as though it were the corn of the threshingfloor, and as the fulness of the winepress.”28“Thus you also shall offer an heave offering to Yahuah of all your tithes, which you receive of the children of Yisra’el; and you shall give thereof Yahuah’s heave offering to Aharon the priest.”29“Out of all your gifts you shall offer every heave offering of Yahuah, of all the best thereof, even the hallowed part thereof out of it.”30“Therefore you shall say to them, ‘When you have heaved the best thereof from it, then it shall be counted to the Levites as the increase of the threshingfloor, and as the increase of the winepress.’”31“And you shall eat it in every place, you and your households: for it is your reward for your service in the Ohel Mo’ed.”32“And you shall bear no sin by reason of it, seeing that you have heaved from it the best of it: neither shall you pollute the holy things of the children of Yisra’el, lest you die.”

The Ordinance of the Red Heifer
1.0×
1And Yahuah spoke to Moshe and to Aharon, saying,2“This is the ordinance of the Torah which Yahuah has commanded, saying: Speak to the children of Yisra’el, that they bring you a red heifer without blemish, wherein is no spot, and upon which never came yoke.”3“And you shall give her to El’azar the priest, that he may bring her forth without the machaneh , and one shall slay her before his face.”4“And El’azar the priest shall take of her blood with his finger, and sprinkle of her blood directly before the Ohel Mo’ed seven times.”5“And one shall burn the heifer in his sight; her skin, and her flesh, and her blood, with her dung, shall he burn.”6“And the priest shall take cedar wood, and hyssop, and scarlet, and cast it into the midst of the burning of the heifer.”7“Then the priest shall wash his clothes, and he shall bathe his flesh in water, and afterward he shall come into the machaneh , and the priest shall be unclean until the even.”8“And he that burns her shall wash his clothes in water, and bathe his flesh in water, and shall be unclean until the even.”9“And a man that is clean shall gather up the ashes of the heifer, and lay them up without the machaneh in a clean place, and it shall be kept for the congregation of the children of Yisra’el for a water of separation: it is a purification for sin.”10“And he that gathers the ashes of the heifer shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the evening: and it shall be to the children of Yisra’el, and to the stranger that sojourns among them, for a statute forever.”11“He that touches the dead body of any man shall be unclean seven days.”12“He shall purify himself with it on the third day, and on the seventh day he shall be clean: but if he purify not himself the third day, then the seventh day he shall not be clean.”13“Whoever touches the dead body of any man that is dead, and purifies not himself, defiles the Mishkan of Yahuah; and that soul shall be cut off from Yisra’el: because the water of separation was not sprinkled upon him, he shall be unclean; his uncleanness is yet upon him.”14“This is the Torah, when a man dies in a tent: all that come into the tent, and all that is in the tent, shall be unclean seven days.”15“And every open vessel, which has no covering bound upon it, is unclean.”16“And whoever touches one that is slain with a sword in the open fields, or a dead body, or a bone of a man, or a grave, shall be unclean seven days.”17“And for an unclean person they shall take of the ashes of the burnt heifer of purification for sin, and running water shall be put thereto in a vessel.”18“And a clean person shall take hyssop, and dip it in the water, and sprinkle it upon the tent, and upon all the vessels, and upon the persons that were there, and upon him that touched a bone, or one slain, or one dead, or a grave.”19“And the clean person shall sprinkle upon the unclean on the third day, and on the seventh day: and on the seventh day he shall purify himself, and wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and shall be clean at even.”20“But the man that shall be unclean, and shall not purify himself, that soul shall be cut off from among the assembly, because he has defiled the sanctuary of Yahuah: the water of separation has not been sprinkled upon him; he is unclean.”21“And it shall be a perpetual statute to them, that he that sprinkles the water of separation shall wash his clothes; and he that touches the water of separation shall be unclean until even.”22“And whatsoever the unclean [tamei] person touches shall be unclean; and the soul that touches it shall be unclean until even.”

The Waters of Strife and the Passing of Aharon

1And the children of Yisra’el, even the whole congregation, came into the wilderness of Tzin in the first month, and the people abode in Kadesh; and Miryam died there, and was buried there.2And there was no water for the congregation: and they gathered themselves together against Moshe and Aharon.3And the people reviled Moshe, saying, “Would that we had died in the destruction of our brethren before Yahuah!”4“And why have you brought up the congregation of Yahuah into this wilderness, to kill us and our cattle?”5“And why is this? You have brought us up out of Mitzrayim, that we should come into this evil place; a place where there is no sowing, neither figs, nor vines, nor pomegranates, neither is there water to drink.”6And Moshe and Aharon went from before the assembly to the door of the Ohel Mo’ed, and they fell upon their faces; and the glory of Yahuah appeared to them.7And Yahuah spoke to Moshe, saying,8“Take your rod, and call the assembly, you and Aharon your brother, and speak you to the rock before them, and it shall give forth its waters; and you shall bring forth for them water out of the rock, and give drink to the congregation and their cattle.”9And Moshe took his rod which was before Yahuah, as Yahuah commanded.10And Moshe and Aharon assembled the congregation before the rock, and said to them, “Hear me, you disobedient ones; must we bring you water out of this rock?”11And Moshe lifted up his hand and struck the rock with his rod twice; and much water came forth, and the congregation drank, and their cattle.12And Yahuah said to Moshe and Aharon, “Because you have not believed Me to sanctify Me before the children of Yisra’el, therefore you shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.”13This is the water of Merivah (Strife), because the children of Yisra’el spoke insolently before Yahuah, and He was sanctified in them.14And Moshe sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom, saying, “Thus says your brother Yisra’el; You know all the distress that has come upon us.”15“And how our fathers went down into Mitzrayim, and we sojourned in Mitzrayim many days, and the Mitzrim afflicted us and our fathers.”16“And we cried to Yahuah, and Yahuah heard our voice, and sent a Messenger and brought us out of Mitzrayim; and now we are in the city of Kadesh, at the extremity of your coasts.”17“We will pass through your land: we will not go through the fields, nor through the vineyards, nor will we drink water out of your cistern: we will go by the king’s highway; we will not turn aside to the right hand or to the left, until we have passed your borders.”18And Edom said to him, “You shall not pass through me, and if otherwise, I will go forth to meet you in war.”19And the children of Yisra’el say to him, “We will pass by the mountain; and if I and my cattle drink of your water, I will pay you: but it is no matter of importance, we will go by the mountain.”20And he said, “You shall not pass through me;” and Edom went forth to meet him with a great host, and a mighty hand.21So Edom refused to allow Yisra’el to pass through his borders, and Yisra’el turned away from him.22And they departed from Kadesh; and the children of Yisra’el, even the whole congregation, came to Mount Hor.23And Yahuah spoke to Moshe and Aharon in Mount Hor, on the borders of the land of Edom, saying,24“Let Aharon be added to his people; for you shall certainly not go into the land which I have given the children of Yisra’el, because you provoked Me at the water of Merivah.”25“Take Aharon, and El’azar his son, and bring them up to the mount Hor before all the congregation;”26“And take Aharon’s apparel from off him, and put it on El’azar his son: and let Aharon die there and be added to his people.”27And Moshe did as Yahuah commanded him, and took him up to Mount Hor, before all the congregation.28And he took Aharon’s garments off him, and put them on El’azar his son, and Aharon died on the top of the mountain; and Moshe and El’azar came down from the mountain.29And all the congregation saw that Aharon was dead: and they wept for Aharon thirty days, even all the house of Yisra’el.

The Brazen Serpent and the Conquest of the Emori

1And ‘Arad the Kena’ani king who lived in the South heard that Yisra’el came by the way of the Atharim; and he made war on Yisra’el, and carried off some of them captives.2And Yisra’el vowed a vow to Yahuah, and said, “If You will deliver this people into my power, I will devote it and its cities to You.”3And Yahuah listened to the voice of Yisra’el, and delivered the Kena’ani into his power; and Yisra’el devoted him and his cities, and they called the name of that place Cherem (Devoted).4And having departed from Mount Hor by the way leading to the Red Sea, they compassed the land of Edom, and the people lost courage by the way.5And the people spoke against God and against Moshe, saying, “Why is this? Have you brought us out of Mitzrayim to kill us in the wilderness? For there is no bread nor water; and our soul loathes this light bread.”6And Yahuah sent among the people fiery serpents, and they bit the people; and much people of the children of Yisra’el died.7And the people came to Moshe and said, “We have sinned, for we have spoken against Yahuah, and against you: pray therefore to Yahuah, and let Him take away the serpent from us.” And Moshe prayed to Yahuah for the people.8And Yahuah said to Moshe, “Make you a fiery serpent, and put it on a signal-staff; and it shall come to pass that whenever a serpent shall bite a man, every one so bitten that looks upon it shall live.”9And Moshe made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a signal-staff: and it came to pass that whenever a serpent bit a man, and he looked on the brazen serpent, he lived.10And the children of Yisra’el departed, and encamped in Ovot.11And having departed from Ovot, they encamped in ‘Iye-ha-‘Avarim, in the wilderness which is opposite Mo’av, towards the east.12And thence they departed, and encamped in the valley of Zered.13And they departed thence and encamped on the other side of Arnon, in the wilderness which extends from the coasts of the Emori; for Arnon is the border of Mo’av, between Mo’av and the Emori.14Therefore it is said in the Book of the Wars of Yahuah, “A war of Yahuah has set on fire Vahev, and the brooks of Arnon.”15“And he has appointed brooks to cause ‘Ar to dwell there; and it lies near to the coasts of Mo’av.”16And thence they came to the well; this is the well of which Yahuah said to Moshe, “Gather the people, and I will give them water to drink.”17Then Yisra’el sang this song at the well, “Spring up, O well; sing you to it!”18“The princes digged the well, the nobles of the people opened it, by the direction of the lawgiver, with their staves.” And from the wilderness they went to Mattanah:19And from Mattanah to Nachali’el: and from Nachali’el to Bamot:20And from Bamot to the valley that is in the country of Mo’av, to the top of Pisgah, which looks towards the wilderness.21And Moshe sent ambassadors to Sichon king of the Emori, with peaceful words, saying,22“We will pass through your land: we will not go through the fields, nor through the vineyards; we will not drink water out of your well: we will go by the king’s highway, until we have passed your boundaries.”23And Sichon did not allow Yisra’el to pass through his borders; and Sichon gathered all his people, and went out to set the battle in array against Yisra’el into the wilderness; and he came to Yahatz, and set the battle in array against Yisra’el.24And Yisra’el struck him with the slaughter of the sword, and they became possessors of his land, from Arnon to Yabbok, as far as the children of ‘Ammon, for Ya‘zer is the border of the children of ‘Ammon.25And Yisra’el took all their cities, and Yisra’el lived in all the cities of the Emori, in Heshbon, and in all cities belonging to it.26For Heshbon is the city of Sichon king of the Emori; and he before fought against the king of Mo’av, and they took all his land, from ‘Aro‘er to Arnon.27Therefore say they who deal in dark speeches, “Come to Heshbon, that the city of Sichon may be built and prepared.”28“For a fire has gone forth from Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sichon, and has consumed as far as Mo’av, and devoured the high places of Arnon.”29“Woe to you, Mo’av; you are lost, you people of Kemosh: their sons are sold for preservation, and their daughters are captives to Sichon king of the Emori.”30“And their seed shall perish from Heshbon to Divon; and their women have yet farther kindled a fire against Mo’av.”31And Yisra’el lived in all the cities of the Emori.32And Moshe sent to spy out Ya‘zer; and they took it, and its villages, and cast out the Emori that lived there.33And having returned, they went up the road that leads to Bashan; and ‘Og the king of Bashan went forth to meet them, and all his people to war at Edre’i.34And Yahuah said to Moshe, “Fear him not; for I have delivered him and all his people, and all his land, into your hands; and you shall do to him as you did to Sichon king of the Emori, who lived in Heshbon.”35And he struck him and his sons, and all his people, until he left none of his to be taken alive; and they inherited his land.

The Counsel of Balak and the Seer Bil‘am
1.0×
1And the children of Yisra’el departed, and encamped on the west of Mo’av by the Yarden towards Yeriho.2And when Balak son of Tzippor saw all that Yisra’el did to the Emori,3Then Mo’av feared the people exceedingly because they were many; and Mo’av was grieved before the face of the children of Yisra’el.4And Mo’av said to the elders of Midyan, “Now shall this assembly lick up all that are round about us, as a bull would lick up the green herbs of the field.” And Balak son of Tzippor was king of Mo’av at that time.5And he sent ambassadors to Bil‘am the son of Be‘or, to Petor, which is on a river of the land of the sons of his people, to call him, saying, “Behold, a people has come out of Mitzrayim, and behold it has covered the face of the earth, and it has encamped close to me.”6“And now come, curse me this people, for it is stronger than we; if we may be able to strike some of them, and I will cast them out of the land: for I know that whoever you do bless, they are blessed, and whoever you do curse, they are cursed.”7And the elders of Mo’av went, and the elders of Midyan, and their divining instruments were in their hands; and they came to Bil‘am, and spoke to him the words of Balak.8And he said to them, “Tarry here the night, and I will answer you the things which Yahuah shall say to me.” And the princes of Mo’av stayed with Bil‘am.9And Elohim came to Bil‘am, and said, “Who are these men with you?”10And Bil‘am said to Elohim, “Balak son of Tzippor, king of Mo’av, sent them to me, saying,”11“Behold, a people has come forth out of Mitzrayim, and has covered the face of the land, and it has encamped near to me; and now come, curse it for me, if indeed I shall be able to strike it, and cast it out of the land.”12And Elohim said to Bil‘am, “You shall not go with them, neither shall you curse the people; for they are blessed.”13And Bil‘am rose up in the morning, and said to the princes of Balak, “Depart quickly to your lord; Yahuah does not permit me to go with you.”14And the princes of Mo’av rose, and came to Balak, and said, “Bil‘am will not come with us.”15And Balak yet again sent more princes and more honorable than they.16And they came to Bil‘am, and they say to him, “Thus says Balak the son of Tzippor: I beseech you, delay not to come to me.”17“For I will greatly honor you, and will do for you whatever you shall say; come then, curse me this people.”18And Bil‘am answered and said to the princes of Balak, “If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I shall not be able to go beyond the word of Yahuah my God, to make it little or great in my mind.”19“And now do you also wait here this night, and I shall know what Yahuah will yet say to me.”20And Elohim came to Bil‘am by night, and said to him, “If these men are come to call you, rise and follow them; nevertheless the word which I shall speak to you, it shall you do.”21And Bil‘am rose up in the morning, and saddled his donkey, and went with the princes of Mo’av.22And Elohim was very angry because he went; and the Angel of Yahuah rose up to withstand him. Now he had mounted his donkey, and his two servants were with him.23And when the donkey saw the Angel of Yahuah standing opposite in the way, and His sword drawn in His hand, then the donkey turned aside out of the way, and went into the field; and Bil‘am struck the donkey with his staff to direct her in the way.24And the Angel of Yahuah stood in the avenues of the vines, a fence being on this side and a fence on that.25And when the donkey saw the Angel of Yahuah, she thrust herself against the wall, and crushed Bil‘am's foot against the wall, and he struck her again.26And the Angel of Yahuah went farther, and came and stood in a narrow place where it was impossible to turn to the right or the left.27And when the donkey saw the Angel of Yahuah, she lay down under Bil‘am; and Bil‘am was angry, and struck the donkey with his staff.28And Yahuah opened the mouth of the donkey, and she says to Bil‘am, “What have I done to you, that you have struck me this third time?”29And Bil‘am said to the donkey, “Because you have mocked me; and if I had had a sword in my hand, I would now have killed you.”30And the donkey says to Bil‘am, “Am not I your donkey on which you have ridden since your youth till this day? Did I ever do thus to you, utterly disregarding you?” And he said, “No.”31And Yahuah opened the eyes of Bil‘am, and he sees the Angel of Yahuah withstanding him in the way, and His sword drawn in His hand, and he stooped down and worshipped on his face.32And the Angel of Yahuah said to him, “Why have you struck your donkey this third time? And, behold, I came out to withstand you, for your way was not seemly before Me; and when the donkey saw Me, she turned away from Me this third time.”33“And if she had not turned out of the way, surely now, I should have slain you, and should have saved her alive.”34And Bil‘am said to the Angel of Yahuah, “I have sinned, for I did not know that You were standing opposite in the way to meet me; and now if it shall not be pleasing to You for me to go on, I will return.”35And the Angel of Yahuah said to Bil‘am, “Go with the men: nevertheless the word which I shall speak to you, that you shall take heed to speak.” And Bil‘am went with the princes of Balak.36And when Balak heard that Bil‘am was come, he went out to meet him, to a city of Mo’av, which is on the borders of Arnon, which is on the extreme part of the borders.37And Balak said to Bil‘am, “Did I not send to you to call you? Why have you not come to me? Shall I not indeed be able to honor you?”38And Bil‘am said to Balak, “Behold, I am now come to you: shall I be able to say anything? The word which Elohim shall put into my mouth, that I shall speak.”39And Bil‘am went with Balak, and they came to the city of streets.40And Balak offered sheep and calves, and sent to Bil‘am and to his princes who were with him.41And it was morning; and Balak took Bil‘am, and brought him up to the pillar of Ba‘al, and showed him thence a part of the people.

The Blessing of the Seer

1And Bil‘am said to Balak, “Build me here seven altars, and prepare me here seven calves, and seven rams.”2And Balak did as Bil‘am told him; and he offered up a calf and a ram on every altar.3And Bil‘am said to Balak, “Stand by your sacrifice, and I will go and see if Yahuah will appear to me and meet me; and the word which He shall show me, I will report to you.” And Bil‘am went to a high place.4And Elohim appeared to Bil‘am; and Bil‘am said to Him, “I have prepared the seven altars, and have offered a calf and a ram on every altar.”5And Yahuah put a word into the mouth of Bil‘am, and said, “Return to Balak, and thus shall you speak.”6And he returned to him, and moreover he stood over his whole burnt offerings, and all the princes of Mo’av with him; and the Spirit of Elohim came upon him.7And he took up his parable, and said, “Balak king of Mo’av sent for me out of Aram, out of the mountains of the east, saying, ‘Come, curse me Ya‘akov, and come, call for a curse for me upon Yisra’el.’”8“How can I curse whom Yahuah curses not? Or how can I denounce whom Elohim denounces not?”9“For from the top of the mountains I shall see him, and from the hills I shall observe him: behold, the people shall dwell alone, and shall not be reckoned among the nations.”10“Who has exactly calculated the seed of Ya‘akov, and who shall number the families of Yisra’el? Let my soul die with the souls of the righteous, and let my end be like his!”11And Balak said to Bil‘am, “What have you done to me? I called you to curse my enemies, and behold, you have greatly blessed them.”12And Bil‘am answered and said to Balak, “Must I not take heed to speak that which Yahuah puts into my mouth?”13And Balak said to him, “Come yet with me to another place where you shall not see the people, but only you shall see a part of them, and shall not see them all; and curse me them from thence.”14And he took him to a high place of the field to the top of the quarried rock, and he built there seven altars, and offered a calf and a ram on every altar.15And Bil‘am said to Balak, “Stand by your sacrifice, and I will go to enquire of Elohim.”16And Yahuah met Bil‘am, and put a word into his mouth, and said, “Return to Balak, and thus shall you speak.”17And he returned to him: and he also was standing by his whole burnt sacrifice, and all the princes of Mo’av with him; and Balak said to him, “What has Yahuah spoken?”18And he took up his parable, and said, “Rise up, Balak, and hear; listen as a witness, you son of Tzippor.”19“Elohim is not as man to waver, nor as the son of man to be threatened; shall He say and not perform? Shall He speak and not keep to His word?”20“Behold, I have received commandment to bless: I will bless, and not turn back.”21“There shall not be trouble in Ya‘akov, neither shall sorrow be seen in Yisra’el: Yahuah his God is with him, and the shout of a King is in him.”22“It was Elohim who brought him out of Mitzrayim; he has as it were the strength of a wild ox.”23“For there is no divination in Ya‘akov, nor enchantment in Yisra’el; in season it shall be told to Ya‘akov and Yisra’el what Elohim shall perform.”24“Behold, the people shall rise up as a lion’s whelp, and shall exalt himself as a lion; he shall not lie down till he have eaten the prey, and he shall drink the blood of the slain.”25And Balak said to Bil‘am, “Neither curse the people at all for me, nor bless them at all.”26And Bil‘am answered and said to Balak, “Spoke I not to you, saying, ‘Whatsoever thing Yahuah shall speak to me, that will I do?’”27And Balak said to Bil‘am, “Come and I will remove you to another place, if it shall please Elohim, and curse me them from thence.”28And Balak took Bil‘am to the top of Pe‘or, which extends to the wilderness.29And Bil‘am said to Balak, “Build me here seven altars, and prepare me here seven calves, and seven rams.”30And Balak did as Bil‘am told him, and offered a calf and a ram on every altar.

The Star of Ya‘akov

1And when Bil‘am saw that it pleased Yahuah to bless Yisra’el, he did not go as at other times to seek for enchantments, but he set his face towards the wilderness.2And Bil‘am lifted up his eyes, and he saw Yisra’el encamped by their tribes; and the Spirit of Elohim came upon him.3And he took up his parable and said, “Bil‘am the son of Be‘or says, the man who sees truly says,”4“He says who hears the oracle of the Mighty One, who saw a vision of the Almighty in a trance; his eyes were opened:”5“How goodly are your dwellings, O Ya‘akov, and your tents, O Yisra’el!”6“As valleys are they spread forth, as gardens by the river’s side, as the trees of lignaloes which Yahuah has planted, and as cedar trees beside the waters.”7“He shall pour the water out of his buckets, and his seed shall be in many waters, and his King shall be higher than Agag, and his kingdom shall be exalted.”8“Elohim brought him forth out of Mitzrayim; he has as it were the strength of a wild ox: he shall eat up the nations his enemies, and shall break their bones, and pierce them through with his arrows.”9“He couched, he lay down as a lion, and as a great lion: who shall stir him up? Blessed is he that blesses you, and cursed is he that curses you.”10And Balak’s anger was kindled against Bil‘am, and he clapped his hands together: and Balak said to Bil‘am, “I called you to curse my enemies, and, behold, you have altogether blessed them these three times.”11“Therefore now flee you to your place: I thought to promote you to great honor; but, lo, Yahuah has kept you back from honor.”12And Bil‘am said to Balak, “Spoke I not also to your messengers whom you sent to me, saying,”13“If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the commandment of Yahuah, to do either good or bad of my own mind; but what Yahuah speaks, that will I speak?”14“And now, behold, I go to my people: come therefore, and I will advertise you what this people shall do to your people in the latter days.”15And he took up his parable and said, “Bil‘am the son of Be‘or says, the man who sees truly says,”16“He says who hears the words of Elohim, and knows the knowledge of the Most High, who saw a vision of the Almighty, falling into a trance, but having his eyes opened:”17“I see him, but not now: I behold him, but not near: there shall come a Star out of Ya‘akov, and a Scepter shall rise out of Yisra’el, and shall strike the corners of Mo’av, and destroy all the children of Sheth.”18“And Edom shall be a possession, Se‘ir also shall be a possession for his enemies; and Yisra’el shall do valiantly.”19“Out of Ya‘akov shall come he that shall have dominion, and shall destroy him that remains of the city.”20And when he looked on ‘Amalek, he took up his parable and said, “‘Amalek was the first of the nations; but his latter end shall be that he perish for ever.”21And he looked on the Kenites, and took up his parable and said, “Strong is your dwelling-place, and you put your nest in a rock.”22“Nevertheless the Kenites shall be wasted, until Ashur shall carry you away captive.”23And he took up his parable and said, “Alas, who shall live when Elohim does this!”24“And ships shall come from the coast of Kittim, and shall afflict Ashur, and shall afflict ‘Eber, and he also shall perish for ever.”25And Bil‘am rose up and went and returned to his place: and Balak also went to his own home.

The Zeal of Pinechas
1.0×
1And Yisra’el sojourned in Shittim, and the people profaned themselves by going a-whoring after the daughters of Mo’av.2And they called them to the sacrifices of their idols; and the people ate of their sacrifices, and worshipped their idols.3And Yisra’el consecrated themselves to Ba‘al-Pe‘or; and Yahuah was very angry with Yisra’el.4And Yahuah said to Moshe, “Take all the Nasirim [princes] of the people, and make them examples of judgment for Yahuah in the face of the sun, and the anger of Yahuah shall be turned away from Yisra’el.”5And Moshe said to the tribes of Yisra’el, “Slay everyone his friend that is consecrated to Ba‘al-Pe‘or.”6And behold, a man of the children of Yisra’el came and brought his brother to a Midyanitish woman before Moshe, and before all the congregation of the children of Yisra’el; and they were weeping at the door of the Ohel Mo’ed (Tabernacle of Witness).7And Pinechas, the son of El‘azar, the son of Aharon the Kohen, saw it, and rose out of the midst of the congregation, and took a javelin in his hand,8And went in after the Yisra’el man into the chamber, and pierced them both through, both the Yisra’el man, and the woman through her womb; and the plague was stayed from the children of Yisra’el.9And those that died in the plague were twenty and four thousand.10And Yahuah spoke to Moshe, saying,11“Pinechas, the son of El‘azar, the son of Aharon the Kohen, has caused My wrath to cease from the children of Yisra’el, when I was exceedingly jealous among them, and I did not consume the children of Yisra’el in My jealousy.”12“Thus, do you say to him, ‘Behold, I give him a covenant of peace:’”13“And he and his zera [seed] after him shall have a perpetual covenant of priesthood בְּרִית כְּהֻנַּת עוֹלָם (Berit Kehunat Olam), because he was zealous for his Elohim, and made atonement for the children of Yisra’el.”14Now the name of the struck Yisra’el man, who was struck with the Midyanitish woman, was Zimri son of Salu, prince of a house of the tribe of Shim‘on.15And the name of the Midyanitish woman who was struck was Kozbi, daughter of Tzur, a prince of the nation of Ommoth: it is a chief house among the people of Midyan.16And Yahuah spoke to Moshe, saying,17“Plague the Midyanites as enemies, and strike them,”18“For they are enemies to you by the treachery wherein they ensnare you through Pe‘or, and through Kozbi their sister, daughter of a prince of Midyan, who was struck in the day of the plague because of Pe‘or.”

1And the daughters of Tzelofchad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gil‘ad, the son of Machir, of the tribe of Menashsheh, of the sons of Yosef, came near; and these were their names: Machlah, and No‘ah, and Hoglah, and Milkah, and Tirtzah.2And they stood before Moshe, and before El‘azar the Kohen, and before the princes, and before all the congregation at the door of the Ohel Mo’ed (Tabernacle of Witness), saying,3“Our father died in the wilderness, and he was not in the midst of the congregation that rebelled against Yahuah in the gathering of Korach; for he died for his own sin, and he had no sons. Let not the name of our father be blotted out of the midst of his people, because he has no son: give us an inheritance in the midst of our father’s brethren.”4And Moshe brought their case before Yahuah.5And Yahuah spoke to Moshe, saying,6“The daughters of Tzelofchad have spoken rightly: you shall surely give them a possession of inheritance in the midst of their father’s brethren, and you shall assign their father’s inheritance to them.”7“And you shall speak to the children of Yisra’el, saying,”8“If a man die, and have no son, you shall assign his inheritance to his daughter.”9“And if he have no daughter, you shall give his inheritance to his brother.”10“And if he have no brethren, you shall give his inheritance to his father’s brother.”11“And if there be no brethren of his father, you shall give the inheritance to his nearest relation of his tribe, to inherit his possessions; and this shall be to the children of Yisra’el an ordinance of judgment, as Yahuah commanded Moshe.”12And Yahuah said to Moshe, “Go up to the mountain that is in the country beyond the Yarden, this mount Nevo, and behold the land Kena‘an, which I give to the sons of Yisra’el for a possession.”13“And you shall see it, and you also shall be added to your people, as Aharon your brother was added to them in mount Hor.”14“Because you transgressed My commandment in the wilderness of Tzin, when the congregation resisted and refused to sanctify Me; you sanctified Me not at the water before them. This is the water of Merivah (Strife) in Kadesh in the wilderness of Tzin.”15And Moshe said to Yahuah,16“Let Yahuah, the Elohim of the spirits and of all flesh, look out for a man over this congregation,”17“Who shall go out before them, and who shall come in before them, and who shall lead them out, and who shall bring them in; so the congregation of Yahuah shall not be as sheep without a shepherd.”18And Yahuah spoke to Moshe, saying, “Take to yourself Yehoshua the son of Nun, a man who has the Spirit in him, and you shall lay your hands upon him.”19“And you shall set him before El‘azar the Kohen, and you shall give him a charge before all the congregation, and you shall give a charge concerning him before them.”20“And you shall put of your glory upon him, that the children of Yisra’el may listen to him.”21“And he shall stand before El‘azar the Kohen, and they shall ask of him before Yahuah the judgment of the Urim: they shall go forth at his word, and at his word they shall come in, he and the children of Yisra’el with one accord, and all the congregation.”22And Moshe did as Yahuah commanded him; and he took Yehoshua, and set him before El‘azar the Kohen, and before all the congregation.23And he laid his hands on him, and appointed him as Yahuah ordered Moshe.

1And Moshe spoke to the children of Yisra’el according to all that Yahuah commanded Moshe.2And Moshe spoke to the heads of the tribes of the children of Yisra’el, saying, “This is the thing which Yahuah has commanded.”3“Whatsoever man shall vow a vow to Yahuah, or swear an oath, or bind himself with an obligation upon his soul, he shall not break his word; all that shall come out of his mouth he shall do.”4“And if a woman shall vow a vow to Yahuah, or bind herself with an obligation in her youth in her father’s house;5And her father should hear her vows and her obligations, wherewith she has bound her soul, and her father should hold his peace at her, then all her vows shall stand, and all the obligations with which she has bound her soul shall remain to her.”6“But if her father strictly forbids her in the day in which he shall hear all her vows and her obligations, which she has contracted upon her soul, they shall not stand; and Yahuah shall hold her guiltless, because her father forbade her.”7“But if she should be indeed married, and her vows be upon her according to the utterance of her lips, the obligations which she has contracted upon her soul;8And her husband should hear, and hold his peace at her in the day in which he should hear, then thus shall all her vows be binding, and her obligations, which she has contracted upon her soul, shall stand.”9“But if her husband should strictly forbid her in the day in which he should hear her, none of her vows or obligations which she has contracted upon her soul shall stand, because her husband has disallowed her, and Yahuah shall hold her guiltless.”10“And the vow of a widow and of her that is divorced, whatever she shall bind upon her soul, shall stand to her.”11“And if her vow be made in the house of her husband, or the obligation upon her soul with an oath,12And her husband should hear, and hold his peace at her, and not disallow her, then all her vows shall stand, and all the obligations which she contracted against her soul, shall stand against her.”13“But if her husband should utterly cancel the vow in the day in which he shall hear it, none of the things which shall proceed out of her lips in her vows, and in the obligations contracted upon her soul, shall stand to her; her husband has cancelled them, and Yahuah shall hold her guiltless.”14“Every vow, and every binding oath to afflict her soul, her husband shall confirm it to her, or her husband shall cancel it.”15“But if he be wholly silent at her from day to day, then shall he bind upon her all her vows; and he shall confirm to her the obligations which she has bound upon herself, because he held his peace at her in the day in which he heard her.”16“And if her husband should in any wise cancel them after the day in which he heard them, then he shall bear his iniquity.”17“These are the ordinances which Yahuah commanded Moshe, between a man and his wife, and between a father and daughter in her youth in the house of her father.”

Vengeance upon Midyan and the Purifying of the Spoil
1.0×
1And Yahuah spoke to Moshe, saying,2“Avenge the wrongs of the children of Yisra’el on the Midyanites, and afterwards you shall be gathered to your people.”3And Moshe spoke to the people, saying, “Arm some of you, and set yourselves in array before Yahuah against Midyan, to inflict vengeance on Midyan for Yahuah .”4“Send a thousand of each tribe from all the tribes of the children of Yisra’el to set themselves in array.”5And they numbered of the thousands of Yisra’el a thousand of each tribe, twelve thousand; these were armed for war.6And Moshe sent them away, a thousand of every tribe with their forces, and Pinechas the son of El‘azar the son of Aharon the Kohen: and the holy instruments, and the signal trumpets were in their hands.7And they set themselves in array against Midyan, as Yahuah commanded Moshe; and they killed every male.8And they killed the kings of Midyan together with their slain subjects; even Evi, and Rekem, and Tzur, and Hur, and Reva, five kings of Midyan; and they killed with the sword Bil‘am the son of Be‘or with their other slain.9And they made a prey of the women of Midyan, and their store, and their cattle, and all their possessions: and they spoiled their forces.10And they burnt with fire all their cities in the places of their habitation, and they burnt their villages with fire.11And they took all their plunder, and all their spoils, both man and beast.12And they brought to Moshe and to El‘azar the Kohen, and to all the children of Yisra’el, the captives, and the spoils, and the plunder, to the camp to Araboth Mo’av, which is at the Yarden by Yeriho.13And Moshe and El‘azar the Kohen and all the rulers of the congregation went forth out of the camp to meet them.14And Moshe was angry with the captains of the host, the heads of thousands and the heads of hundreds who came from the battle-array.15And Moshe said to them, “Why have you saved every female alive?”16“For they were the occasion to the children of Yisra’el by the word of Bil‘am of their revolting and despising the word of Yahuah , because of Pe‘or; and there was a plague in the congregation of Yahuah .”17“Now then, kill every male in all the spoil, and kill every woman who has known the lying with man.”18“And as for all the captivity of women, who have not known the lying with man, save them alive for yourselves.”19“And you shall encamp outside the great camp seven days; everyone who has slain and who touches a dead body shall be purified on the third day, and you and your captivity shall purify yourselves on the seventh day.”20“And you shall purify every garment and every leather utensil, and all furniture of goat skin, and every wooden vessel.”21And El‘azar the Kohen said to the men of the host that came from the battle-array, “This is the ordinance of the law which Yahuah has commanded Moshe.”22“Beside the gold, and the silver, and the brass, and the iron, and lead, and tin,”23“Everything that shall pass through the fire shall so be clean, nevertheless, it shall be purified with the water of sanctification; and whatever will not pass through the fire shall pass through water.”24“And on the seventh day you shall wash your garments, and be clean; and afterwards you shall come into the camp.”25And Yahuah spoke to Moshe, saying,26“Take the sum of the spoils of the captivity both of man and beast, you and El‘azar the Kohen, and the heads of the families of the congregation.”27“And you shall divide the spoils between the warriors that went out to battle, and the whole congregation.”28“And you shall take a tribute for Yahuah from the warriors that went out to battle; one soul out of five hundred, from the men, and from the cattle, even from the oxen, and from the sheep, and from the asses; and you shall take from their half.”29“And you shall give them to El‘azar the Kohen as the firstfruits of Yahuah .”30“And from the half belonging to the children of Yisra’el you shall take one in fifty from the men, and from the oxen, and from the sheep, and from the asses, and from all the cattle; and you shall give them to the Levites that keep the charges in the Ohel Mo’ed of Yahuah .”31And Moshe and El‘azar the Kohen did as Yahuah commanded Moshe.32And that which remained of the spoil which the warriors took, was: of the sheep, six hundred and seventy-five thousand:33And oxen, seventy-two thousand:34And asses, sixty-one thousand:35And persons of women who had not known lying with man, all the souls, thirty-two thousand.36And the half, even the portion of them that went out to war, from the number of the sheep, was three hundred and thirty-seven thousand and five hundred.37And the tribute to Yahuah from the sheep was six hundred and seventy-five.38And the oxen, thirty-six thousand; and the tribute to Yahuah seventy-two.39And asses, thirty thousand and five hundred; and the tribute to Yahuah , sixty-one.40And the persons, sixteen thousand; and the tribute of them to Yahuah , thirty-two souls.41And Moshe gave the tribute to Yahuah , the heave-offering of Elohim , to El‘azar the Kohen, as Yahuah commanded Moshe.42From the half belonging to the children of Yisra’el, whom Moshe separated from the men of war.43And the half taken from the sheep, belonging to the congregation, was three hundred and thirty-seven thousand and five hundred.44And the oxen, thirty-six thousand;45Asses, thirty thousand and five hundred;46And persons, sixteen thousand.47And Moshe took of the half belonging to the children of Yisra’el the fiftieth part, of men and of cattle, and he gave them to the Levites who keep the charges of the Ohel Mo’ed of Yahuah , as Yahuah commanded Moshe.48And all those who were appointed to be officers of thousands of the host, captains of thousands and captains of hundreds, approached Moshe, and said to Moshe,49“Your servants have taken the sum of the men of war with us, and not one is missing.”50“And we have brought our gift to Yahuah , every man who has found an article of gold, whether an armlet, or a chain, or a ring, or a bracelet, or a clasp for hair, to make atonement for us before Yahuah .”51And Moshe and El‘azar the Kohen took the gold from them, even every wrought article.52And all the wrought gold, even the offering that they offered to Yahuah , was sixteen thousand and seven hundred and fifty shekels from the captains of thousands and the captains of hundreds.53For the men of war took plunder every one for himself.54And Moshe and El‘azar the Kohen took the gold from the captains of thousands and captains of hundreds, and brought the vessels into the Ohel Mo’ed, a memorial of the children of Yisra’el before Yahuah ."

1And the children of Re’uven and the children of Gad had a multitude of cattle, very great; and they saw the land of Ya‘zer, and the land of Gil‘ad; and the place was a place for cattle.2And the children of Re’uven and the children of Gad came, and spoke to Moshe, and to El‘azar the Kohen, and to the princes of the congregation, saying,3“Atarot, and Divon, and Ya‘zer, and Nimrah, and Heshbon, and El‘aleh, and Sevam, and Nevo, and Be‘on,4The land which Yahuah has delivered up before the children of Yisra’el, is pasture land, and your servants have cattle.”5And they said, “If we have found grace in your sight, let this land be given to your servants for a possession, and do not cause us to pass over the Yarden.”6And Moshe said to the sons of Gad and the sons of Re’uven, “Shall your brethren go to war, and shall you sit here?”7“And why do you pervert the minds of the children of Yisra’el, that they should not cross over into the land, which Yahuah gives them?”8“Did not your fathers thus, when I sent them from Kadesh-Barne‘a to spy out the land?”9“And they went up to the valley of the cluster, and spied the land, and turned aside the heart of the children of Yisra’el, that they should not go into the land, which Yahuah gave them.”10“And Yahuah was very angry in that day, and swore, saying,”11“‘Surely these men who came up out of Mitzrayim from twenty years old and upward, who know good and evil, shall not see the land which I swore to give to Avraham and Yitzchak and Ya‘akov, for they have not closely followed after Me;’”12“‘Save Kalev the son of Yephunneh, who was set apart, and Yehoshua the son of Nun, for they closely followed after Yahuah .’”13“And Yahuah was very angry with Yisra’el; and for forty years He caused them to wander in the wilderness, until all the generation which did evil in the sight of Yahuah was extinct.”14“Behold, you are risen up in the room of your fathers, a combination of sinful men, to increase yet farther the fierce wrath of Yahuah against Yisra’el.”15“For you will turn away from Him to desert Him yet once more in the wilderness, and you will sin against this whole congregation.”16And they came to him, and said, “We will build here folds for our cattle, and cities for our possessions;”17“And we will arm ourselves and go as an advanced guard before the children of Yisra’el, until we shall have brought them into their place; and our possessions shall remain in walled cities because of the inhabitants of the land.”18“We will not return to our houses till the children of Yisra’el shall have been distributed, each to his own inheritance.”19“And we will not any longer inherit with them from the other side of the Yarden and onwards, because we have our full inheritance on the side beyond the Yarden eastward.”20And Moshe said to them, “If you will do according to these words, if you will arm yourselves before Yahuah for battle,”21“And every one of you will pass over the Yarden fully armed before Yahuah , until His enemy be destroyed from before His face,”22“And the land shall be subdued before Yahuah , then afterwards you shall return, and be guiltless before Yahuah , and as regards Yisra’el; and this land shall be to you for a possession before Yahuah .”23“But if you will not do so, you will sin against Yahuah ; and you shall know your sin, when afflictions shall come upon you.”24“And you shall build for yourselves cities for your store, and folds for your cattle; and you shall do that which proceeds out of your mouth.”25And the sons of Re’uven and the sons of Gad spoke to Moshe, saying, “Your servants will do as our lord commands.”26“Our store, and our wives, and all our cattle shall be in the cities of Gil‘ad.”27“But your servants will go over all armed and set in order before Yahuah to battle, as our lord says.”28And Moshe appointed to them for judges El‘azar the Kohen, and Yehoshua the son of Nun, and the chiefs of the families of the tribes of Yisra’el.29And Moshe said to them, “If the sons of Re’uven and the sons of Gad will pass over the Yarden with you, every one armed for war before Yahuah , and you shall subdue the land before you, then you shall give to them the land of Gil‘ad for a possession.”30“But if they will not pass over armed with you to war before Yahuah , then shall you cause to pass over their possessions and their wives and their cattle before you into the land of Kena‘an, and they shall inherit with you in the land of Kena‘an.”31And the sons of Re’uven and the sons of Gad answered, saying, “Whatsoever Yahuah says to His servants, that will we do.”32“We will go over armed before Yahuah into the land of Kena‘an, and you shall give us our inheritance beyond the Yarden.”33And Moshe gave to them, even to the sons of Gad and the sons of Re’uven, and to the half-tribe of Menashsheh the son of Yosef, the kingdom of Sichon king of the Amorites, and the kingdom of ‘Og king of Bashan, the land and its cities with its coasts, the cities of the land round about.34And the sons of Gad built Divon, and Atarot, and ‘Aro‘er,35And Atroth-Shophan, and Ya‘zer, and they set them up,36And Nimrah, and Bet-Haran, strong cities, and folds for sheep.37And the sons of Re’uven built Heshbon, and El‘aleh, and Kiryatayim,38And Be‘el-Me‘on, surrounded with walls, and Sevam; and they called the names of the cities which they built, after their own names.39And a son of Machir the son of Menashsheh went to Gil‘ad, and took it, and destroyed the Amorite who lived in it.40And Moshe gave Gil‘ad to Machir the son of Menashsheh, and he lived there.41And Ya’ir the son of Menashsheh went and took their villages, and called them the villages of Ya’ir.42And Novach went and took Kenat and her villages, and called them Novach after his name.

1.0×
1And these are the stages of the children of Yisra’el, as they went out from the land of Mitzrayim with their host by the hand of Moshe and Aharon.2And Moshe wrote their removals and their stages, by the word of Yahuah : and these are the stages of their journeying.3They departed from Ra‘amses in the first month, on the fifteenth day of the first month; on the day after the Passover the children of Yisra’el went forth with a high hand before all the Mitzrites.4And the Mitzrites buried those that died of them, even all that Yahuah struck, every firstborn in the land of Mitzrayim; and they departed from the wilderness of Tzin, and encamped in the wilderness of Paran; this is Kadesh.37And they departed from Kadesh, and encamped in mount Hor near the land of Edom.38And Aharon the Kohen went up by the command of Yahuah , and died there in the fortieth year of the departure of the children of Yisra’el from the land of Mitzrayim, in the fifth month, on the first day of the month.39And Aharon was one hundred and twenty-three years old, when he died in mount Hor.40And ‘Arad the Kena‘anite king (he too lived in the land of Kena‘an) having heard when the children of Yisra’el were entering the land—41Then they departed from mount Hor, and encamped in Tzalmonah.42And they departed from Tzalmonah, and encamped in Punon.43And they departed from Punon, and encamped in ‘Ovot.44And they departed from ‘Ovot, and encamped in ‘Iye-Ha‘avarim, on the other side of the Yarden on the borders of Mo’av.45And they departed from ‘Iye-Ha‘avarim, and encamped in Divon-Gad.46And they departed from Divon-Gad, and encamped in ‘Almon-Divlatayim.47And they departed from ‘Almon-Divlatayim, and encamped on the mountains of Avarim, over against Nevo.48And they departed from the mountains of Avarim, and encamped on the west of Mo’av, at the Yarden by Yeriho.49And they encamped by the Yarden between Yeshimot, as far as Avel-Hashittim to the west of Mo’av.50And Yahuah spoke to Moshe at the west of Mo’av by the Yarden at Yeriho, saying,51“Speak to the children of Yisra’el, and you shall say to them, ‘You are to pass over the Yarden into the land of Kena‘an.’”52“And you shall destroy all that dwell in the land before your face, and you shall abolish their high places, and all their molten images you shall destroy, and you shall demolish all their pillars.”53“And you shall destroy all the inhabitants of the land, and you shall dwell in it, for I have given their land to you for an inheritance.”54“And you shall inherit their land according to your tribes; to the greater number you shall give the larger possession, and to the smaller you shall give the less possession; to whatever part a man’s name shall go forth by lot, there shall be his property: you shall inherit according to the tribes of your families.”55“But if you will not destroy the dwellers in the land from before you, then it shall come to pass that whoever of them you shall leave shall be thorns in your eyes, and darts in your sides, and they shall be enemies to you on the land on which you shall dwell;”56“And it shall come to pass that as I had determined to do to them, so I will do to you.”

The Boundaries of the Inheritance
1.0×
1And Yahuah spoke to Moshe, saying,2“Charge the children of Yisra’el, and you shall say to them, ‘You are entering into the land of Kena‘an: it shall be to you for an inheritance, the land of Kena‘an with its boundaries.’”3“And your southern side shall be from the wilderness of Tzin to the border of Edom, and your border southward shall extend on the side of the Salt Sea eastward.”4“And your border shall go round you from the south to the ascent of Akrabbim, and shall proceed by Tzin, and the going forth of it shall be southward to Kadesh-Barne‘a, and it shall go forth to Chatzar-Addar, and shall proceed by ‘Atzmon.”5“And the border shall compass from ‘Atzmon to the River of Mitzrayim, and the sea shall be the termination.”6“And you shall have your border on the west, the Great Sea shall be the boundary: this shall be to you the border on the west.”7“And this shall be your northern border; from the Great Sea you shall measure to yourselves, by the side of the mountain.”8“And you shall measure to yourselves the mountain from Mount Hor at the entering in to Chamath, and the termination of it shall be the coasts of Tzedad.”9“And the border shall go out to Ziphron, and its termination shall be at Chatzar-‘Eynan; this shall be your border from the north.”10“And you shall measure to yourselves the eastern border from Chatzar-‘Eynan to Shepham.”11“And the border shall go down from Shepham to Rivlah on the east side of ‘Ayin; and the border shall go down from Rivlah behind the Sea of Kinneret eastward.”12“And the border shall go down to the Yarden, and the termination shall be the Salt Sea; this shall be your land and its borders round about.”13And Moshe charged the children of Yisra’el, saying, “This is the land which you shall inherit by lot, even as Yahuah commanded us to give it to the nine tribes and the half-tribe of Menashsheh.”14“For the tribe of the children of Re’uven, and the tribe of the children of Gad have received their inheritance according to their families; and the half-tribe of Menashsheh have received their inheritances.”15“Two tribes and half a tribe have received their inheritance beyond the Yarden by Yeriho from the south eastwards.”16And Yahuah spoke to Moshe, saying,17“These are the names of the men who shall divide the land to you for an inheritance; El‘azar the Kohen and Yehoshua the son of Nun.”18“And you shall take one ruler from each tribe to divide the land to you by lot.”19“And these are the names of the men: of the tribe of Yehudah, Kalev the son of Yephunneh.”20“Of the tribe of Shim‘on, Shemu’el the son of ‘Ammihud.”21“Of the tribe of Binyamin, Elidad the son of Kislon.”22“Of the tribe of Dan, the prince was Bukki the son of Yogli.”23“Of the sons of Yosef, of the tribe of the sons of Menashsheh, the prince was Hanniyel the son of Ephod.”24“Of the tribe of the sons of Ephrayim, the prince was Kemuel the son of Shiftan.”25“Of the tribe of Zevulun, the prince was Elitzaphan the son of Parnak.”26“Of the tribe of the sons of Yissakhar, the prince was Paltiyel the son of ‘Azzan.”27“Of the tribe of the children of Asher, the prince was Achihud the son of Shelomi.”28“Of the tribe of Naphtali, the prince was Pedahel the son of ‘Ammihud.”29“These did Yahuah command to distribute the inheritances to the children of Yisra’el in the land of Kena‘an.”

Cities for the Levites and Cities of Refuge
1.0×
1And Yahuah spoke to Moshe to the west of Mo’av by the Yarden near Yeriho (Jericho), saying,2“Give orders to the children of Yisra’el, and they shall give to the Levites cities to dwell in from the lot of their possession, and they shall give to the Levites the suburbs of the cities round about them.”3“And the cities shall be for them to dwell in, and their enclosures shall be for their cattle and all their beasts.”4“And the suburbs of the cities which you shall give to the Levites shall be from the wall of the city and outwards two thousand cubits round about.”5“And you shall measure outside the city on the east side two thousand cubits, and on the south side two thousand cubits, and on the west side two thousand cubits, and on the north side two thousand cubits; and your city shall be in the midst of this, and the suburbs of the cities as described.”6“And you shall give the cities to the Levites: the six cities of refuge which you shall give for the slayer to flee there, and in addition to these, forty-two cities.”7“You shall give to the Levites in all forty-eight cities, them and their suburbs.”8“And as for the cities which you shall give out of the possession of the children of Yisra’el, from those that have much you shall give much, and from those that have less you shall give less: they shall give of their cities to the Levites each one according to his inheritance which they shall inherit.”9And Yahuah spoke to Moshe, saying,10“Speak to the children of Yisra’el, and you shall say to them, ‘You are to cross over the Yarden into the land of Kena‘an.’”11“And you shall appoint to yourselves cities: they shall be to you cities of refuge for the slayer to flee to, every one who has killed another unintentionally.”12“And the cities shall be to you places of refuge from the avenger of blood, and the slayer shall not die until he stands before the congregation for judgment.”13“And the cities which you shall assign, even the six cities, shall be places of refuge for you.”14“You shall assign three cities on the other side of the Yarden, and you shall assign three cities in the land of Kena‘an.”15“It shall be a place of refuge for the children of Yisra’el, and for the stranger, and for him that sojourns amongst you; these cities shall be for a place of refuge, for everyone to flee there who has killed a man unintentionally.”16“And if he should strike him with an iron instrument, and the man should die, he is a murderer; let the murderer by all means be put to death.”17“And if he should strike him with a stone thrown from his hand, whereby a man may die, and he thus die, he is a murderer; let the murderer by all means be put to death.”18“And if he should strike him with an instrument of wood from his hand, whereby he may die, and he thus die, he is a murderer; let the murderer by all means be put to death.”19“The avenger of blood himself shall kill the murderer: whenever he shall meet him he shall kill him.”20“And if he should thrust him through enmity, or cast anything upon him from an ambuscade, and the man should die,”21“Or if he have struck him with his hand through anger, and the man should die, let the man that struck him be put to death by all means, he is a murderer: let the murderer by all means be put to death: the avenger of blood shall kill the murderer when he meets him.”22“But if he should thrust him suddenly, not through enmity, or cast anything upon him, not from an ambuscade,”23“Or strike him with any stone, whereby a man may die, unawares, and it should fall upon him, and he should die, but he was not his enemy, nor sought to hurt him;”24“Then the assembly shall judge between the smiter and the avenger of blood, according to these judgments.”25“And the congregation shall rescue the slayer from the avenger of blood, and the congregation shall restore him to his city of refuge, whither he fled for refuge; and he shall dwell there till the death of the High Priest, whom they anointed with the holy oil.”26“But if the slayer should in any wise go out beyond the bounds of the city whither he fled for refuge,”27“And the avenger of blood should find him without the bounds of the city of his refuge, and the avenger of blood should kill the slayer, he is not guilty.”28“For he ought to have remained in the city of refuge till the High Priest died; and after the death of the High Priest the slayer shall return to the land of his possession.”29“And these things shall be to you for an ordinance of judgment throughout your generations in all your dwellings.”30“Whoever kills a man, you shall kill the murderer on the testimony of witnesses; and one witness shall not testify against a soul that he should die.”31“And you shall not accept ransoms for life from a murderer who is worthy of death, for he shall be surely put to death.”32“You shall not accept a ransom to excuse his fleeing to the city of refuge, so that he should again dwell in the land, until the death of the High Priest.”33“So shall you not pollute with murder the land in which you dwell; for this blood pollutes the land, and the land shall not be purged from the blood shed upon it, but by the blood of him that shed it.”34“And you shall not defile the land whereon you dwell, on which I dwell in the midst of you; for I am Yahuah dwelling in the midst of the children of Yisra’el.”

The Inheritance of the Daughters of Tzelofchad
1.0×
1And the heads of the tribe of the sons of Gil‘ad the son of Machir the son of Menashsheh, of the tribe of the sons of Yosef, drew near, and spoke before Moshe, and before El‘azar the Kohen, and before the heads of the houses of the families of the children of Yisra’el:2And they said, “Yahuah commanded our lord to render the land of inheritance by lot to the children of Yisra’el; and Yahuah appointed our lord to give the inheritance of Tzelofchad our brother to his daughters.”3“And they will become wives in one of the tribes of the children of Yisra’el; so, their inheritance shall be taken away from the possession of our fathers, and shall be added to the inheritance of the tribe into which the women shall marry, and shall be taken away from the portion of our inheritance.”4“And if there shall be a release of the children of Yisra’el, then shall their inheritance be added to the inheritance of the tribe into which the women marry, and their inheritance shall be taken away from the inheritance of our family’s tribe.”5And Moshe charged the children of Yisra’el by the commandment of Yahuah, saying, “Thus says the tribe of the sons of Yosef.”6“This is the thing which Yahuah has appointed for the daughters of Tzelofchad, saying, ‘Let them marry where they please, only let them marry men of their father’s tribe.’”7“So, shall not the inheritance of the children of Yisra’el go about from tribe to tribe, for the children of Yisra’el shall steadfastly continue each in the inheritance of his family’s tribe.”8“And whatever daughter is heiress to a property of the tribes of the children of Yisra’el, such women shall be married each to one of her father’s tribe, that the sons of Yisra’el may each inherit the property of his father’s tribe.”9“And the inheritance shall not go about from one tribe to another, but the children of Yisra’el shall steadfastly continue each in his own inheritance.”10As Yahuah commanded Moshe, so did they to the daughters of Tzelofchad.11So Tirtzah, and ‘Eglah, and Milkah, and No‘ah, and Machlah, the daughters of Tzelofchad, married their cousins;12They were married to men of the tribe of Menashsheh of the sons of Yosef; and their inheritance was attached to the tribe of their father’s family.13These are the commandments, and the ordinances, and the judgments, which Yahuah commanded by the hand of Moshe, at the west of Mo’av, at the Yarden by Yeriho (Jericho).
