Testament of Avraham

Introduction

TZAVA'AT AVRAHAM

(The Testament of Avraham — Abraham the Patriarch)

How to read this. In keeping with Shemot (Exodus) 6:3 — “I appeared to Avraham, to Yitzchak, and to Ya’akov as El Shaddai, but by My name YHWH I was not known to them” — the four-letter Name is not used in this patriarchal account. The Deity is set as El and Elohim (God), El Shaddai (God Almighty), and Elyon (the Most High). Where “lord” is a human courtesy — “my lord Avraham” — it is left as it stands. Each Hebrew term, on its first appearance, is shown in bold with its pointed Hebrew and an English gloss in parentheses, and thereafter in bold only.

Introduction to Tzava'at Avraham (The Testament of Abraham)

Narrative Framework and Textual Scope

This primary apocalyptic text preserves the complete architectural framework and instructional legacy of Tzava'at Avraham (The Testament of Abraham), an ancient pseudepigraphal work capturing the final days and heavenly ascent of the first Hebrew patriarch. Surviving through important early Christian recensions, the document chronicles the closing chapter of Avraham's 175-year life at the oak of Mamre. Rather than a conventional legal will, this testament unfolds as a dramatic cosmic narrative, tracking the patriarch's profound reluctance to face physical mortality and his subsequent journey through the celestial realms. In alignment with the structural directives of The Ivri Heritage Bible series and the explicit boundary of Shemot (Exodus) 6:3, the four-letter Tetragrammaton is entirely absent from this patriarchal account. Because the sacred name was not yet revealed to the fathers, the text addresses the Deity exclusively through the titles by which He was historically known: El (God), Elohim (God), El Shaddai (God Almighty), and Elyon (the Most High). By restoring exact bilingual terminology—such as Nefesh for the soul, Shamayim for the heavens, Eretz for the earth, and Mishpat for judgment—this edition provides researchers with an unredacted baseline for studying early Second-Temple angelology, eschatology, and Abrahamic hospitality lines.

Key Thematic Movements

The visionary progression and narrative developments of Tzava'at Avraham unfold across five major thematic acts:

1. The Hospitallers' Crisis and the Hesitant Archangel (Chapters 1–5)

The text opens by celebrating Avraham's radical lifelong commitment to Tzedakah (righteousness) and hospitality, noting how he pitched his tent at the crossroads of Mamre to entertain rich and poor alike. When the inexorable lot of death approaches, Elohim dispatches the archangel Mikha'el (Michael), the heavenly chief captain, to command Avraham to set his earthly affairs in order. Mikha'el encounters the patriarch plowing alongside his servants, and Avraham—mistaking the incorporeal archangel for a comely earthly warrior—welcomes him with deep courtesy. As they journey toward the estate, a cypress tree miraculously cries out with a human voice, proclaiming the thrice-holy praise of Elohim. In a poignant display of devotion, Avraham washes the archangel's feet; when the patriarch weeps over his guest's long journey, Mikha'el's falling tears instantly crystallize into precious stones within the water basin. Overwhelmed by Avraham's absolute righteousness, Mikha'el temporarily ascends to Shamayim to plead with El, declaring that he lacks the emotional strength to remind such a flawless, hospitable man of his impending death.

2. The Prophetic Dream of Yitzchak and the Refusal of Death (Chapters 6–8)

To resolve the archangel's dilemma, El casts a prophetic dream into the heart of Avraham's son, Yitzchak (Isaac). Awakening in terror during the third hour of the Lailah (night), Yitzchak runs to his father, weeping that he is about to be made an orphan. Sarah joins them, and recognizing the otherworldly eloquence of their guest, identifies Mikha'el as one of the three celestial visitors who had previously visited their tent to promise Yitzchak's birth. Yitzchak relates his vision: the sun and moon were stripped from his head by a brilliant man of light and carried into heaven. Mikha'el interprets the cosmic imagery: the sun represents Avraham, the moon represents Sarah, and the man of light is the messenger sent to harvest the patriarch's righteous Nefesh. Faced with his formal summons, Avraham drops his courtesy and explicitly rebels, flatly telling the archangel, "I will not go with you." Mikha'el returns to the throne room of Elyon, prompting El Shaddai to deliver a sweeping sovereign reminder to the patriarch regarding the absolute universality of death from Adam and Chavah (Eve) downward.

3. The Chariot Vision and Judicial Intercession (Chapters 9–10)

Yielding slightly to the divine decree, Avraham requests a singular concession before his departure: he desires to behold the entire inhabited earth and all of creation while still clothed in his physical body. El grants the request, commanding Mikha'el to place the patriarch upon a spectacular chariot of the Keruvim (cherubim) enveloped in a cloud of light, escorted by sixty angels. Sailing through the air, Avraham gazes down upon human society, observing the full spectrum of good and evil deeds. However, the patriarch’s unblemished righteousness lacks human mercy; when he spots thieves wielding swords, he commands the earth to unleash wild beasts to devour them; when he witnesses fornication, he commands the ground to swallow the lovers; and when he sees burglars, he calls down fire from heaven to consume them. Terrified that Avraham's absolute intolerance for sin will utterly destroy human creation, a voice from Shamayim orders Mikha'el to halt the chariot immediately, observing that because Avraham has never sinned, he possesses no pity for sinners.

4. The Three Tribunals at the Gates of Shamayim (Chapters 11–14)

To teach the patriarch divine compassion, Mikha'el diverts the chariot to the first gate of heaven, exposing Avraham to the grand mechanics of cosmic judgment. Avraham beholds the first-created man, Adam, seated upon a gilded throne between a narrow gate leading to Pardes (paradise) and a broad gate leading to destruction. Adam throws himself to the ground, tearing his beard in weeping as thousands of souls are driven through the broad gate by pitiless, fiery angels, while only one in seven thousand enters the gate of life. Passing inside, they witness a terrible crystal throne where Hevel (Abel), the slain son of Adam, sits as the first line of global judgment. Before him lies a massive six-cubit-thick book of records, flanked by recording angels who log every righteous deed (Tzedakah) and every sin, while the archangels Dokiel and Puruel weigh and test each soul using balances and all-consuming fire. Yahuah's multi-layered judicial network is mapped out explicitly: • The First Court: Souls are evaluated by a peer born of man (Hevel). • The Second Court: At the second coming, souls are judged by the twelve tribes of Israel. • The Third Court: The final, immutable sentence is delivered by Elohim, the Judge of all. When a soul is brought forward whose sins and righteous deeds are perfectly balanced, Avraham experiences a radical transformation of heart; he joins Mikha'el in a deep intercessory prayer, successfully tipping the scales to rescue the soul into Pardes. Realizing his previous errors, Avraham repents with bitter tears for the earthly sinners he had casually destroyed with his curses, and El mercifully restores those lives on earth.

5. The Shameless Countenance of Death and the Final Deception (Chapters 15–20) Returned to his chamber, Avraham's stubbornness returns, and he repeats his refusal to follow Mikha'el. Compelled to take final measures, Elyon summons Death, described as "the shameless countenance and the pitiless look," instructing him to harvest the patriarch without terrifying him. Death disguises his fierce corruption, putting on a robe of immense solar brightness and assuming the form of a beautiful archangel. Avraham confronts the visitor under the trees of Mamre; when Death reveals his true identity, the patriarch demands to see his unmitigated, natural fierceness. Death obliges, transforming into a grotesque tyrant boasting seven fiery serpent heads, fourteen horrific faces (representing dark precipices, vipers, wild beasts, and lightning), and a cup mingled with poisons—an exposure so catastrophic that seven thousand household servants drop dead instantly. Avraham falls into a deep physical stupor (indifference of death). After praying alongside Death to resurrect the fallen servants, the faint patriarch lies down upon his couch, still refusing to move until Mikha'el arrives. Ultimately, Death employs a clever ruse: he coaxes the weakened patriarch to take his right hand under the pretense of restoring his strength. The moment their hands lock, Avraham's Nefesh adheres to the hand of Death, and his soul is extracted, white as snow. Mikha'el and a vast host of angels wrap the precious soul in a divinely woven linen cloth, perfuming the physical remains for burial at Mamre, while carrying Avraham’s soul into the pristine tabernacles of Pardes, directly into the bosom of Yitzchak and Ya'akov.

Comparative Manuscript Value

For textual researchers analyzing pseudepigraphal transmission history and the evolution of early Abrahamic traditions, Tzava'at Avraham serves as a critical text-critical milestone. By maintaining a rigorous structural layout that respects ancient naming boundaries (omitting the Tetragrammaton), this edition allows scholars to inspect the theological ideas of the Hellenistic era without medieval distortions. The work's unique focus on a multi-tiered cosmic court system, its portrait of Abel as a messianic judge, and its raw, anthropomorphic depiction of Death provide irreplaceable data for investigating the cross-pollination of early Hebraic Jewish midrash and early Christian apocalyptic thought.

1Go to my friend Avraham yet once again and speak to him thus thus says El your Elohim he that brought you into the land of promise that blessed you above the sand of the sea. 2And above the stars of Shamayim that opened the womb of barrenness of Sarah and granted you Yitzchak as the fruit of the womb in old age. 3Verily I say unto you that the blessing I will bless you and multiplying I will multiply your seed. 4And I will give you all that you shall ask from me for I am El your Elohim. 5And besides me there is no other tell me why you have rebelled against me and why there is grief in you. 6And why you rebelled against my archangel Mikha'el do you not know that all who have. 7Come from Adam (אָדָם, Adam) and Chavah (חַוָּה, Eve) have died and that none of the prophets has escaped death none of those that rule as kings is immortal none of your forefathers has escaped the mystery of death they have all died they have all departed into She'ol (שְׁאוֹל, Sheol, the grave; Hades) they are all gathered by the sickle of death. 8But upon you I have not sent death I have not suffered any deadly disease to. 9Come upon you I have not permitted the sickle of death to meet you I have not allowed the nets of She'ol to unfold you I have never wished you to meet with any evil. 10But for good comfort I have sent my chief captain Mikha'el to you that you may know your departure from the world. 11And set your house in order and all that belongs to you and bless Yitzchak your beloved son. 12And now know that I have done this not wishing to grieve you wherefore then have you said to my chief captain I will not. 13Go with you wherefore have you spoken thus do you not know that if I give leave to death. 14And he comes upon you then I should see whether you would come or not.

1And the chief captain receiving the exhortations of El went down to Avraham and seeing him the righteous one fell upon his face to the ground as one dead. 2And the chief captain told him all that he had heard from Elyon (עֶלְיוֹן, the Most High) then the Kadosh. 3And just Avraham rising with many tears fell at his feet of incorporeal and besodum saying I beseech you chief captain of the hosts above since you have Kadosh dane to. 4Come yourself to me as sinner and in all things your unworthy servant I beseech you even. 5Now o chief captain to carry my word yet again to Elyon and you shall say to him. 6Thus says Avraham your servant El El in every work and word which I have asked of you you have heard me. 7And has fulfilled all my counsel now El I resist not your power for I too know that I am not immortal. 8But mortal since therefore to your command all things yield and fear and tremble at the face of your power I also fear. 9But I ask one request of you and now El and master hear my prayer for while still in this body I desire to see all the inhabited Eretz. 10And all the creations which you established by one word and when I see these then if I shall depart from life I shall be without sorrow. 11So the chief captain went back again and stood before Elohim and told him all saying. 12Thus says your friend Avraham I desired to behold all the Eretz in my lifetime before I died. 13And Elyon hearing this again commanded the chief captain Mikha'el and said to him take a cloud of light. 14And the Mal'achim (מַלְאָכִים, angels) that have power over the chariots and go down take the righteous Avraham upon a chariot of the Keruvim (כְּרוּבִים, cherubim). 15And exalt him into the air of Shamayim that he may behold all the Eretz and the archangel Mikha'el went down. 16And took Avraham upon a chariot of the Keruvim and exalted him into the air of Shamayim. 17And led him upon the cloud together with sixty Mal'achim.

1And Avraham ascended upon the chariot over all the Eretz and Avraham saw the world as it was in that Yom some plowing others driving wagons in one place men hurting flocks. 2And in another watching them by Lailah and dancing and playing and harping in another place men striving. 3And contending at law elsewhere men weeping and having the dead in remembrance he so also the newly wedded received with honor. 4And in a word he saw all things that are done in the world both good. 5And bad Avraham therefore passing over them saw a men bearing swords wielding in their hands sharpened swords. 6And Avraham asked the chief captain who are these the chief captains said these are thieves who intend to commit murder. 7And to steal and burn and destroy Avraham said El El hear my voice and command that wild beasts may. 8Come out of the wood and devour them and even as he spoke there came wild beats out of the wood. 9And devoured them and he saw in another place a man with a woman committing fornication with each other. 10And said El El command that the Eretz may open and swallow them and straightway the Eretz was cleft. 11And swallowed them and he saw in another place men digging through a house and carrying away other men's possessions. 12And he said El El command that fire may come down from Shamayim and consume them. 13And even as he spoke fire came down from Shamayim and consumed them and straightway there came a voice from Shamayim to the chief captain saying. 14Thus oh chief captain Mikha'el command the chariot to stop and turn Avraham away that he may not see all the Eretz. 15For if he behold all that live in wickedness he will destroy all creation for behold Avraham has not sinned. 16And has no pity on sinners but I have made the world and desire not to destroy any one of them. 17But wait for the death of the sinner till he be converted and live but take Avraham up to the first gate of Shamayim that he may see there the judgments. 18And recompenses and repent of the Nefashot (נְפָשׁוֹת, souls) of the sinners that he has destroyed so Mikha'el turned the chariot.

1And brought Avraham to the east to the first gate of Shamayim and Avraham saw two ways the one narrow. 2And contracted the other broad and spacious and there he saw two gates the one brought on the broadway. 3And the other narrow on the narrow way and outside the two gates there he saw a man sitting upon a gilded throne. 4And the appearance of that man was terrible as of El and they saw many Nefashot driven by Mal'achim. 5And led in through the broad gate and other Nefashot few in number that were taken by the Mal'achim through the narrow gate. 6And when the wonderful one who sat upon the golden throne saw few entering through the narrow gate. 7And many entering through the broad one straightway that wonderful one tore the hairs of his head. 8And the sides of his beard and threw himself on the ground from his throne weeping. 9And lamenting but when he saw many Nefashot entering through the narrow gate then he arose from the ground. 10And sat upon his throne in great joy rejoicing and exalting and Avraham asked the chief captain my lord chief captain who is this most marvelous man adorned with such Kavod. 11And sometimes he weeps and laments and sometimes he rejoices and exults the incorporeal once said this is the first created Adam who is in such Kavod. 12And he looks upon the world because all are born from him and when he sees many Nefashot going through the narrow gate. 13Then he arises and sits upon his throne rejoicing and exalting in joy because the narrow gate is that of a just that leads life. 14And they that enter through it go into Pardes (פַּרְדֵּס, paradise) for this then the first created Adam rejoices because he sees the Nefashot being saved. 15But when he sees many Nefashot entering through the broad gate then he pulls out the hairs of his head. 16And casts himself on the ground weeping and lamenting bitterly for the broad gate is that of sinners which leads to destruction. 17And eternal punishment and for this the first formed atom falls from his throne weeping and lamenting. 18For the destruction of sinners for they are many that are lost and they are few that are saved. 19For in 7 000 there is scarcely found one Nefesh saved being righteous and undefiled while he was yet saying these things to me the whole two Mal'achim fiery. 20And aspect and pitiless in mind and severe in look and they drove on thousands of Nefashot pitilessly lashing them with fiery thongs the Mal'ach laid hold of one Nefesh. 21And they drove all the Nefashot in at the broad gate to destruction so we also went along with the Mal'achim.

1And came within that broad gate and between the two gates stood a throne terrible of aspect of terrible crystal gleaming as fire. 2And upon it sat a wanderous man bright as the sun light to the son of Elohim before him stood a table like crystal all of gold. 3And fine linen and upon the table there was lying a book the thickness of its six cubits. 4And the breadth of it ten cubits and on the right and left of it stood two Mal'achim holding paper. 5And ink and pen before the table sat a Mal'ach of light holding in his hand of balance. 6And on his left side a Mal'ach all fiery pitiless and severe holding in his hand a Shofar (שׁוֹפָר, ram’s-horn trumpet) having within it all consuming fire with which to try the sinners the wondrous man who sat upon the throne himself judged. 7And sentenced the Nefashot and the two Mal'achim on the right and on the left wrote down the one on the right the Tzedakah. 8And the one on the left the wickedness the one before the table who held the balance weighed the Nefashot. 9And the fiery Mal'ach who held the fire tried the Nefashot and Avraham asked the chief captain Mikha'el what is this that we. 10Behold and the chief captain said these things that you see Kadosh Avraham are the Mishpat (מִשְׁפָּט, judgment). 11And recompense and behold the Mal'ach holding the Nefesh in his hand and he brought it before the judge. 12And the judge said to one of the Mal'achim that served him open this book and find me the sins of this Nefesh. 13And opening the book he found its sins and its Tzedakah equally balanced and he neither gave it to the tormentors nor to those that were saved. 14But said it in the midst and Avraham said my lord chief captain who is this most wondrous judge. 15And who are the Mal'achim that write down and who is the Mal'ach like the son holding the balance. 16And who is the fiery Mal'ach holding the fire the chief captain said do you see most Kadosh Avraham the terrible man sitting upon the throne.

Testament of AvrahamChapter 13

1This is the son of the first created Adam who is called Hevel (הֶבֶל, Abel) whom the wicked Kayin (קַיִן, Cain) killed. 2And he sits thus to judge all creation and examines righteous men and sinners for Elohim has said I shall not judge you. 3But every man born of man shall be judged therefore he has given to him Mishpat to judge the world until his great. 4And glorious coming and then o righteous Avraham is the perfect Mishpat and recompense eternal and unchangeable which no one can alter. 5For every man has come from the first created and therefore they are first judged here by his son. 6And at the second coming they shall be judged by the twelve tribes of israel every breath. 7And every creature but the third time they shall be judged by Elohim of all and. 8Then indeed the end of that Mishpat is near and the sentence terrible and there is none to deliver. 9And now by three tribunals the Mishpat of the world and the recompense is made and. 10For this reason the matter is not finally confirmed by one or two witnesses but by three witnesses shall everything be established the two Mal'achim on the right hand. 11And on the left these are they that write down the sins and the Tzedakah the one on the right hand writes down the Tzedakah. 12And the one on the left the sins the Mal'ach like the son holding the balance in his hand is the archangel Dokiel (דּוֹקִיאֵל, Dokiel, the recording archangel) the just waiter. 13And he weighs the Tzedakot (צְדָקוֹת, righteous deeds) and sins with the Tzedakah of Elohim the fiery and pitiless Mal'ach holding the fire in his hand is the archangel Puruel (פּוּרוּאֵל, Puruel, the fiery archangel who tries works by fire) who has power over fire. 14And tries the works of men through fire and if the fire consumed the work of any man the Mal'ach of Mishpat immediately seizes him. 15And carries him away to the place of sinners a most bitter place of punishment but if the fire approves the work of anyone. 16And does not cease upon it that man is justified and the Mal'ach of the Tzedakah takes him. 17And carries him up to be saved in the lot of the just and thus most righteous Avraham all things in all men are tried by fire. 18And the balance and Avraham said to the chief captain my lord the chief captain the Nefesh which the Mal'ach held in his hand why was it a judge to be said in the midst the chief captain said listen righteous Avraham because the judge found its sins. 19And its Tzedakah is equal he neither committed it to Mishpat nor to be saved until the judge of all shall. 20Come Avraham said to the chief captain and what yet is wanting for the Nefesh to be saved the chief captain said if it obtains one Tzedakah above its sins it enters into Yeshu'ah (יְשׁוּעָה, salvation) Avraham said to the chief captain. 21Come hither chief captain Mikha'el.

1Let us make prayer for this Nefesh and see whether Elohim will hear us the chief captain said Amen be it. 2So and they made prayer and entreaty for the Nefesh and Elohim heard them and when they rose up from their prayer they did not see the Nefesh standing there. 3And Avraham said to the Mal'ach where is the Nefesh that you held in the midst. 4And the Mal'ach answered it has been saved by your righteous prayer and behold a Mal'ach of the light has taken it. 5And carried it up into Pardes Avraham said I glorify the name of Elohim Elyon and his immeasurable Chesed (חֶסֶד, lovingkindness, mercy). 6And Avraham said to the chief captain I beseech you archangel hearken to my prayer and let us yet call upon El. 7And supplicate his compassion and entreat his Chesed for the Nefashot of the sinners who my formerly in my anger cursed. 8And destroyed whom the Eretz devoured and the wild beasts tore in pieces and the fire consumed through my words. 9Now I know that I have sinned before El our Elohim come then o Mikha'el chief captain of the hosts above. 10Come let us call upon Elohim with tears that he may forgive me my sin and grant them to me. 11And the chief captain heard him and they made entreaty before El and when they had called upon him. 12For a long space there came a voice from Shamayim saying Avraham Avraham I have hearkened to your voice. 13And your prayer and forgive you your sin and those whom you think that I destroyed I have called up. 14And brought them into life by my exceeding kindness because for a season I have requited them in Mishpat. 15And those whom I destroy living upon Eretz I will not requite in death and the voice of El said also to the chief captain Mikha'el Mikha'el my servant turn back Avraham to his house. 16For behold his end has come near and the measure of his life is fulfilled that he may set all things in order. 17And then take him and bring him to me so the chief captain turning the chariot in the cloud.

1Brought Avraham to his house and going into his chamber he sat upon his couch and Sarah his wife came. 2And embraced the feet of the incorporeal and spoke humbly saying I give you thanks my lord that you have brought my lord Avraham. 3For behold we thought he had been taken up from us and his son Yitzchak also came. 4And fell upon his neck and in the same way all his men slaves and women slaves surrounded Avraham. 5And embraced him glorifying Elohim and the incorporeal one said to them hearken righteous Avraham behold your wife Sarah. 6Behold also your beloved son Yitzchak behold also all your men servants and maidservants round about you make disposition of all that you have. 7For the Yom has come near in which you shall depart from the body and go to El once. 8For all Avraham said has El said it or do you say this of yourself the chief captain answered hearken righteous Avraham El is commanded. 9And I tell it you Avraham said I will not go with you the chief captain hearing these words straightway went forth from the presence of Avraham. 10And went up into the Shamayim and stood before Elohim Elyon and said El Shaddai behold I have hearkened to your friend Avraham. 11And all he has said to you and have fulfilled his requests I have shown to him your power. 12And all the Eretz and sea that is under Shamayim I have shown to him Mishpat. 13And recompense by means of cloud and chariots and again he says I will not go with you. 14And Elyon said to the Mal'ach does my friend Avraham say this again I will not. 15Go with you the archangel said El Shaddai he says thus and I refrain from laying hands on him because from the beginning he is your friend. 16And has done all things pleasing in your sight there is no man like him on Eretz not even Iyov (אִיּוֹב, Job) the wanderous man. 17And therefore I refrain from laying hands on him command therefore immortal king what shall be done. 18Then Elyon said.
